  1. I"e had no problem finding primers in brick and mortar stores. Academy had an end shelf full yesterday when I was there. They also had 9mm and 45 boolits. Sportsmans had no shortage either a couple of weeks ago when I walked through the reloading dept. I wasn't buyng since I don't need anything and was enjoying the view. LOL! Are online prices really saving you that much money? Maybe I need to go online.

I've yet to ever find an online primer price that I couldn't beat within 1hr of me. I by them by the case (5,000) and usually buy multiple cases so that knocks the price down a bit I'm sure. I typically can get the between $20-$25 per thousand and pick them up when imgoing to be driving close by for other reasons or at a gun show that I was planning on going to anyways.
  2. I've not had the opportunity to hunt yet and was late getting cameras out but I'm hoping to get out a few evenings this week. Looks like is been a slow season so far. I have had a couple that I think are shooters show up on camera since I put them out 1.5 weeks ago so it gives me something to chase.

I am pretty certain that I'll take this one if given the opportunity.

This one I'm unsure of. He's fairly tall but I can't tell much more about him.

  3. I sure wish they were local to me. I haven't had time to look at much yet but it did seem like some of their 8# jugs of powder were $30-$45 cheaper than Outpost Armory which is the only local reloading supply shop to me. I can be at the shops in Nashville in an hour but their prices are about the same so I end up buying 95% of my powder through David. I will definitely stop by next time we go to east to though.
  4. I had never heard of Wideners before. I've run through a many of those projectiles back when David had the pulls consistently. I'd buy a few thousand at every gun show. As a matter of fact I had just reached my (personally set) minimum inventory last month and I don't think that I had bought any since everything dried up during "The Great Panic". I actually increased my shooting during that time and kept a handful of others in ammo while things were scarce so there's no telling how many thousands of those things I had put back. I still try to buy pretty much all my supplies through David I don't hit the gun shows much any more and it's a 1-1.5hr drive to his house so when I go, I try I restock on everything.
Thanks for the link, I'll check them out.

  5. I keep meaning to post this but life has been kicking my butt lately and haven't had much inter webs time. Surplusammo.com runs a 24hr sale every month or so on Armscor 55gr fmj and I think the sale price is around $281 + shipping for 4,000 projectiles. The shipping bumped it up to $320 ($0.08 ea) which is better than anything I've sourced locally in some time.
Here's where it gets good, they have now gone to free shipping on them and I think that's all the time so that puts you at about $0.07ea when on sale. I found out that they have a coupon code "saarocks!" Which takes an extra 5% off every item you purchase (even sale items) which put my last purchase at about $0.065 per projectile.
You can buy them in lesser qty (500,1,000 or 2,000) if you want but the price does go up slightly.
I think the non sale price is like $29? So use the code and free shipping option and it's still pretty cheap.
Anyways, just thought I'd post this in case anyone else is tired of paying $89+ per thousand like I was. If the code doesn't work then try it without the "!" But I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be there and I'm pretty sure it said that the code was good all the time.

  6. So the good news... today was probably the most perfect day to be in a field. My 3rd attempt at an arrow plug (cut down an arrow for a mag plug for my 930) was a success and the gun ran flawlessly. The 870 worked too, I just like the lack of effort required to run a semi-auto. I had a great time with my friends.

The bad news... we only saw about a dozen birds from 2pm to almost 7. This was the same field a group got almost 50 from last weekend. :/ My very first shot was lined up perfect... he was flying away in a straight line, like a radius from the middle of a circle, with me being the starting point. I pull the trigger... nothing. Wha? I look down... safety is on. :/ Flipped it off, got back on the bird but he was too far gone. I missed the next one completely, and got a couple feathers on the last one that was close enough to attempt a shot on, but he kept on flyin'. My buddy was a little further up the hill and got two, but he was the only one to connect at all out of 5 of us today. The other four were veterans, I was the newb.

Best part of the night was dinner... this family eats GOOD! Smoked, bacon wrapped pheasant, quail, venison, and so much more. He also grilled burgers, pork chops, and chicken breast, but that tray didn't even get touched!

