Shotgun stock question

Alright, opening day of dove season this year I was using my dad's Ithaca Model 900 12 gauge he let me borrow a year or so back.

After a few birds I noticed the receiver was a bit loose and when I looked down, there was a split in the stock where it joined the receiver. I didn't have a backup gun, and the dove were flying *big* time where we were, so I did what any red-blooded hunter would do: started asking around for duct tape.

I wrapped the stock and continued hunting (killed more birds after the repair than before).

After I got home I took off the stock, gently pulled back the split and worked some gorilla glue into the cracks and clamped it down. I haven't fired the gun since. The glue job seems to have held.

The only place in NA that has a replacement stock for this gun is in Canada just across the border from Buffalo. He told me that in order to make sure the patch job worked, I needed to "reseat" the stock, as that might have caused the problem in the first place.

Has anyone done this to a gun before? Is it difficult? Is it necessary or was he trying to get me to buy a replacement stock from him?

Thanks
