Duranon tick repellent is an excellent product. It does contain permethrin, it needs to be sprayed on the night prior to hunting, it is designed to work after it dries and works for extended periods of time.

I carry a Sig P228, 9mm in a cheap Fobus paddle holster.

Easy to get to and holds the gun in place well.