Well I'm glad the fellowship was thicker than you say the birds were. As long as one of them are okay then all is good.
Maybe you'll get another chance to go this year. I'd offer to take you when I get back into town but I'm not sure when season goes out and I'll be full bore trying to finish prepping for deer season. If I should happen to have time to go again I will let you know.
Glad the "custom" high performance carbon fiber plug worked out for you!
  7. K. You have seriously caused me mental anxiety about the 930 now. This guy is getting wood tomorrow. Wait... that didn't sound right.

Also, I've still got that 10mm brass in my truck waiting until I see you next so if I make it up there this evening I'll let you know regardless whether you need help making the plug or not.

    WAY to personal!!!!
Check out the plastic plug in your 870 and you'll see kinda what you're shooting for. I just remembered something,, the rod will need something bigger than the spring attached to the end so that it stays up at the end of the mag tube even when you have less than three shells in it. I just cut a small disc of cardboard (basically a cardboard washer) and slid it onto the wooden plug I made. The only catch is that I whittled down all but the last 1/2" of mine so that the little washer wouldn't just slide right off the top of the plug. The reason I say that's a catch is that mine is only two she'll lengths where yours would be 10, that's a lot of whittling! If you're going to Lowes or Home Depot for the dowel, you can probably find something that will clamp onto the end of the dowel that will serve the purpose. Just remember, it has to be small enough to fit inside the mag tube but as big or bigger than the spring so that it won't slide down into the spring. I'm sure this is sounding complicated but I made my last one while sitting in a dove field with nothing but a shots hell box top, a tree limb and a pocket knife so it's not to difficult lol.
I might be going up to academy sometime after 5 this evening and if I'm able to, I'd be happy to help you with it if needed.
  9. Great tip on the grocery bags for the birds. I was just wondering about that today. Think I'm gunna grab one of those game bags/dump pouches as well.

See there, I was giving you tips trying to keep costs down.. I didn't realize you were going full tactical dove hunting or I would have certainly suggested an assortment of pouches pouches ? lol.
They have some good fields in that area and hopefully this cool air moving in will drive a new bunch down from the north!
I've hunted dove with an 870 since I was 7 or 8 years old and have killed a great many birds with them.
You can cut a wooden dowel or a stick the length of 10 shells and install it under the magazine cap of your 930 and let 'er rip. If you unscrew the cap on your 870 you will find a 2 she'll length plastic version of what I'm describing. This will limit it to 3 rounds making it legal for migratory bird bird hunting.
  10. I'm reading these threads because I'm going on my very first dove hunt this weekend (first hunt of ANY type, actually) and am looking for general tips on gear, tactics, etc. Then I see all this sappy garbage about Luke E and I just had to stop it to say.... yea. He's pretty awesome! He's definitely done more for me than I could ever do for him, and with no desire for anything for himself. And his friend Tim is great as well. Some of the best folks on the board, and a really great asset to TGO and the firearms community in general.

    Kudos to Luke!

Back to your regularly scheduled hunting discussion-

Just got a 12g 870 yesterday and my bucket w/rotating seat-lid thingy. Got a nice backpack full of 200 shells (hope to get a couple birds, lol!)

    I can't wait!!!

As long as you have a shogun, seat, and shells, you will be good to go. Having 5-10 decoys to clip on a fence row or on stakes in the field can sometimes help calm the birds as they are dropping in but not at all necessary. You can buy a 5 or 6 pack of them at Wal Mart for around $10 and a sack of stakes for around $2 if they still have some in stock. Dove like to fly along power lines when coming into a field and will, a lot of times, land on the lines before committing to dropping on down to the field so if there is a power line around it will usually be at least a decent spot.
Carry a grocery sack to put you birds in and keep them off the ground and in your bucket if possible because ants find them quickly.
It's different than shooting clays so be willing to adjust you lead and patience.
Above all else, remember that dove hunting is as much about the gathering and fellowship as it is shooting birds so chatting back and forth from a distance is acceptable.
How you enjoy your first hunt!
  11. Thanks to Luke E., for taking me on a dove shoot Sunday afternoon. We hit some and missed some, but had a great time. I want everyone to know that Luke E. is a good and kind man. He went out of his way to make sure I got to go dove hunting, put me on the best shooting spot, deflected birds my way, and gave me a box of hard to find rifle ammo. It was like Christmas in September!

