My wife and I have carry permits and I have been shooting recreationally on/off all my life. On a handful of occasions my kids, in earlier years (now 11 & 13), have fired a crappy little .25 (Sat Night Spec) semi auto that jams every 5th round, a .22 rifle as well as my dad’s M1 Carbine. They’re not really “into†it. As far as my wife goes she just wants to test fire her .38 hammerless S&W revolver to make sure it works then plans to stick it under the car seat ( I know, I know). I like to shoot old battle rifles and shoot em often. I have various handguns that I will fire and cycle but I am not very good on target so I get bored and blow it off. The three times I’ve done IDPA (great fun) I’m always at or close to last place.
I would probably be a candidate for a more advanced pistol training class but I wonder if there are any ranges or shooting schools/programs that offer some kind of family/household training. I can show my kids how to shoot but they get bored quickly and I want a professional hands-on experience for them (and for me). What should an 11 year old do if a stranger kicks in the door? Where should we keep them? Pick it up and do what? I would want them to run drills like open a desk, drawer pick it up, check the safety and fire down range. That sort of stuff.
I'm in the Nashville area. Any ideas or services?

As long as it's not loaded and the hand gun is separated (someone define) from the ammo.

I was pulled over in a little town west of Nashville and when the officer came back to give me my ticket he noted I had a carry permit and asked if I was carrying. Frankly I was a bit caught off guard / surprised that he knew this. Of course in retrospect it made sense. I told him I was and he politely suggested I let an officer know in the future just incase he were to see it undisclosed and have to escalate his lever of awareness/reaction. Not exactly his words but my interpretation. He was cool. It was fine. I got a ticket L.
Shared with my buddy and he told bout a time last year that he was pulled over coming back from the range with a loaded pistol up front. Gave the officer his license and carry permit letting him know he had a loaded weapon within reach. The officer thanked him and was about to go back to the patrol car to do his thing and came back to ask if there were any other weapons in the car. While not required to he did admit there were assorted other unloaded firearms in the trunk as he was driving back from the range. Looooong pause. The officer got short and curt and asked him to step out. Never rummaged the vehicle or anything but had him sit in the back of the patrol car while he was written a ticket for speeding.
I know these are mild stories compared to other experiences some may share and thank goodness we don’t live in DC, Chicago or NY. I’ve met several cops that support citizen carry rights and several others including ex-military that say local police forces and the US citizenry would never tolerate a national weapons round up. My question is. . . are we now open to activist discrimination because we are recorded on government records as having applied for a received carry permit? I’m a little wary of SBR’ing my Draco for the same reason. I know we don’t have literal gun registration (yet) but 5, 10, 15 years from now some progressive adaptation of State/Fed govt can dig up these records to target the collection of firearms and persecute us who have them. Been done time after time in the ramp up to authoritarian regimes. I guess reading “Death By Gun Control†by Zelman & Stevens has got me paranoid.

I am not a ballistics wizard and I know the 7.62x39 is not a terribly accurate round. But it does have punching power. I am seeking to put together a Draco SBR.
I am wondering if anyone has made comparisons about how these three rifles + ammo would compare in accuracy, velocity and fragmentation between, say 50, 100 & 200 yds. Just your standard Milsurp FMJ tin ammo.

This was the worst rifle I ever owned.

I did sell it to a guy that just wanted to hang it on thw wall of his "man cave".

You're not still a newbie are ya?

That Barret is amazing stuff on copper fouling but so/so on carbon. Ooops was this another WHAT-TO-DO-ABOUT-CORROSIVE-AMMO thread? Sorry off topic.

UPDATE
Well, it's a TA11E. The seller was a small gun shop that took this in on trade from a vet. It does look like it's seen "action". Maybe it had but, much to my relief, not via government contract. I think the assumption was it was “mil-surp” or as some infer “mil-HOT”. I was ignorant. That’s why I post these things. To get educated. Thank you very much.
Seller was willing to give me the serial number and I called Trijicon. Very nice gal in service told me that when they receive items in for service they check the serial numbers. If it was sold on a federal, state, local or other government agency recorded contract they are obliged to tell that agency. It will be up to that agency whether they choose to investigate it or not. They would in fact service the unit and return it to me either way.
I nervously gave her the serial number but she assured me she would have to have possession of it before they notified any agencies. Came back clean. Whew. So I picked it up for $330. Hundred bucks each for them to swap the front and rear glass and I’ll be into if for about $550 when it’s all said and done.
Not bad. Not bad. Might plant it on the Argy FAL I’m building. Or may try it on my M1a. Would probably be happiest on an AR10.

