PUTNAM COUNTY — A resolution to not allow guns in Putnam County parks, including the fairgrounds, will be presented to the full commission Monday after a lengthy discussion on the matter last night.

However, one commissioner is worried about consistency with other towns in the county.

“We have to opt out or support by Sept. 1,†Johnnie Wheeler, 5th District commissioner, said in her presentation to the committee.

Michael Medley, 7th District commissioner, voted to support the resolution and send it to the full commission.

Larry Epps, 1st District commissioner, voiced his concerns with it.

“I’ve spent quite a bit of time at the city work session today and there are some items to consider,†he said. “When this item came up... there’s the potential for a lot of incongrous, inconsistency within the county. What I mean by that is that you can have each entity involved in our county opt in or opt out. In essence, we could have a situation within the county where one entity that chooses to carry guns and one that chooses not to. This inconsistency could present, I think, some terrible situations. I was hoping we could somehow try to get some consistency within the county. I would ask the commission to consider is to get an intergovernmental committee together with the city...all the representatives of Baxter, Monterey and Algood and see if this committee can come up with a recommendation to get us all on the same page.â€

Commissioner Jim Martin agreed, saying that this would be a beneficial process while commissioner Dale Moss believes it may be an infringement on the Second Amendment.

“Do you stop here or are you going to take the right to carry guns away all together?†Moss asked.

County Executive Kim Blaylock assured him that the county can only enforce what the statute allows them to do.

Ron Chaffin with the fair board expressed concerns with it, saying that this doesn’t involve the concealed weapons law.

“I’m not against gun-permit carrying people,†he said. “I’m concerned with (the fact that) you don’t have to conceal your weapon when you go into the gates of a park. What’s to keep somebody from running up behind them and taking it out and shooting people? That’s what we’re giving them the right to do. I’m concerned about the people that are going to be around those who don’t have a gun permit.â€

The resolution will go before the full commission Monday at 6 p.m.

It seems to think they are very good at listening to reason, but he (I) needs FACTUAL info to spread around. Thing is I said I'd help him out,(he'd really be helping us) BUT gotta get it TONIGHT, and TOMORROW!! Going to take a weekend trip to Pigeon Forge and won't see him again till the day of their meeting!!

He says he has only been approached by a few people and they have no problem with park carry, but he needs something to back up what we say.

As it stands now, the county is looking to follow the lead of the city of Cookeville (opt out) as they are not well informed.

Going to CCP Appeal to get numbers of permit holders, but need ANY FACTUAL INFO I CAN GET MY HANDS ON... QUICK (percentage of permit holders convicted with a crime, etc..)as well as some REAL GOOD arguing points for the cause(short)..

HELP!!!

Thanks in Advance:D
