  1. Looks like a very faint crown on the right (as your photo is oriented) and more distinct crown on the left.
The book says the first crown on the wrist of the stock is the initial testing and sighting in. Subsequent crowns indicate re-inspection. Certain workshops had letters associated with additional crown stamps which "usually means the rifle was rebarrelled at a particular arsenal or refurbishing station".
Also, "the first time a rifle went to an armourer for inspection, a punch mark was often placed on the trigger guard. A second similar mark would often be placed if a minor repair was made." I haven't been able to find punch marks on the trigger guards of the 2 rifles I have.

Interesting! I don’t see punch markings on the trigger guard at all. And to me the wear/bluing loss on the barrel looks consistent with the receiver so I lean toward it being the original barrel but certainly anything is possible.

Regardless I like it a lot!

  2. The only mark I see on the wood on the bottom is right behind the trigger guard, as pictured here.

Very curious about the type of wood the stock is made from as well...

  3. I'm no expert either, but I'd guess walnut by grain of the wood, although it is rather light in color. According to the book "Crown Jewels, The Mauser in Sweden", until 1915 all original stocks on Swedish M94 carbines & M96 rifles were French walnut. So it would be interesting to see what the markings on the bottom of the stock are.

  4. You've got a real un-common rifle there, 6.5 caliber I presume ? Good to see one relatively un-molested .

Yes, it is 6.5x55. And it does look to me to be basically in original shape, although I am new enough to these I don’t know that I could spot refurb markings if they even exist.

One of my favorite parts of milsurp collecting is running across old stuff like this and just thinking back about the years and circumstances it has seen!

  5. Ran across this one recently and was very pleased with my first range trip with it.

Rifle itself is all matching right down to the wood and cleaning rod.

Bayonet does not match numbers but was a cool bonus I thought.

The target shows my first 10 shots with it. This was only at 50 yards but that is the farthest distance my range offers.

    Enjoy!

  6. Guess that's kinda what I figured, since that was the third comment along those lines.  I can certainly understand  that, I'd probably have the same kinda doubt if the situation was reversed.  We were going to move to Colorado, but it is getting so "Californicated," as they say, that we didn't want to move there and watch a great Western state get destroyed.
So the good news is:  I don't have any Damn Yankee ways to bring  with me.  And I'm damn glad of that!

It certainly wasn’t anything personal at all. Folks who think like you do will fit right in with no problem at all based on my experience.

As others have noted, some folks think they need to move places like TN so they can “fix” everything to be more like CA, NY, MA, IL, etc.

But I genuinely welcome you and think you will like it!

  7. There are so many folks leaving ILLannoy that U-Haul is having a problem getting trucks and trailers back here.  It's a one-way street.
Our state legislature is now voting for all sorts of gun control madness.  Can't wait to get the hell outta here!

bersaguy:  Thanks!  We're now in Streamwood, between Elgin and Schaumburg.  That's about 35 miles NW of downtown Chicago.  Spent 30 years in Park Ridge.

Thanks for all the good wishes, everyone.  Looks like we've got a shooting party at ORSA with this group right here.  Terrific!

Welcome aboard from Cookeville, just a little west of where you will be. I went to school in a NW Suburb, got out, moved back down to TN, and have never been tempted to go back other than for brief visits.

As others have said you will love it here. Beautiful scenery, good quality of life, minimal communist interference.

Just don’t go trying to change too much stuff!!!

    But seriously, WELCOME!

  8. That is exactly why all of my grandchildren are home schooled. They don't need to learn all that trash they teach kids in school these days. My Daughter In Law got her degree to teach so she holds class for all the school age grand children and is actually paid by 4 other families to have her teach their children. She has been doing this about 10 years now and goes back every 2 years to renew her teaching degree.
None of my grand children plan on going to college anyway but will do like their parents did and go to a Trade School and earn a trade working with their hands and brains.
On the other side of the family on daughter side my oldest grandson got his teaching degree and he is doing the teaching on that side with grand children and he also is teaching 7 children from 5 other homes and being paid for teaching them. He just went and renewed his teaching degree last month. If it is as all possible Home Schooling is best these days..............IMHO

This is why we home school ours, and I am the child of a recently retired public educator, who agrees wholeheartedly!

  9. I am wrestling with the same thing. I have had one and liked it ok but didn’t love it, and traded out of it for stuff I liked better. But I am mulling over the idea of a Saint as you are. Trying to decide if I need one bad enough to part with stuff I like better...

  10. Nice.  Are the German variants a lot harder to find than the Bulgarian, Polish, etc.?

In my experience they are a little tougher to find but they are out there. Usually several on GunPoker at any given time. I like trying to find stuff at prices more reasonable than what you find on auction sites too so that makes the search a little more involved, but hey that is half the fun!

I really like the fit and finish on them compared to others.

  11. Sounds like we are expecting 1-3 in around the Cookeville area. The kids were disappointed with the last “storm” so we will see if things turn out better for them this time.

  12. Buy Serbian?

Aim Surplus has PPU in most calibers at a fair pricing.

    My experience with .30cal, .303, 7.62x25, .380, and 9mm has been good.

^^^THIS! I have had pretty good experiences with PPUs FMJ, SP, and Match Grade stuff in 54r across several firearms. Plus it is brass cased!

But I will miss Tula in x39...
