Recrown and Drill/Tap in Chattanooga

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

So I am starting a mosin nagant sporterized build as my first project for 2011. (sorry purists - you won't enjoy this)

I am looking for someone in or around Chattanooga who has an 11 degree recrowning tool and guide for the 7.62x54r bore (I believe a .308 guide will work)

I want to shorten the barrel and install the Rock Solid Scope mount

Mosin Nagant

I am willing to pay anyone who can help me with this (gunsmith or otherwise) it just seems silly to pay 65 bucks for a recrowning tool I am going to use once on a $79 rifle.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Lucas

I have 90 degree and .45 degree cutters and a .308 pilot. Have never fiddled with the 78 degree cuts only because I didn't want to buy an extra set.

If you can't find anyone with exactly what you need I will be glad to let you come by my shop and we can crown it there.

I can cut a dovetail too, but I don't currently have any unbroken 6-40 or 6-48 taps.

Hey pie thanks a lot I may take you up on that offer.

I never considered doing the 45-90 just because it involved even more tools that I don't have.

Part of this if I want to learn how to do some of this stuff. This is my first real gunsmithing project, I've always just bought off the shelf.

I'm guessing it would come out something like this: (top picture)

11 Degree Target Crown

Thanks again

Nope...the top picture is something only a lathe can do.

A 90/45 cut is where you cut it to desired length, file it till it looks straight, use the 90 degree cutter to true it up, and then use the 45 cutter to put a very small 1-2 mm cut right at the crown to ensure it is perfect. Then you lap the 45 with valve grinding compound to eliminate chatter or burrs. You then take sandpaper to roll the sharp edge on the outside of the barrel and are done. It is a very simple and no frills crown....used by most manufacturers.
