Hmm. Thanks. Why would they want to do that? Trying to get re-elected?

Can you guys tell me what this means? Taken Off Notice For Cal. in s/c Criminal Practice and Procedure of JUD of Judiciary Committee 03/10/2010 That's the last action on the bill. What is that? Taken off the calendar for "sub-committee"? (s/c)

I just received my gun belt from CompTac. Ordered Friday, arrived today. That's fast service. The belt makes a huge difference in comfort, holds the holster steady and in place vastly better, and snugs the gun up against the body way better for better concealability. It's a nice looking belt too. Should go well with just about any attire except full dressy. I thought I'd share a few pics with you guys/gals in case anyone is considering CompTac for a belt. I like the fact that the belt is kydex reinforced so it isn't supposed to relax after some usage like all belts do.

Sweet! That means my beginner's "concealment-Fu" is working. Now, you just need to buy a house down the street from us and we'll be good to go!

To give an update, I had custom leather ordered for my belt, holster and mag pouch. The delivery time was still 12 weeks out from this Monday and I decided I need a functional carry rig NOW. So, based on some recommendations on the 1911 forum, I ordered a Tucker "The Answer" holster, a Comp-Tac belt and mag pouch. Since ordering the Tucker holster, I was surprised to find some negative comments about the Answer holster on this forum (could have been the Silent Thunder but the issue was with the leather lining). Something about the leather lined kydex being a solution looking for a problem. I don't know about that, but on the 1911 forum and other forums there were lots of threads I found where people weren't happy about their kydex holster aggressively wearing away at their gun's finish. (I'm sure this is not a problem with a polymer framed gun but with a blued 1911 frame...). Anyway, I prefer the look of leather wear on a gun from the pics I've seen online, so I decided to go with the leather lining. I would prefer the custom 5 Shot leather I had ordered but I just need something much more quickly than 3 months. I haven't read but one or two posts on any forum of people who weren't very happy with their "Answer" holster, and lots of people were recommending them. With the warranty and the quality of the build, I figured it is worth a try. I would imagine the leather lining will also make the gun "seat" well in the holster and prevent it from moving around. If I end up not liking the holster, I'll send it back and get an MTAC and deal with the wear. I'm brand new to CCW and my gun is new. I understand a carry gun is a tool and is going to experience some wear and tear from daily carry. But, that is different than just saying "oh, screw it! To Hades with the gun's finish", lol. I still want to do what I can to take care of my gun. I try to take good care of all my stuff. Hopefully I made a good choice in my carry rig. I can post a review of the stuff when it comes in and I wear it a bit if anyone is interested.

Just wanted to give an update since I've received the safes several days ago. I think these are a great buy for the money. They aren't the most sturdy box available. However, for the price and risk I think they will do the job for most people. There is also the size difference to think about. These safes are small. They seem much smaller than other options. When the delivery arrived and I saw the box, I was upset initially because I didn't think there was any way possible for it to have two safes in it. But, they were both there, packed tight. The typical thief breaking into a car in a parking lot during business hours (I wouldn't use one of these safes or any car safe for overnight storage.), would not likely have the correct tools to get into one of these boxes, or the time to get through the braided steel cable. So, I'm happy with the purchase. I put my wife's H&K subcompact in the medium safe, and my compact 1911 (4 1/4") in the large safe. Both safes had enough room to accommodate a spare magazine, and with a little craftiness perhaps two spare magazines. The guns don't move around in the safes at all. I closed the safes and turned them up vertical and gave them a good shake. The 1911 magazine rattled around a little but the guns did not budge. The foam padding that comes in the safes does stink to high heavens. It's like concentrated moth balls. I've left them opened in the living room the past 3-4 days. The smell has decreased, but the first day we came home, the entire living room smelled like moth balls! This feature is the only real bad feature of the safe as far as I'm concerned. The safe has to be pressed a little while turning the key so the latch glides smoothly without resistance. This means the safe is built tight. There is a piece of thicker, more rigid steel welded along the sides to help defend against prying. If you have any questions about them , just shoot me a PM.