I've got to stop here and add that the thing that makes all of this special to me, is the big difference in our age groups. Luke is much younger than me, but made sure I had an enjoyable time and wouldn't take any pay for the ammo. He could have just gone hunting with friends in his own age group, but invited me. Being a city dweller, but having been raised on a farm, I miss taking my gun and going hunting in the field or woods.

I also have to mention that the first we met, he gave me a couple of Weaver scope bases for a Ruger 1022... and wouldn't take any pay for them either! Luke puts others before himself, and that is refreshing, given the selfish...all for/about me... world we live in these days.

Luke, thank you for your kindness to an old codger that misses more dove than he hits...but I absolutely enjoyed the hunt and comradery. Thank you for a fun hunt and the ammo.

I always enjoy the company and glad we had some birds to shoot at. Maybe I'll find a field of late corn or beans to hunt when I get back from Oklahoma.
  12. Haven't been on here too much lately Luke. I sure appreciate the invites last year, and enjoyed it a lot... even the one field where a lone dove could out maneuver 30 hunters blasting away...and nary a feather fell! The sound of anti-aircraft fire all around the field was exciting.

I found a Case skinning knife, almost like the one that got lifted from me in a military household shipment. It's buckhorn handle and stainless. Now, if I can just figure out how to get a sharp edge on it with my stone. I like an edge that will shave the hair on my arm.First time I've tried to sharpen a stainless knife. Any suggestions? It's an older knife...model 523-5 SSP .XX.

I had intentions of inviting you out for opening day at the 2nd place we hunted last year but I wasn't thinking when I planned a work trip to Oklahoma and won't be back until the 7th.
As for sharpening options, I use one of the Smith sets that you clamp the blade in a guide and the stones have a rod that slides through the guide at a consistent angle. They have them at Academy Sports in Symrna but if you have any questions just give me a call.
I gave a guy some .22 ammo several months back so that his kid could shoot and he insisted on giving me something in return. He had a box of Hornady 35gr Vmax .22 Hornet so I grabbed those for you. Maybe we can get together the 2nd week of season to shoot birds and I can get them to you then.
  13. I didn't get an email either. You have to login and get it off their site. Dolomite talked me thru it.

I'm not around a computer so I'm on my phone, I called but evidently what dolomite is seeing on his computer is different than what I'm seeing. He was going to look on his phone and call back if he found something. I guess if nothing else, I'll be around a computer in the next few hours.
  14. Awesome. Just an FYI the pdf they sent you with the picture of the stamp is your actual copy. I though that was pretty cool. I printed out two copies and also stored it in the cloud. Hope the form 4 comes through soon. I believe you talked me into that Omega. I'm hoping to go find one in person soon and check it out.

I didn't receive a pdf. My email says to log into my account for further instruction but I'm logged in and trying to figure out where to go for further instruction.
  15. I'm really hoping you get yours before Christmas.........so I can see it and make sure it's what I want to buy. If it makes you feel any better I haven't got a chance to sight mine in since getting the stamp. I shot it a few days ago and quickly learned I want a better trigger. For a non-magnified optic I don't mind mil-spec but with the scope I'd like something a little lighter.

I feel fairly certain that I'll get everything approved by then. B
  16. Lol that'll work!

I was planning on putting a sunflower field in but had a death in the family and work stuff that kept me tied up until it was to late to plant. I was really just wanting to put it in so that I would have a place for some folks like you and a few others that weren't in the good ol' boy dove hunt circle. I might can find you a place if your just looking to work up a spot and broadcast wheat (legally). When do you need to have the ground worked up by?
  17. It's awful tough to find a dove field to hunt these days. Me and Sidewinder searched high and low last year and ended up in a Tera field with 3 birds and 30 people. We did better the next week hunting on a flat rock behind a buddy's shed.
  18. Sooooooooooo I am in the middle of my next camo job and still have no idea which direction I'm going (like the one that started this thread). The difference is, this is the wife's and she wanted pink integrated into it. Good thing is, she wanted dull/light pink, not bright pink. I also started this one with high temp primer first, and just put the first coat of pink on. It looks good, better than a bright gloss pink would have. I'm going g to let it sit over night before the next coat of pink. Give me a day or two to think about a design idea. I'm taking pictures along the way and will post them when I'm done. Although the pink is so light it almost looks white in the pictures, on my small screen anyway.
    Anyway, to be continued....

Holler at me tomorrow, I may have some ideas that would help.
