Another fine pistol you might consider is another JMB design. The Browning Hi-Power in .40.
I had a nice 9mm HP, until some jerkwad decided my house looked especially vulnerable and decided to come through the back door. Sadly I wasn't home or would have been an especially bad day for him.
In addition to the HP, I lost a Norinco .45 and a .22mag Colt Peacemaker along with the Pistol Security Cabinet they were in.

I've had a couple over the years. They are reliable rifles and decent shooters. Their kinda plain jane though and not very exciting. I had a lot more fun shooting ARs and M1As.
Ruger is pretty proud of their magazines too. Accessories seem cheaper for ARs. But that's just me.
Personally, I like the SKS better and they are about $300 cheaper. That can buy alot of ammo.

Cause its a wheel gun ? and the rounds power has been surpassed by the 9mm+p+ and the .40 and the 10mm and the .45+p and did I say its a wheel gun.
You know the nice thing about a wheel gun? They never break or lose their magazines and they have no safeties to fool with. Lose the magazine and the best 17 round uber auto becomes a single shoot. Wheel guns may not be sexy, but they are darn near always reliable!

I use 158gr Federal Nyclads in my Colt Agent. I also have used 125gr Hydro-shoks. Both are accurate rounds for my Agent. As a matter of fact the guy I bought it from recommended the Nyclads. He said they were the most accurate round for my particular gun. I've not proved him wrong yet. That's whats in my speedloaders now. I understand that Federal doesn't make them anymore though.
I'll probably try something else or just go back to the Hydro-shoks.
I practice with whatever is cheap though.

There is only 3 oz. difference in the weight between the Sig and the DW. I really like the looks off the DW, but I am slightly prejudiced.

Going mobile on foot with 1000 rounds of 7.62x.39 would about leave me weight for a pocket knife or something. I'd have to agree if you were going long term mobile a .22 would be one of the best choices.
If you could take a vehicle that would change things, but gas and murphy's law you might not get far. So still best to have a good .22. Just best to have a .22 anyway, anything else would be gravy. You can probably get a good used .22 with a decent scope, 1000 rounds and a cleaning kit for under $300.
If the SHTF I think it would be necessary to have several different knives also. A good Swiss Army, good machete, and another good strong knife like a Bowie.
As I have read before it totally depends on how "SHTF" as to what would serve best, local, regional, national, global. Natural disaster, invading army, food shortage, gas shortage, riots?
I came across this site a couple of months ago when I was looking for a good machete to purchase. I ended up purchaing a Cold Steel Kopis Machete. Any way I found this site. You all might be interested in checking it out. http://www.usrsog.org/index.htm You might want to go read their Survival Firearm section. It made a lot of sense, especially the last paragraph. Read the BLADES section as well. They also have a pretty good check list for a Bug Out Kit.
I make no claim to knowing anything about this outfit, but I did enjoy the articles they have posted.

For survival nothing is going to beat a Ruger 10/22...then AK... or SKS or AR15...
Remember if all hell breaks loose you may have to be mobile and you will need to be able to pick up ammo, there should be pleanty of 22's or 223 laying around.

Good point! You know, back in the day when they used to hunt black bear up in the smokeys with dogs (before the feds stepped in and made it park), a lot of the bear were killed with .22 rifles after they were treed by the dogs. Many a man has been killed by the lowly .22 as well. A good .22 does have it's place.
A brick of .22 doesn't weight a whole lot either, maybe 4 or 5 pounds. What's 500 rounds of .223 or 7.62x39 weight? 20 or 30 pounds?
I think a Ruger 10/22 with Taurus .22 revolver (9 shot) or a 10 shot automatic pistol (pick your favorite brand) could be a viable combination, though I'd probably carry something a bit bigger for a primary pistol.
One thing I've always thought about in a SHTF situation is that I'm not going to be looking to primarily fight my way out. That would really be the last thing I'd want to do. I'd want to sneak around. If your sneaking, your chances of living are a bit better than if your fighting. I'm not sure a 500 yard rifle is a necessity. If I'm that far away, especially in East Tennessee, I might as well be a 100 miles away.

The middle one I assume is Chinese (but we know what happens when we assume) and I figure one of them might be a russian. Regardless they are beauties though!!!I love old rifles! I love the history that goes with then as well!

I like the M1 Carbine. It's a good design.
If I were to go that route, I'd be real tempted to pick up a Ruger Blackhawk single action in .30 carbine as well. That way I'd only have to carry one type of ammo. Seems like the old AMT Company also made an semi-automatic pistol in .30. It might have been a Javalina. Sadly, my mind isn't all it should be after 44 years of living. The one problem with a M1 though, is availablity of cheap ammo. 223 and 7.62x39 are half the cost of .30 carbine. I think currently commie ammo is much cheaper than anything else.

I agree with most everything that's been said here. The SKS makes the most sense in my opinion though. You can get a SKS for around $200. That leaves plenty of money to purchase two or three tins of 7.62x39 to put away and another one to shoot. Plus there are all kinds of accessories you can add on to them.
Another rifle I'll throw out there is the Little KELTEC SU-16C. It's a pretty neat little .223 rifle that accepts AR mags at a little over half the cost.

For a cheap bolt gun, I might consider an Mosin Nagent. You can pick those up for around a $100. Yeah I know their old, but most of the ones being imported into the country seem to be very reliable and accurate. Ammo is cheap for them too. A lot of the M44s look to be in excellent condition. It's hard to beat the price on one.
I'd also consider a 30/30 lever gun. Ammo is plentiful and as someone else pointed out, they aren't very scary looking.

It's one of the best shooting .45s I've ever had. That's much improved from the mid 90's. A friend of mine had one and it shot consistantly a foot low. Pissed him off royally, since I had a Norinco that shot rings around his SA.
SA put a new front sight on it, but that only took out about 4 inches. He traded it for a Sig and never looked back.That Norinco was a sweet shooting pistol too. All I did to it was put some Wolf springs and a solid rod in it. I think I had all of $275 in it. Sadly it got stolen in a break in almost two years ago, along with a Browning Hi-Power and a Colt .22 Peacemaker.

Nice pistol! I have one as well. Bought it off a co-worker so he could buy another co-worker's black stainless still national match. Got a good deal too, $550! Love mine to death! Sleep with it every night. My wife claims it's coming between her and me!

Hi guys! First time post.
I also have to admit that I lovesnubbies!
I've had a little snub for a while and I don't think you can beat'em! Mines from that other true American maker, the one that starts with a "C". It's a little blue Colt Agent with old school Tyler "T" finger grip and it's one of the best shooting little revolvers I've ever had the pleasure to fire! It especially likes 158gr. nyclads. Fits nice in the pocket of jacket.
In the past I've had several others including a S&W 36 and a bodyguard, two SP101s in both .38 and .357 (their a bit on the heavy side though for pocket carry, but I love the grips. I've had the Rossi mbl 88 and I've also had a Sig P230. I hated that gun. Two clips at the range and my hand hurt and it was .380! Go figure and I shoot a .45 Springfield regularily! But this little Colt is my favorite.

I carry a Colt .38 spl Agent when I feel the need to carry. If I feel the need to carry something larger, then common sense tells me I probably don't need to be where ever it is I'm going.
Federal Nyclads are dead on in this revolver so that's what's in it along with two HKS speed loaders. If I'm wearing a jacket then it's in the right front pocket and if I'm not then it's tucked in a Uncle Mike's IWB holster. If I'm in kakhis, I just stick it in the front pocket.
The main reason I carry this one is because it's first of all LIGHT. Second it's very ACCURATE. Third it's DEPENDABLE. Things that I like in a pistol.