We went several places last night. Went to get me a hair cut, wife went to the grocery store during that. Then we went to the bank, Lowe's and Wally World. I don't believe anyone noticed. No one said anything, and I figured if anyone would notice it'd be the hair stylist since she got the closest view with me sitting down and getting up out of the chair. It will take some practice getting used to wearing a holster, mag pouch and knife. I was kinda surprised that my holster was not very comfortable last night at all. I hope it was because I had my Dockers on from work and had on business/casual attire. Those pants are a little too conforming around the waist area. It wasn't as uncomfortable when I wore it around the house one night with jeans on. Those jeans are looser than the Dockers I have. I think the main problem was the dress belt that was skimpy and had to be a hair too tight to get latched. So, I picked up a 1.5" wide Wrangler belt while at Wally World. It was the stiffest wide belt they had. It will have to hold me until my custom leather order comes in a couple of months or so from now. The holster I'm using until I get my leather order is a knock off of a Milt Sparks Summer Special 2 with the double belt loops. When we got home, I was curious so I tried on my wife's MTAC holster with her H&K gun and it was a little slimmer and a little more comfortable than the leather. So, I did a price comparison between Comp-Tac's MTAC, gun belt plus mag pouch and my custom leather order. There's $101 difference with shipping (Comp-Tac is less costly). That kinda has me wanting an MTAC. That and the delivery time difference, ...which is HUGE right now. My two concerns about the MTAC are: 1) the sweat shield (the leather between the rear of the slide and the body), poked me in the love handle pretty badly when I sat down wearing it. This was not pleasant. It was also a bit difficult to draw from and pulled the holster completely out on the first try. I hope this will get better after some breaking in because that could result in some serious consequences in a real self defense situation! 2) I have a S&W 1911. The frame is Scandium and is blued or painted. The slide is stainless with a matte finish. I know leather will wear along the lines of the gun, but I don't think that kind of wear looks all that bad. I've seen several pictures of this kind of wear online. I've read that the kydex/hybrids can be rough on the finish where it contacts. I think I prefer the more gentle looking wear of leather over the defined wear of kydex on a 1911. But, I haven't seen pics of wear on a 1911 from a kydex holster so I can't be sure how big the difference is. Just going on what I've read in forums. I did look on the 1911forum.com last night at a thread of people posting their EDC rigs. Pretty much every MTAC I see with a 1911 in it, has a full stainless 1911, ...no blued 1911s in MTACs. That made me wonder about the wear even more. With those two concerns in mind, what would you guys do/have to say and what is your opinion? There's a significant money savings if I go with the MTAC, and I like how it rides low along the pant line. Mostly I'm concerned about the wear of the MTAC on my 1911. I know there will be wear on the gun. I get that. I just don't see a reason to throw all discretion to the wind and trash it just "because" it's a carry gun. I'm also concerned about the holster staying put when drawing.

My wife and I just found our permits in the mailbox! Applied and printed on 2/2/10, received permit today on 3/3/10. What's that? 29 days? Now we're gonna take a walk to Wally World to break in our carry rights while we do some shoppin'.
-
Could you not bolt and cable it somewhere else in the CRV? Just an idea. But admittedly not as convenient.
-
Hmm. My wife drives a CRV and I don't anticipate any fit issues under the seat whatsoever. I had a look yesterday and there's plenty of room, if you're talking about the same box I'm talking about. They are only 1.75" thick. From the looks of the seat in the CRV, there appears to be 2-3" of clearance under there. The passenger's side has a storage area under the seat built in, ...and I'd say it's well over 1.75".

