  1. Well my DNZ mount came in for a 10/22 project I have been working on.  I was so impressed with it, I went ahead and ordered a Medium height mount for the 700.  I'll put some pics up when it comes in.
  2. 6BR was the other main consideration.  Specifically the Savage F Class. Thanks for your input.  Do you shoot around here (Mid TN) anywhere?
  3. When you say short range, what distance do you see results start to diminish?  I'd like to build I light recoil, decent range capable bolt, but if it's sketchy beyond 500 or so I may look elsewhere cartridge whys.
  4. So far I like it.  Its not much longer than stock but just enough longer that grabbing it with a scope on the gun isnt a chore.  I can tell you it is much much smoother than the stock pull.  It also came with three spings... Subsonic, Standard Velocity, and High Velocity.  I put the subsonic in this gun, and have the standard in another.  So far both cycle just fine with either type of ammo, No ftf, fte, or ftl with either yet with any ammo.....using Tactical Innovations mags, Butler Creek metal lips,  or BX25's yet.
  5. I suggest getting a Chamber length gauge and finding the distance to your lands.  From there you can ladder load with a few different lengths so you can find your "sweet length" for you gun.  You can also try a few of these accuracy tips/ tricks. And visit accurate shooter dot com for lots of handy info on your cartridge.   Debur flasholes Neck size fire formed brass instead of full length sizing...this made a large difference for me Weigh your brass and sort Weigh your projectiles and sort Try bench rest primers...doesnt make a big difference for me in 308 or 30-06 Get a chrony and see what your spread is on speeds.   Theres lots of other little things, but if your on a budget I would start with the flash holes and weights.  You could try firing from a sand bag front and back as well to take out some inconsistencies instead of a bipod.  I shoot from bipods as well, but i work my loads up on sand bags and a heavy rest out front.   Regardless you got some decent looking groups there.
  6. Im thinking two piece so I can single load a bit easier.
  7. Gorgeous!  I've been thinking of a build in 6 PPC.  Any experience with that chambering?
  8. I have a rail on top of the gun now but I want to change it out for a mount that takes advantage of the predrilled receiver so I have a lil more access for tossing in single rounds at the range.  The rail blocks a good portion of this area even though it is milled out there.  Right now I have Nikon 223 BDC 600 Scope on it and besides it being up to high the M223 scope mount looks a little too tacticool and I have no fore and aft adjustment due to the way the rail is slotted.   Whats out there that y'all have decent experience with?
  9. Well I settled on a scope and DNZ one piece mount.  I got the Eradicator from Mueller.  Looks pretty good but I'm not supposed to " know " about it till after my son "gives" it to me for my birthday. I'll pics once I re-open the package and mount it.  Finally get to shoot it soon.....cant wait!
  10. I go there regularly for work...not fun...not safe.
  11. I read all about the MVP and decided I was going to go that route for a 223 bolt.  Then I couldnt find one and a buddy of mine got a 223 Rem 700 bull barrel stainless fluted, yada yada from Buds for 700 bucks.  I helped him with getting the reloads down and watched him shoot his best group ever with it.  I ended up getting the exact same rifle.  I havent put alot of bench time behind it, maybe 250-300 rounds or so.  But so far I am happy.  SO.....recently at one gunshop around here and the same day at a gunshow I get to actually see and handle the MVP.  SO glad I went with the Rem.  The MVP bolt was real sloppy and I can see the split bolt face being an issue for sure.  It definitely was cool that it took the AR mags but I think Mossberg could have done a much better job with it.  The gun photos real well, but in person the machine work wasnt all that impressive.   :2cents:   That said I would still like a bolt that took AR mags...I'd be in prairie dog heaven.
  12.   The Mueller APV and APT are very popular on high end 10/22 builds from what I have read/seen. I want just a little more magnification so I can work on my breathing, trigger pull, and wobble zone.  The extra zoom really amplifies imperfections in my technique, and I figure it would be a useful learning tool.  One of the reasons I wanted something like this is for low dollar practice for my larger guns.  The 22 lr round is also more susceptible  wind and drop, so I hope it will help me in that for my longer range centerfire goals.  I have already doped the scope caps on my other 10/22 and can dial any distance out to 250 yards for specific rounds like nothing and bust a skeet.  I plan on doing a more professional job of that more this rifle.     Long story short, you should really check out and read up on the APV.  Side note....the other scope I use is the BSA Sweet 22.   Its not the best but with a little tinkering it is pretty useful.         Until I find something more convenient outdoors I shoot at Terry Waldens place in Manchester  (which unfortunately has a 2 deg drop).  Indoors I shoot at OnTarget a couple times a week for pistol.  I am looking for a 1000 yard range to try some stuff with my 30-06 and .223 bolt guns.  Not that I think I can shoot that far (yet), but I would like to see what my groupings are at 600.  I can keep 3 shots in 1" consistently with my 22-250 and 223 at 200 yards with my handloads.  It took me a while to get there and I think it would be fun to see what the loads do out farther.  Im looking forward to warmer weather with less wind so I can print some paper at 300 at Terrys place though..
