Ka-Bar Becker Combat Utility - an Unintentional Review
DRM replied to DRM's topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
I will give it that - this knife is built like a tank! -
So a friend of mine calls me the other day and says "hey, your new knife will be here in a few days". Uhhh... my new knife? "Yeah, I ordered us both some new knives." Uhhh... thanks? So it gets here, and evidently this is what I purchased: Ka-Bar Becker Combat Utility Knife. Came with a sheath the length of a yard stick, and had another little knife stored in there too. I figure since I didn't really *want* this (as in, I didn't think I like it it *then* buy it), it's the perfect opportunity to give an honest review. So over the next week or so, I'll post up some pics, my general impression, and try to beat the snot out of it. Since I did actually pay for it (great friend, right? ) I won't totally try to destroy it, but I will go ahead and use it and abuse it as a "combat utility" knife - IMHO - should be used and abused. To start off, specs from Ka-Bar's website: https://www.kabar.com/product/productDetail.do?productNumber=BK7&mode=category&categoryId=1,2,3,7&categoryName=Military/Tactical

The owner stated that *here*, I don't see any mention that the young lady was informed of that at the time of her experience. Good offers aren't good if they were never offered
-
You seem to have a reading comprehension problem. Let me know when you figure out what I actually said, or if you can't figure it out, I'll be glad to diagram the sentence referring to Jennings handguns for you.
-
Dave, when you figure out how not to be condescending (throughout this thread, actually), I might try taking your advice seriously. BTW, this makes two threads where you've maid claims, been called on them - and can't seem to back them up with facts. I'm starting to see a trend. As I said - thanks to those who know how to listen, instead of just barging into a thread and acting like they have all the answers. That's how ideas get exchanged and change takes place
-
Yes' date=' 100% of the time. I don't feel comfortable judging others based on a pretty arbitrary definition of "cheap", and or "POS"... do you? Higher price doesn't necessarily mean better. There is always something better and/or more expensive out there, which means YOUR cheaper/less good gun could be considers "POS" and "cheap". Buying a $2k 1911 doesn't make you a gun snob, but looking down your nose at everything else does. The internet seems to be a haven for "experts" about things they've never touched, owned, or used (how many "Jennings are junk" comments do you see form people who have likely never even seen one in person).

Thanks, Drewsett for seeing through the mess and getting the point. I sure don't have the answers, and am open to suggestions, but it's frustrating to bring this topic up only to have to deal with - as you put so well - "party of no" type attitudes. It;s disappointing that a more realistic exchange of ideas can't be had here - but perhaps that is my fault for starting this in the off topic forum, and not in one of the more structured areas that seem to have a better atmosphere for discussion. Maybe "OC day" isn't the best solution. The more I think about it, the better way is to ease into this with something like a button or ribbon campaign, nation wide, one set day per year. This allows people to still carry their preferred method - open or concealed - and the button lets people know we're all LEGAL gun owners and carriers, and we are just living our lives normally - just like everyone else. A button or ribbon makes "us" as a collective armed group visible, but not "in your face". I think this serves to get the point out - while mitigating some of the negatives a pure OC type event might. Regardless, I think the way is to start educating away the irrational fear many people have concerning guns. It won't be easy, or fast - but I can guarantee the anti's will be educating people towards *their* view, and that combined with ignorance and apathy puts us in a losing position.
-
I'd be interested in finding out what this "similar track record" is, exactly.
-
And this is the kind of ignorance that makes a discussion almost impossible. Did you even read the thread, or do you just want to try and be one of the cool kids?
-
Good thing nobody suggested that. Good thing nobody suggested this was about "news coverage".
-
Actually, you made specific claims about "my plan", which I am asking you to back up. And let's be clear - I'm the one asking for opinions and the open sharing of ideas, you're the one trying to tell me you have it all figured out already.
-
I guess actually supporting your claims is a foreign concept lately here on TGO... If you can't back up what you say - just admit it, nit don't insult by trying to act like that falls on anyone's shoulders but yours.
-
Like I asked the other pessimist - what idea of mine wasn't "thought out"? What exactly is the "this" that has been suggested before? The only results I see that are the same are defeatists shooting down the ideas before anything actually happens. Were there mass riots in public? Did people get shot? Were people *not* informed when the encountered someone carrying during their daily walk of life? Am I supposed to be insulted because you are calling these ideas bad? So far - I've seen no facts as to why this is a bad idea, just opinions. Where are the facts to support your position?
-
Care to explain what "my plan" is exactly, and show me where "my plan" has been tried before, and failed?
-
Yeah, I'm pretty sure you did know that. Top 20 Logical Fallacies - The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe - Check out "Argument from Authority". I always have to laugh when people claim to be the expert - but don't have the time to explain it, or that the other party can't "understand". If you can't answer the question - just say so. Then again - you didn't even pay enough attention to the thread to know were were talking about an assembled lower with stock when you chimed in, so I guess you're pretty much running par for the course If you change your mind and feel like educating us simple folk - make sure you include some drawings. I like drawings, especially in crayon!