Mine is primarily going to be used when we can't carry: 1) into the gym to work out since I'm not going to be weight training with a .45 on my side, lol 2) *when* the bill passes that allows teachers to have guns locked up in their cars while on school grounds, my wife will keep her's locked up in her car while on the job. So, there's two good reasons to have one for my household. Until the legislation allowing permit holders to carry into a restaurant serving alcohol passes, it can be used for that. I'm not going to totally give up going to my favorite restaurants even though the laws are dumb. Also, I may be uncomfortable carrying in a friend's home when they are uncomfortable with the fact and it can't be hidden from them. The safe will come in handy then. For those who are interested, ...I found a review for the COM safe here: http://forum.pafoa.org/general-2/13275-center-mass-car-gun-safe-review.html

Thanks Pops. I went ahead and placed the order for a medium and large. The Microvault MV500 looks really nice. Quite pricey compared to this one I ordered though. It does have convenient, quick access though. Might look into that in the future when money isn't an object.

Yeah, ...that foam stuff can be wretched. Airing it out for a few days before putting it in the safe in the car may help. Had to do that with the mattress topper. Thanks guys!

Pulled my weapon for the first time.Opinions?
tt0511 replied to Jack's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I can see both sides of what people are saying, ...but man, if someone was heading at me and my loved ones, in MY driveway, in a very non-typical kind of situation, in a 3000+ lb. wrecking ball, ....I *think* I would be in fear of imminent death or serious bodily injury and would probably do the same as you. And, ...I'm not so sure I agree with the officer in this situation but I think you would have had to be there to really be sure about that. I don't know how to interpret these yahoos actions other than a threat. If they were drunk and being crazy, ...that's no excuse. Sometimes the law is not on the side of righteousness. In those cases, I'll side with righteousness and "to Hades" with the law. -
Hi ya'll. I was about to pull the trigger and order a couple of these safes for the car. Thought I'd check here for some thumbs-up or thumbs-down opinions before making the purchase. They look like a decent safe and they look convenient. Which would be better: keyed lock or combination lock, and why? I was thinking combination but then thought getting a key in and turning under stress may actually be easier than trying to thumb in a combination. Seems like a more simple movement to insert the key. If you have any comparable safe ideas you like better, please post a link so I can check it out. Thanks! In Car Gun Safe

That was a really incredible video. Thanks for the post. It's really sad he had to defend himself so many times. He was lucky in that he got shot so many times and it never even hit a vital organ, he didn't end up paralyzed, etc. One lucky, tough, modern day Wyatt Earp. I admire his ability to keep such a cool head under such high stakes and pressure. It's good to see the score: good guy - 3, ...bad guys - 0. If all the good citizens would stand up and take up for themselves and those around them, ...I think thugs would be much more difficult to come by. It just wouldn't be worth it for them. I think it carries a lot of weight when a common, everyday man like this stresses the importance of defensive firearm training and practice. Can't wait to get me and the wife into our first class. -
Maybe I'm just too new to handguns, but, ...seriously, you're going to ditch your new Sig because it won't run one particular ammo? It runs every ammo perfectly except your one brand of reloads, ...and you are ditching it? It really sounds like the fault of the ammo rather than the gun. Of course, at the moment, my only handgun is a 1911 and they can be picky on ammo because of the platform so perhaps I have a predisposition to thinking you are being a bit rash in your decision. My mother-in-law recently got a Sig P250. It feels and shoots like a good quality piece and we haven't had a hiccup with it. Of course, we aren't shooting reloads either. I just hate to see you take such a $$$ hit because of one brand of ammo. I'd buy it from you, but I hated the trigger pull. It felt ten miles long to me.

Sorry it took so long to post the last information I received from my friend, the LEO. After his previous messages to me, he left me a message stating that he spoke to his sergeant with a couple of others standing around, about carrying a gun in your car on school property if you are a teacher. He said they immediately said "NO", ...but then the sergeant immediately said "of course, we'd never enforce that", lol. So, right now it seems that it's not legal to do so. Which, ...makes sense considering the aforementioned new legislation is addressing that very thing. Hopefully that will go into effect soon.