I gotta drive to Chattanooga so I'm gonna visit Dan tomorrow at VoW and see if he wants to take on what I want to do. We'll see.

I have a chance to buy this ACOG (3.5x35 wi .308 Reticle) at a ridiculously low price but it’s Mil-Surp and the front and rear glass have mild scratches all over making it pretty hazy. I’m not sure it can be a fruitful purchase. Because it’s mil-surp I’m told that if I send it to Trijicon they will confiscate it. Is this true? I don’t know what they would charge to service this but is it even serviceable by anyone other than Trijicon?
I was told that some kind of glass polishing business might be able to buff it out. Would Trijicon sell the glass?
Thoughts? Ideas?

Isn't that the gunplumber? If so, he's very good at what he does. He's also a douche bag for a human being and I'm with you, I'd buy a Century arms and take a gamble before I'd give him a dime.
Judge for yourself.

Thanks but definitely NOT him !!!

Greetings, Just purchased an Argentine FAL kit. Will probably go with an Imbel or (Argy specific) Coonan receiver.
Looking for a "real" gunsmith/builder that will put this together with a guarantee on his work. Anybody got any solid referrals?

Bring it to the goodman show this morning, and if you see a guy carrying a Nambu, talk to him. I'll probably take if off you hands if you're only looking to get your $100 back.
Sorry coldblackwind. I never made it out there today. There is another fella says he wants it and I'm now holding it till we can connect in a week. If it doesn't work out with him I'll update the post in a week or so.

Seriously, Anyone local wanna come get this thing? I need the room in my safe.

Ugh - I shoulda posted this sooner. I literally just came through Knoxville on my way back from Gatlinburg. Sorry Supafly.
Yea, it looks like it could use a new crown at the muzzle but mainly I think it's just a spent stock. The bolt and action look great. Your right. The sights are lame for distance as are all of those old Mausers but they are soooo capable of Tulahoma level shooting if you wanna jack em up with optics. I have an incredible specimen in a 1909 Argentine I picked up at a pawn shop nearby. The "hold" is tricky to find but once you settle in you can smack distant plates round after round. I'm mainly a plinker.

K-Kale from 1942
I bought this cosmoline soaked antique Jihad War Stick for a hundred bucks from a gunsmith. Took it home, scrubbed the stock for about a half hour in hot water with a little Dawn and a plastic bristle brush. Dried it out and applied a little custom BLO blend. It seemed to clean up acceptably but I discovered a minor crack on the upper hand guard and behind the receiver. I degreased all parts including a bolt disassembly. Brought it all back to the gunsmith to reassemble proper and tight, headspace check, fix cracks and test fire for another $46 bucks.
Range report: I ran three bandos of 1940's Turkish ammo though it. It shot 3-4ft groups at 300yds and 1-2ft groups at 100. When it got hot it became very difficult to extract (normal). The front band retainer has warped itself out of the hand-guard and wont stay put so now the front band now slides off freely. I'm sure the stock is (no pun intended) "shot". When I finally put it down for the last time I picked up my Garand and slapped 300yd steel plates shot after shot.

This is probably the most miserable rifle I've ever fired. The bore is shiny and the action is nice. Bolt is great inside and out. It probably has a second life worth re-evaluating in fresh wood as a sporter but I'm not gonna put any more time and money into it. I'm probably gonna ditch it.

"On April 13, 2009 the ten millionth Model 870 was produced, and the 870 holds the record for best-selling shotgun in the history of the world."
$200-300, used in a number of pawn shops. I got mine with long and short barrels.

Do you have to clean the gas system and bolt as well?

So the answer I received on other forums is corrosive primers are far more reliable after long term or adverse storage.
Better to send one down a rusty barrel than not to send one at all.

Greetings,
Just took delivery of a custom assembled 8mm Serbian M76 DMR. I asked the builder to put in a Red Star Arms (RSA) adjustable 2-stage trigger group. But when I got the rifle back I noticed it had a very crusty feeling Tapco G2. He would probably change it out for me but I don’t want to deal with time and shipping. Plus the RSA is boo koo adjustable and if I wanna tweak I’d rather be near someone local to run it to or show me how to do it.

I might try it all myself but I have bad thumbs and the instructions look a little gnarly.

Just wondering why corrosive primers are/were still being used by the 90’s. I always thought corrosive primers were an “old†technology thing that ComBloc countries and others continued b/c it was cheaper or too expensive to make the conversion.
Bigger question: What is the history of corrosive vs. non corrosive primers up to today? Who still uses and why?