So what's on your list? I really want to kill a bobcat, and a coyote. Been bird hunting for years and only recently got into deer hunting, which got me exposed to the other critters that tend to roam around. Haven't seen one yet while I was out for deer - but I just have this strange desire to kill a bobcat and a coyote. I talked to a friend who mentioned he wanted to try one year to hunt/trap at least one of every species on the TN legal season list So how about you? Maybe use this for each of us to set a person goal to kill a __________________ this upcoming season

Someone tell me I'm not the only one who read that... in character... with the voice
-
I sure am glad you've got this all figured out for us! Clearly, we should just give up.
-
Why do you tell me I can't do something, then agree with me that I can (by way of getting laws changed)? Where did I say anything about it not being a state right? I was stating that it is you who has lowered your expectations - as you can see, I'm perfectly happy to keep my expectations up high where they are. And as I work (in whatever ways I can) to get you more rights than you think you can have, or deserve - I'll be ok with that too. BTW, this isn't about me not "knowing what my rights are". This is about some people giving up on their rights and settling for the settling for the privileges they *let* them have. I sure am glad I don't have the pessimistic "can't do" attitude some of you seem to have... Willing to settle, willing to throw other people under the bus that share the same goals as you but you disagree with their ideas, willing to give up rights and *maybe* be given back privileges if you don't rock the boat, etc... I just can't see it that way, sorry!

Actually, what you asked was more of a cost/value question, with the assumption that at the same cost - aluminum is the better choice. Since you gave credentials - do you think aluminum is necessarily better? If you have knowledge of metallurgy and plastic injection molding, then it seems to me that you'd be aware making blanket statements about aluminum being better that plastic make a whole lot of assumptions about what aluminum was used, what plastic was used, the forging or machining process, actual part design and tolerances, final use loading and stresses of the part in question, and any number of other variables. Granted, I'm no machinist, or expert - but it seems to me saying "aluminum i s better than plastic" just isn't so cut and dried. Why wouldn't you feel comfortable? Ive seen first hand reports from someone who has been using one of these lowers with his .50 BMG - he is perfectly satisfied so far. My own admittedly limited reading and handling of the AR platform so far leads me to believe the lower is simply not seeing huge loads or stresses. An aluminum Kroger bag might be stronger than a plastic one, but if the plastic one gets the job done - especially at a lower price point - I don't have a problem with it. Anyway - I'm still looking around and trying to decide what upper I want to put on mine. Decisions, decisions!

Myself and a friend are currently planning one of our own. We might round up 1-2 more friends if we can talk them into it, but to be honest - part of my goals are to keep it small and more of an individual thing to really test/hone individual skill sets. Id be more interested in "expert" advice on setting supply ground rules (especially for a first-timer), structuring how long when starting out, etc.
-
I guess that's where we disagree. I think it is about rights, and I'm not satisfied that the best we can do is what hey TELL us we can do (aka - privilege). If you've set your expectations that low, I can respect that, but I just cant bring myself to agreeing with it. Do you happen to have comparative stats to show where OC people have been targeted more, or suffered actual tactical disadvantage? In a political sense - the opposition are happy to have you give up and compromise their direction... the giggle gleefully at how easy it was to swing the battle in their favor. You can carry a gun because they let you. What there is to gain is shifting that to carrying a gun because they have no grounds to stop you. I am simply exploring ways to bring about that shift.

Which is why I really don't think a "rally" or any other gathering is the proper approach. Limited exposure, limited attendance, etc. It really has to be spread out, and people doing nothing out of the ordinary for the impact really hit the main point. Something like the button/ribbon/pin day gives you that "in" to discuss with others about the topic by drawing them into the the discussion.
-
I thought some more last night, and maybe a better approach would be a national "go armed" day. Maybe shift the focus from OC/CC, and shift the focus to going armed. Maybe a less "in your face" approach would be a large button or pin or ribbon that says something like "Armed and Safe". OC or CC, on that day everyone wears that button and is prepared to help educate those who ask about it. I think that would still meet the goal of education, while broadening the impact by including more people. People would still see that those button wearing "Armed and Safe" people are just normal people, going about their normal daily lives... Armed, and safe. Thoughts on that? Again, the goal here is to educate and inform - I'm not dead set on "OC" as the only way to do it.
-
Don't insult me by comparing what I suggested to that. It's dishonest on your part and you know it. It is well meaning people like you who - IMHO - are the reason we are losing our gun rights. You think compromising and "working with" the anti's is the correct path - but it's not. THEY are not compromising, THEY are pushing 100% for their views 100% of the time. The 2A started out simple enough - how has that compromise thing worked out ever since that was penned? *Most* people are indifferent about guns - Guns never cross their mind on a day to day basis. Most people are also uneducated and lack exposure to guns - which means many of them *can* be reached by education and exposure. Remove the fear of the unknown. Please don't misrepresent what I said. What I said is the anti's love seeing us cower in fear. They love knowing we have a legal right to do something - but many are scared to do so. The anti's also love the infighting among gun owners where CC proponents like to chide and belittle people who simply want to exercise their right to OC.
