I'm sure Tiger Woods could out putt most of the planet with a banana but that does not porve that a banana is the best tool.

Tell me when and where and If I can I'll be there. Also, there is a IDPA match in Dickson we can shoot. Or we can shoot a USPSA match too in Dickson or Memphis.
-
Sure.

Yep. Mathew does a pretty fine job with them. Matthew Mink

This is a great one too that shows the operation in progress. I love how you can hide different parts. http://www.m1911.org/loader.swf

Washburns are great for camping too. If you can't find kindling...........there you go.

Pretty much the opposite. In divisions where both glocks and 1911/2011s can be used the JMB pistols will out number the glocks easily 30 to 1. IDPA and USPSA, while I love both, are two completely different crowds. Nobody I compete with in USPSA would put up with anything less than 100% gun. So, if either of you glock boys want to come and shoot Limited or Open with your glock and feel that you will in anyway have an advantage because of malfuntions I welcome you with open arms. Bring it. And I think I know a little bit about giging guitar quality, and I'm taking my 1911 for sure for the session work. You can do the road gig.

Do you compete at MSSA? IDPA or USPSA?

It's all in good fun.

I don't care what anyone shoots. But I thought a forum was a place to share ideas and opinions? Besides, it is only polite to shed light on misconceptions and why they exist. Actually, I wish more folks I compete against would shoot a glock.

I think I need to say that once you get passed the tight fit of the slide, barrel, frame and the metal work, my guns are nothing but correctly built 1911s. Capable of no more reliability than any correctly built 1911. They are all designed to to be shot a lot without failing. Trouble is some companies let the guns leave their hands without being right. But that is not the platforms fault no more than if I got the rights to produce a glock and built some poorly.

Buffer spring? If you are talking about a recoil spring, it is the same in any gun. Gun springs are gun springs. There are no magic glock springs. And the recoil spring is drop in every gun I've seen. Mil-spec gun parts are drop in and much as any glock parts are. BTW the glock manual tells you to clean it after firing it and periodically otherwise. Why you hear that nothing on a 1911 is drop in is because there are so many folks making parts for 1911s and most are slightly oversized so you can get a perfect fit. Plus you have one company making a glock and dozens making 1911's. They all do parts slightly different. I know of no parts once fitted properly that all others will have to be addressed unless you are talking about the hammer sear relationship. And then yes you might need to stone both. But that is true with any modern single action as well.

I'm going to the Single Stack National this week, and I probably have shot 2k since the beginning of April. I cleaned it today (detail stripped). I will shoot another 500 before I leave on Wednesday and only give it a good wipe down before I shoot the match on Thursday and Friday. BTW, Todd Jarrett posted on facebook today that he shot 8000+ rounds the last two weeks getting ready for the Single Stack nationals. Must be nice to get ammo for free.

Hey, I won my first plaque shooting a glock at KY state. I know the platform well.

Here is a shirt you 1911 guys can buy for all you glock loving friends. It's just a joke!!!!

I'm not down on factory guns really, but what I expect from a factory 1911 and what most people expect are different. Most people buy a thousand dollar 1911 and if it has problems they say "for a thousand bucks this thing should be flawless". I say "It's amazing they are as good as they are knowing how much hands on it takes to build one correctly". I would not hesitate to buy a springer or colt or sti. I just would not be surprised if I have to adjust some things to get it to 100%. BTW, the problems are almost always the extractor. The extractor can cause FTF, FTE, stove pipes, 3 point jams. And often the FP stops are too loose and will let the extractor clock. For the life of me I don't know why every company doesn't buy the rights to produce an AFTEC extractor and most all of this crap would go away. But, they would probably fit the FP stop wrong and the AFTEC cannot work unless that is right. Sorry about the rambling.

I guess my question to you about the tight guns not running is this. Why is it that the guns with the best reputation for 100% reliability like Baer, Brown, Night Hawk are by far the tightest in slide to frame and barrel to slide fit and the factory rattle traps have most all the problems? Notice I did not put Wilson in there with the dependable ones. That company lost my respect 10 years ago but I still like their mags.
-
You missed the point. The bells and whistles eat up your profit margin and therefore you skimp on the hands on tuning of the gun that is a must. So you get guns that need to go back for tweeking.
-
The problem is that with factory 1911's the design calls for more hands on attention than a gun that was designed for modern manufacturing. Plus all the manufacturers are trying to hang all the bells and whistles on the gun and still come out around a thousand dollars. That is a tall order and they do amazingly well, but too many times the ball is dropped. Extractor tension wrong, barrel timing wrong, etc....etc...Probably 85% to 90% run great but as with all things, the bad 10% is the squeaky wheel and gets all the attention. When they are right though, you will not find a more dependable gun.

If you are going 9mm or 40 then I would definitely go STI. But if you are going 45 I think that all they do are ramped barrels. I am not a fan of ramped barrels in anything but 9mm 40 or 38 super. I would urge you to go elsewhere in 45 for sure.

Oh and David was shooting a box stock Kimber (not top shelf for sure). And yes it might have been his reloaded rounds. I'm sure he did not chamber check them as he never shoots that gun seriously. He is an open and Limited shooter mainly.
-
Dude, I did not have a single malfuntion at that match or any match with that gun ever. Trust me I would remember. What I had was a round pop out of the top of my mag during a reload but that was operator error. You see if you get the mag too far forward during a reload it can hit the front of the well and strip that round off. Basically I missed the hole to far forward.

I have 5 custom built 1911's of which none can you wiggle the slide to frame fit, and with the slide off you cannot wiggle the barrel when in the lugs. I can run any of these guns 2-3 thousand rounds between cleanings with zero problems. And I do regularly since 4 out of the 5 are guns I use in competition. When I shot with you all (IDPA) I saw nothing but factory 1911s. I saw some Kimbers, Springers, etc......, but the only top shelf guns I saw was the Baer you mentioned and the one that was on my hip. And the only malfunction I saw that day was from an M&P (might have been an XD, but it was plastic for sure). Also, you need to remember you have no idea what folks are trying to feed them in the way of reloads. Plus you have a ton of tinkerers out there too that don't hesitate to work on their own guns even though they have no business doing so. All I can say is, that if I thought for one second that running a glock or the like in USPSA competition would in the slightest way give me an advantage I would be shooting them in a heart beat. But I have guns with over 20k without a malfunction that will shoot under an inch at 25 yards and will run and run as dirty as you please.
