  1. Nice old knife. it was probably black smith made although I have made one like it from a saw blade and used mower section rivits to   secure a wood handle. It could have been used for just about anything. You might want to try using boiled linseed oil and hot water with steel wool to clean the handle then linseed or mineral oil to keep it from drying out. Vegatble oils can get rancid and stink when used on wood.

  2.      I am an SCV member and go to lots of events but I don't re- enact as a soldier. My wife and I do living history demonstrations as civilians. Start by talking to people in your camp that re- enact then go to an event or two and ask about  weapons. men I know are glad to advise and many will have a rifle or so they would part with. Also you can go to the Blockade Runner between Wartrace and Bell Buckle. The Smiths (owners) are good folks and have most of what you would need. They to will advise you on guns and clothes.

  3. Start asking people in your area where you can find someone sawing local cedar. If you can find someone selling salvaged lumber easter red cedar or hard yellow pine will do. Thing is it will cost you more than good quality pressure treated lumber.

  4. I know some of the folks that were envolved in the monument progect you spoke of. My great Granddaddy began and ended his time in yankee prison camps at point lookout. I was also involved in fun raising and planning for the sesquicentenial event at Beaviour. We are heavily envolved in living history and historical preservation. If we the people don't teach our children and grandchildren our history they will continue to elect the same type of people to office we have had in the last few years.    Deo Vendice!

  5.    I to love those old guns. Every farm had one when I was a kid. I still have the Winchester  Model 67 my uncle gave me when I was nine plus my Daddy's Model 56 Springfield he bought in 1935. Both still shoot well.

  6.     Number one; you don't need a 36 inch bar as it will restrict your ability to maneauver. I have cut many larger trees with a 20 inch Stihl saw. However for a close sittuation like that I would get a pro. Between their libility policy and your home owner policy you are covered.