Scandium Frame 1911 and magazines?
tt0511 replied to tt0511's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Thanks Todd. Someone on the 1911forum helped me by posting a picture of that follower that can cause problems. It was on a Chip McCormick mag. I also found a helpful video on youtube: I have the newer style mag. Hopefully it will be perfectly dependable in my Smith like it is in this guy's Springfield. -
Scandium Frame 1911 and magazines?
tt0511 replied to tt0511's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Thanks. Someone on another forum answered the question, or more like "educated" me on the issue. Looks like the Kimber mags will work but people seem to have problems with the regular kimber mags. I may upgrade to the tac-mag as people seem to have very good reliability with them. I'm probably just being anal, but I really didn't think it was too much to ask for a 7 round magazine, blued with a flush steel base plate that will be more concealable and will also match my blued pistol frame. I don't understand why all of the acclaimed "great" magazines seem to be offered only in stainless. Does the blue-ing somehow inhibit the performance of a magazine? -
I have a Smith and Wesson 1911 Compact ES. The magazines that came with it are ACT with a base pad at the bottom that sticks out. I didn't like that so I bought a Kimber 7 round flat base magazine this weekend, and boy did it clean up the looks. I believe it may help concealability as well (once my permit comes in the mailbox). I've read a few posts on this forum, and several on another about "magazines with metal followers shouldn't be used with alloy framed 1911s". But, that's really funny because both magazines that came with my 1911 have metal followers. I've read something about how a metal follower can, ...gouge the feed ramp? If that were the case, why would Smith ship them in the ES? I have seen in some of the posts that say not to use the metal follower equipped magazines, that they are talking about "aluminum" framed 1911s. I don't know how Scandium compares to aluminum. I sent an email to Smith asking them if using the Kimber mag in the ES would damage it, but in the meantime I'm curious to know what you guys think. Smith may not like me for asking about a competitor's product being used in their gun, but, their magazines aren't readily available so that's their fault. On another note, I don't know if the Kimber mag is a good magazine or not. I know people seem to prefer Wilson Combat, Tripp, Check Mate, etc. but I haven't had any trouble out of my factory ACT mags once the gun had 100-150 rounds down the pipe. I had a problem with the last round failing to load "full into battery" with one of the magazines, but it went away at the 150 round mark. The Kimber mags were the only ones I've seen available at local gun shops I've been to and I didn't really want to order over the internet if I didn't really have to. I'm trying to determine if I should return the Kimber magazine for a refund and order one of the others off the internet.

Well, ...we have one of those "nobody will find it" hiding spots, ...where someone "will" find it according to what I've read on forums. No such thing as a good hiding spot apparently. It's not simply in a drawer, in between mattresses or anything that obvious. Thing is, when our permits come in the mail, our two handguns will likely be with us most of the time. So I'm thinking training may be the right thing to do first. Protecting ourselves is more important than protecting our gun investments, right?
-
My wife and I recently got our handguns and have applied for our permits. I know we want a few more guns but that's not a necessity at the moment. I'm torn between what to save money up for first between the three items I definitely want us to have: 1) Defensive Handgun Training (with ammo, probably costs around $700 for the both of us), 2) A gun safe (looking at the Bighorn which runs around $800), 3) getting into reloading (don't know how much money is involved yet) At the present time, we only have our two handguns, I have a .22 rifle and my brother currently has my two shotguns. What do you guys/gals think?
-
We don't actually "have" our HCP's yet, but my wife and I have submitted our applications. We may or may not receive our permits by the class date. Do we qualify to register for the course?

What is IANAL? ha ha. For a second, ...I thought you were saying you were anal about something, lol. hmm....from what I've read, I'm fairly convinced that the entire intent of that section of TCA (sorry, been using TSA for "state annotated") is to protect someone defending themselves (or others) against attack from the criminal or criminal's family in civil court. "immune from civil liability". "Can't be held liable" seems straight forward to me but perhaps I have something to learn here.
