To this day I don't know how it didn't tear a hole in my transom.

I sure thought I was going to be swimming back.  And the crazy thing was I never saw any indication of the car other than the red paint on the skeg on my lower unit.

I was going to make a wisecrack about not running your boat in the parking lot... until I realized "oh bleep. He *actually* hit a car".  Once a buddy and I hit a ~18" dia  deadhead at over 60 MPH.  It sheared the lower unit clean off the motor.

  2. I have had two artificial lenses put in (cataracts ruined my eyes).  I did have dry-eye syndrome, and it continues, but the new eyeballs are simply spectacular. (BTW, I paid all of my costs, and it was worth it)

  3. Toops.  Related but sorta something - https://theaviationist.com/2017/02/19/u-s-air-force-deploys-wc-135-nuclear-sniffer-aircraft-to-uk-after-spike-of-radioactive-iodine-levels-detected-in-Europe/

This is interesting - and evidence of how an incident can be difficult to pinpoint quickly.

Probably *not* a nuke test, as CTBTO would be screaming bloody murder. (unless it was a colossal dud)

Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) - http://www.ctbto.org/specials/who-we-are/ (runs a very effective world-wide network of "Nuke-Boom" detection systems)

Ok, here is something many here can comment on.

I'm relatively young and wasn't even alive yet when Chernobyl happened. Now, it was a different time and the internet was barely existent, but was there as much "OMG THE SKY IS FALLING" over Chernobyl as there seems to be for Fukushima?

There seems to be a lot of hysteria right now in certain corners, I'm merely trying to form my own opinion on whether the hysteria is warranted.

No.  I worked in a health physics instrument calibration lab at the time, and it was of great interest to us. It was in the media for a while, and *closely* followed by HPs for most of a decade, but not anything like current situation. (It took a week or more for the plume to arrive in Europe, and several more weeks to "blow up", then media died down in a year or so.)

I personally feel like Astana has something to do with the deterioration of our ecosystem.

Astana does not hold a candle to the Mayak complex.   Not even orders of magnitude close.

I don't have a Note, but I use my Galaxy S5 phone on TGO a lot. I don't have those issues on it. Have you updated your operating system to the latest? I'm running Marshmallow Android 6.0.1. I don't know if that will affect it or not though.

I do have the Tapatalk issue on my iPad though. My Safari browser logs me out everytime I leave TGO for more than about 5mins, and I have to log back in eventhough I check remember me or whatever. Actually, it's done that since before the upgrade I just never mentioned it. However, Tapatalk wanting me to join everytime I log in is new for me.

    Thanks,

The Note 10.1 is up to date, but running the original OS version of Android (4.1.2).  It has zero glitches, so I have not thought about upgrading the OS (and probably would just get a new tablet someday).

  7. OK, I am slow to bring this up, maybe even just slow...

But since all the <shudder> "changes"  in the last month, my Android tablet ( - aging Samsung Note 10.1 using the standard OEM browser) no longer cooperates.

    1. it seems to *really* want me to install Tapatalk (I have resisted for years, preferring the regular innerdwebz browzer)

    2. It shows all the forum listings, but will not open any threads (nor will it open "unread")

Any tips out there to get me going sans installing Tapatalk for TGO?  It otherwise browses other's site content just fine - looks just like the "big" computer.

    Thanks,  B.

  8. My team and I were coming back from San Carlos Bariloche, Argentina, and were in the airport lounge in Buenos Aires.

We noticed a *lot* of activity by security, and the local public address system calling out every few moments. After about a half-hour (Our Spanish was poor), I realized that the PA was naming a very poor rendition of my *partner's* name!

My partner shyly raised his hand, and motioned to a security guard.  He was escorted off by 3-4 very annoyed guards.

The problem - A *large* equipment case 36"x24"x24", that they could not x-ray (too much attenuation).  The cause?  Chocolate bars.  The case was full of chocolate. Bariloche is the chocolate capital of South America, and... apparently, chocolate bars remind x-ray technicians of you got it... explosives.  A half-pound lighter (for their troubles), the case went on to baggage check-in, and our team member was returned to us - slightly embarrassed, but relieved.

Must be overloaded.  No matter where I click on the globe, I get "station unresponsive" and it sounds like I'm tuning thru the lower end of the 40m band on my Swan 350 :P

heh.  THAT brings back memories.  I had a Hallicrafters S38 when I was a kid.

Not much info in that story. I wonder how old there are; they could have released that. But they must believe they set them intentionally with those charges.

14 people dead and no telling how many going through painful burn recovery. Terrible.

I listened to the press conference, and that was asked.  The officials cited law, and declined to answer.
