Ok, my first thread, not including my intro.

I had purchased this rifle about 10 years ago. shot some 1965 surplus ammo & had the primer fall out & lock the bolt down (the round did fire) & had to have a buddy get the bolt open.

well, It got dropped off to the gunsmith today to have everything checked & to replace the rear leaf sight. (it has a flake of metal off to the left of the rear notch that throws off the sights).

I've been thinking about getting into target shooting (&IDPA) & would like to know if anybody has any good recomentations about using this rifle in comeptions, cmp appleseed 3gun IDPA etc etc.

I have thought about adding a scope to the enfeild, however I'm not sure.

also, does anybody have some good recomendations for ammo? I'm leary of surplus ammo.

Don't know about High Power matches they were never my thang but you would be way behind the curve in 3 Gun with a bolt action. Some of the stages require over 20 rds and a fast reload is key to doing well,in addition to hitting the target.:)

I'm not familiar with any match shooting, but the SMLE is the fastest bolt action rifle around, with a 10 shot magazine. It's not as big a handicap as would be say, a Mosin-Nagant or a Mauser, if rapid fire is an advantage. Even so, I doubt it would be ideal for matches designed for modern semi-automatic rifles, if that is indeed what the matches were designed for.
