Bought 3 old .22 rifles in an estate sale this weekend and was wondering about the age / date of manufacturer of each one is a Remington 550-1 no ser # but marked ww ones a Savage 187-j no visible ser # or markings ones a Savage/Springfield 120 ser # R072455 I've researched the Remington and think it was made Aug 1928 ( from the ww markings ) but have had no luck with the dating the 2 Savage's .... Anyone know any place I could find out about them ? I've wiped the stocks down with orange cleaner to remove the surface dirt /grime they're clean now with all the old patena and wear spots left intact... they have too much history to ruin them by refinishing the stocks l Oiled all the mechanisms thoroughly and wiped them dry Have only fired long rifles thru them so far, but they all seem to work well may try some shorts this weekend

this weekend, someone suggested using an old non working freezer/refrigerator ..... door seals out moisture and some freezer models are lockable ..... any thoughts on this idea?

I'm going with the ammo cans inside the cabinet .... read another interesting tidbit about someone oiling the seals of the cans and leaving the cans to warm in the sun .... bring them in after they get good and hot. fill with ammo aqnd desc and shut them up .... storage in a cool dry place .... the cooling actions will almost vaccumm seal the can lids .... not sure if this really works but thought I'd give it a try

the military ammo cans are an option ... I was trying to keep everything together and handy and still have it to where someone could not just pick it up and walk away with it all too easily.

no musty smell .... moisture not a problem is a garage that has been enclosed . Average temperature swing is about that of night/day outside . I thought the cabinet idea would work ok .... the ones I've been looking at are plenty big but would fit atop the safe and not take up any extra floor space. also are lockable.

Up till now, I've been able to store all my ammo along with my guns in my gun safe. But the pile is growing and I need some ideas as to where it can overflow to. It's a variety of stuff shotgun shells in various gauges ( 10 to 410 ) in different shot sizes. 45 Long Colts, 357s, 38 sp., 22's, 30-30s,etc. maybe 2k or so not much turnover .... some I've had for years. some are paper shells, some 45s round balls from WW2 Was thinking of putting one of those lockable tool cabinets ( double door types ) on top of my safe but was concerned about heat/humidity since they're not airtight. The room whre the safe is not temp. controlled and does not get extremely hot/cold or damp. Will desc pacs work efficiently even though it's a sealed container? Any thoughts on a cabinet like this on top of the safe?

I'm not going to pursue this avenue of home based FFL .... have a pretty good relationship with the local gun dealer .... have done several transactions with him he's down to $25 each transaction for me now .... may go lower as time goes on have less than 5 years to go for full retirement benifits from the postal service may try and see about helping out at his shop on Saturdays and such till I retire maybe get my license there??? .... (he runs an ATV repair / gun and ammo sales business

Sounds like this is not such a good idea .... I will not circumvent any laws just to save a few bucks. Will continue to shop for guns online and deal thru my local gunshop . I was just inquiring if it was possible . thanks

I've been kicking around the idea of getting an FFL for some time now. Just for my own use ( to purchase ) and save money spent on using an independent FFL to ship/handle/transfer my online purchases ... I know there are lots of restrictions and it's almost impossible to obtain for home based FFL operators. I've researched the internet nad have come to the conclusion that most of the FFL " kits " offered are scams to get your money . I've also read that getting a Gunsmith certificate thru an accredited school would help immensely in getting the type of FFL I want.. Does anyone have any experience in this matter? Is the basic Gunsmith certification the right way to begin ? If so, what schools ( online ) would you reccomend ? Any feedback will be appreciated. Like I said in the beginning, this would only be for my personal use to further my collection of firearms. No relling or obtaining guns for anyone else.