  13. Well with my other (lightweight version) i could easily keep em inside an inch at 50 yards, But the TacSol barrel is so light it was hard to hols still. I have a few 22 bolt guns, and my Savage TRRSR will keep them in just about an inch at 100! Using Wolf MT and no wind. I have a 20 moa rail on that one and we shoot it out to 300 yards. Groups at 300 are about 12-15". Point is if I can get even close to that with this semi I will be a very happy camper. Once I get a scope on it, or rob one from something else I will definitely post results. I have used a bunch of bull barrels in the past and I have heard great things about the Kidd barrels. At 300 bucks it better perform! The trigger is set at 8oz/8oz, the bolt is properly headspaced, so it should all pan out in decent weather. The only stock part of this gun is the receiver, which I have obviously cleaned up. However I could have used a after market receiver. I didnt because this was literally my first firearm, and the nostalgia in me wanted to keep the orig receiver. It's had god knows how many round through it, but it has always been an accurate little gun. I will likely bed it eventually, but want to see what the accuracy progression is first. I have a WIDE variety of 22 ammo to try through it, but I suspect the Wolf MT will shine, along with Wolf ME, and CCI Target. These have always done very well for me in the past. For faster stuff the M22 has done surprisingly well for me out of my bolts guns. Here are the results of some of my bolt gun 100 yard tests.
  14. None yet, thinking of a Mueller Eradicator in Silver....what are your thoughts?   I was thinking of using the DNZ Game Getter one piece mount, but they dont offer a 20 moa version....trying to sort that out before i hit the buy button on the scope.
  15. I've always been a fan of the good ol Ruger 10/22 platform and I have owned many, all of which end up getting modified. I always dreamed of building a "accurate as it can be" target version, and a super light field version. Well... I emptied the coin jars in Coinstar the other day, claimed my Amazon money (almost 800 bucks!) and went shopping. The bits n pieces promptly arrived from Tony at Kidd Innovative Design, and here's what I ended up with. I already had some of the goodies, but I added the stock, barrel, bolt, charging handle. The Kidd two stage trigger was in my other lightweight field plinker, and I did a trigger job on that and moved it over to this one. What do you all think? The old bolt that I modified: A variety of springs for different velocities:
  16. Im so glad I dont live there anymore!
  17. To me cleaning is a must.  Like you said it makes it easier to detect issues, but it also keeps your dies from undue wear.  I'm with you on the number of reloads and I feel like the primer pockets start to get loose before the brass is no good.  Of course I typically only load light practice rounds, and some hot loads could certainly change that lifespan.  The one area I do skimp on if any is trimming depending on the cartridge type.
  18. Same story here....great guy..but its really hard to actually buy something from him.   We agreed on a trade and I actually got extra mags for the gun he was getting, another 200 bucks I didn't need to spend or invest in a gun I was selling.  After that we could never connect.  I ended up selling it outright to someone else for more money anyway.  It's a shame, he is a great person and I still want to buy from him, but I'm not going to beg him to take my money either.
  19. Here are a bunch more pics of the proof marks and engraving.  Thanks for all of the input guys!  Maybe with these proof marks I can get a better idea of the age?   http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/100_2159_zps5017b76f.jpg http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/100_2158_zps1ead744a.jpg http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/100_2157_zps86c9d14d.jpg http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/100_2155_zps5e3fc739.jpg http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/100_2154_zps0c29ce48.jpg http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/100_2153_zps7aa9bc80.jpg http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/100_2152_zps73440bc3.jpg http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/100_2150_zpsee29fb22.jpg http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/100_2148_zpsf124a775.jpg   Three crazy men proof marks under barrel:   http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/100_2147_zps99beb914.jpg http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/100_2145_zps30866a0d.jpg http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/100_2143_zpsc67ee829.jpg
  20. When I only owned a few things I didnt worry about it, but over the years that has changed.  After a fairly recent move into suburbia I find myself wondering what would happen if I were to get robbed, or a fire took our home.  I have always heard that firearm collections werent covered by normal home owners insurance and that I need a rider.  But to get the rider I have to get an appraisal. So....   Are there any reputable appraisers in  Mid TN? Is the insurance thing true? Any experience with the cost of either?   I have a few older items that I can't seem to nail down a value on and that would be helpful as part of the process, but I am not sure where to start and who to trust with knowledge of my entire collection.   Thanks   Tim
  21. Nope not circumventing in anyway...no worries.  There's only one person in the area I can think to get it appraised by, and he is also likely to be interested in it.  I want to have an idea what I am looking at before taking any offers from him and ending up getting low balled.  In all honesty it still "technically" belongs to my father and he is trying to gather funds for a new motor home.  I'd rather keep it myself.  I have a nice old side by side collection and I have grown attached to this even though I will never shoot it.  My dad is coming to visit in March and is bringing along a box of brass he has for it. We wont shoot it but I thought it would be nostalgic to have some loads to go with it.  I guess I'd rather slide my Dad some money if it's worth a few grand, but if it would bring big money I may have to watch it leave.  From what I have read this particular 3 barrel can fall into both categories  Outside of some of these odd ball guns I have a fair idea what things are worth, but I felt this one was worthy of sharing and certainly asking about.   Thanks!
  22. Yeah it has the marks, its a Sauer and Sons.  The rifle barrel is a 38/55 and the shotgun portion is a 12 ga.  All the numbers and marks match.  From what I know it came out of Africa.
  23. My father picked this up at an estate auction in 1977 and it has found it's way into my collection.  I dont see these come up often and cant find much out about them, but this one seems to be in better shape than most I see.  CAn anyone offer any info on the gun, or even a potential value?  We are considering selling it, and want to know if we should bother or keep it as an heirloom for my son.     http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/photo2_zps74f4e1e0.jpg http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q689/timthetoolman75/photo1_zps7e428e95.jpg
