  1. I think the Shield and 43 are both great guns.  The only real difference, imho, is the grip.  The 43 is very small versus the Shield - not in height or width, but in the depth of the grip.  Everyone I come across with medium to larger hands seems to prefer the grip of the Shield, whilr the smaller hands prefer the 43.  Both are excellent shooters.  For some reason you have to pay an extra $100 or so for a 43, but I see no added benefit for the extra cost.  I don't feel like either one is "better" than the other.  You just have to pay more if you like a smaller grip.  :-D

  2. As for those thinking about a 30-30, whaddya think about a lever 357?  More capacity, and can get darn close to 30-30 power with the right 357 load.  Easy to reload for, and can scrounge both 38 and 357 ammo when you come across it.

Personally, I'd be picking a semi auto with capacity, most like any AR variant in 556 or 308, but I do like my Marlin 1894 in 357, too.

  3. I'm a 9 man when it comes to small guns.  Spending a lot more money on much weaker ammo (380) never appealed to me.  The only 380 that makes sense to me is the the KelTec or similar size supermicro pistols.  When it comes to the larger 380s, I just don't see why a person wouldn't finish the leap and get a Shield/43/XDS, etc. :/  (Full disclosure, I carry a Shield 9)

I would say 938, if it weren't for all the bad reports as of late.

  4. Just figured I'd post an update again.  I'm super happy with the hay bale method so far!  Stuff is pretty much just exploding out of these plants now.

I didn't think to take any pictures of the garden area overall, maybe next time.  I was having too much fun watching the bees at work!

  5. I doubt a gunsmith would fix his gun for free. :/

The one time I needed Smith to replace a firing pin on an 18 year old revolver I got 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th, or 5th, or...) hand they paid shipping both ways and I had it back in under two weeks.

I called in a couple months ago because my first M&P (now almost 5 years old with thousands of rounds through it) had a recoil spring that was getting tired, and it wasn't always chambering the first round when dropping the slide on a fresh mag.  While talking to the rep I told him about the other M&Ps I had, etc.  I ended up getting 4 recoil springs and 2 mags springs sent to me for free.  Very happy with every interaction with them.

Sorry you've experienced differently with Sig.  Have you tried just calling back and talking to a different rep?

  6. I don't have one, but a Steyr is on my short list.  I have shot two so far and loved both of them.  They fit me wonderfully and I shot them very well. The sights are definitely different, but thankfully for me it was a non-issue.  I can absolutely see how they're a pain in the butt, though.

I've gotta get an M9-A1 and a 1911 out of the way first, then I'll probably hit Buds up for a full size 9mm Steyr.

Let us know what you find!

Last time I saw one locally was a used one, and that was a couple years ago. :/

  7. I have a friend who is wanting to have a front sight installed into their (deceased) great grandfather's military issue Colt 45.  It's obviously standard GI.  Rear sight is there, but the front is missing... just an empty notch.

Any recommendations?  Wanting to keep it close to smyrna/murfreesboro, and not a hack who will ruin their family heirloom.  Thanks!

  8. It was the pilot.  :-(  Not that any loss of life is better than another, but still sad.  Brave and selfless man to make sure only he bore the cost of whatever happened with the plane.  Prayers to his friends, family, and the Blue Angel family.

  9. Too late to do any good, but good choice on the infinitys.  I used quite a bit of the reference series stuff a decade ago when I wad running a kilowatt or so in car audio.  Good value, great thumpage.

  10. Those shims work, but I don't like them.  They can slip off the terminal as well.  In cases like this, I would (and have) spent a few bucks and 15 minutes to buy a nice set of heavy duty and properly fitting terminals and just swap them out.

  11. I think the extended coverage and top are both good gestures.  One extends their cost liability for future problems, and the top is definitely a good step at also reimbursing some value to to you for the time you've lost with your vehicle and the frustration you've gone through.

I don't expect companies to go through astronomical/disproportional expense whenever something is mishandled.  This seems like a good compromise.  Glad you didn't give up!

Don't take this the wrong way, but I find that kinda sad.

I'm with you. I just don't share the "collector" mentality for these ProTechs.  I view them as probably the best for quality and design, but not museum pieces.  These are some of the best "work" knives a person can buy.  Now, when we start talking about ivory handled diamond encrusted one-offs, that's a different story.  Those are $1,500 and up simply for show.

I have carried every TGO knife at least a few times.  The Godfather (and Godson, whenever that happens) are the closest thing to safe queens I have, and mainly because I find the blade style impractical for my everyday uses. (And I always end up poking a few holes in myself with that pointy tip whenever I try to use it, haha!)

I love the Magic, but it just doesn't feel as robust as the TR4 or Rockeye.  If I hadn't lost my Rockeye, it might still be my EDC.  That thing fit me better than anything else I've ever held.  I keep putting it off, but someday I'll buy another.

  13. Do some reading on it first, the bales need some prep and a few weeks' time before they are ready for plants.  If you get them and plant immediately, the plants will burn to death in a couple weeks during a heat spike as the bales go through a stage of internal decomposition.

Also, hay/straw provides little to no nutrient, so fertilizer and amendments must be added regularly.  If I had a good yard/soil I wouldn't have tried this.  However, it seems to be working out very well so far.

Here's a good link to start

  14. I wish I could get away with holsters like that.  I have what doctors like to call "a little bit of a weight problem" and exposed sights dig into my jelly roll sumthin' fierce.  My holsters have to completely cover the inside face of the gun. :/
