Disassemble the magazine. Spray them out with gun scrubber (non-chlorinated brake cleaner works perfectly) and then wipe with dry paper towels or lint-free cloths until the cloths come out clean. I wiped the insides of mine down with MEK (methyl etyhl ketone) but that's probably a little on the side of overkill.

Well played.

I've cleaned up some non-firearms related old material (classic car stuff) and had no issues with it, but haven't refinished anything like that per se. Media blasting, even if only at a very low pressure and not enough to totally strip a finish down to the metal, can only help on most sprayed coatings as it gives a rough texture that allows the new finish to adhere properly.

Yep! But ours are being made in pink, gray and white urban camo with lime green letters.

Refinish of an AR15 lower receiver in Desert Tan
TGO David replied to TGO David's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
It sounds like we're going to do my brother's Vltor MUR upper in the same color so this could end up looking pretty sweet. Almost like an FN SCAR except with 100% less Ugly attached to it. -
Hey folks... As Len stated, we are trying to do a TGO Table at this dinner and right now it sounds like we are on our way to being able to have enough people present to pull it off. Essentially by buying it as a table, we are able to save a little bit of money individually. If you are going to attend, please reply and fill your name into the list below. If we have enough to do TWO tables, that would be even better! Table #1 1. TGO David 2. Mrs. TGO David 3. Hornet Handler 4. Mrs. Hornet Handler 5. DunnDW 6. 7. 8.

I like that better than any AK.

I'm getting tired of these server problems...

Nope. As soon as I find a co-lo that doesn't charge an obscene amount of money for rack space, I'll put a server of my own in there. -
Refinish of an AR15 lower receiver in Desert Tan
TGO David replied to TGO David's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
On the right-hand side of the receiver above the trigger group at about the 1:00 position was a laser engraving that had the name of his NFA trust and his home town. In the big blank area behind the mag well, above the trigger area. I didn't show that in any of the before photos as I figure he might want to keep that information private in case he ever uses the same engravings for some other NFA items. -
My brother had an AR15 lower that he originally intended to use for a short barrel NFA item but then changed his mind and wanted to do something else with it. Since he had already engraved the lower with his NFA related information (but never registered it) he asked if I could get rid of the engraving and then refinish it. Had the engraving been much deeper than it was, I would likely have used some two-part epoxy resin to fill it in, then sanded it smooth with the rest of the metal and shot over it. As it was, this was not necessary and all I had to do was media blast and then refinish it. First a before picture: And here is the lower after it was media blasted: As you can see, the finish that Spikes used on this lower permeated the alloy quite a bit. I was using low air pressure to keep from marking the receiver, and it took quite a long time to get it to that point. Now here are some after photos. I'm including a few because I thought it was rather neat how this color takes on different characteristics depending on lighting and background. Obviously he got the "Family Discount" but a job exactly like what I did here probably would have cost about $50 for anyone else who wanted to have it done.

Good points, Jason. I would add that carrying additional mags for your 1911 still puts you somewhat behind the curve in terms of capacity when you consider that you can also additional mags for your Glock 19 and have double the number of rounds per mag. It's really all about what you want to carry and whether you shoot it reliably and are good at reloading it under pressure. I think in most encounters, 16 rounds of 45acp for your 1911 are going to be sufficient provided you hit everything you pull the trigger on. I tend not to carry my 1911s for other reasons.
-
I'd pick up a heavier hammer spring just for the peace of mind it would give. I believe Wolff makes them. Smith & Wesson package them with every 5.45mm upper that they sell just because those Combloc primers tend to be pretty freaking hard. Not that this has anything to do with the price of tea in China, but it could be that your 6.8 rounds have heavy primers also.

Parts for my refinishing oven have started to arrive!
TGO David replied to TGO David's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
You know, I was pretty pumped by the idea of a FDE / coyote frame on a 1911 until I finally saw one done up in all FDE and it looked like a chunk of dried up river bed. A mix of FDE and black would probably look pretty good though. Ah, I found the photo in question... -

Ah, name calling... the refuge of the intellectually weak. Gabe wasn't convicted of a felony but he was up against felony charges was he not? It really doesn't matter, because I never said that I disagreed with his teachings nor did I say that I thought he should be ignored because of his murky past. I just said that I weigh a man's character along with everything else before making a decision to invest in that person or in whatever they are selling. Apparently that offends you because you elevate these professional trainers to hero-like status in your mind, or at least you act like you do. Since this is the case, there's really nothing left for you and I to discuss. Nah, I think a lot of the charges against Suarez are too cloudy to carry a whole lot of credibility so I am siding with him until my trust is proven to have been misplaced. I said earlier in this thread that I know people who plead out to lesser charges just to escape the Judicial circus with a little bit of their souls intact. It really sounds like this is what Mr. Suarez did and I cannot condemn him for that at all. Somehow Pharmtecher decided that I was criticizing specific people (Gabe) rather than being critical of generalities. Who knows. I've got better things to do than argue with him about something we are actually on the same side of.

Really? That's surprising about the LCP. I wouldn't have expected it to wear so fast. -
I am way behind on this but I owe my homeslice and all around good-dude "Mike" a big thank you for donating a cabinet to the cause. The cabinet he provided will be perfect for building an oven out of, large enough to handle rifle barrels and such. Other parts have started to arrive such as the programmable thermostat control that will keep the oven running reliably at the appropriate temperature(s). I am waiting on the insulation and heating elements, but other than that... I should be ready to assemble the oven within another week or two. Then I can get firearms taken care of!

As if your contribution to the thread so far has really helped? And yes, if I'm ever convicted of a felony then that will diminish my credibility and ability to offer training on matters of legal importance to people. The same as it would if I got into a firefight in Iraq and did several catastrophically stupid things that contributed to the deaths of member of my security detail. Oh, wait. Scratch that last one. Apparently it's not a career limiting move.

I hadn't noticed. Edited to add... the damn thing cut me off while I was trying to finish my post. There should have been a laughing smilie at the end of that. I've been working on the server pretty much all morning and it's starting to get on my last nerve. -

Two of our vendors in the greater middle-Tenn area have on-site gunsmiths that can help you. Jeff Walle at Guns & Leather in Greenbrier or Hero Gear down in Winchester. It's about equal distance for both of them from Murfreesboro.

Just a thought for you... A guy who swings from Yeager's balls shouldn't really pop off to much about matters of ethics or moral character.
-
I don't know about you, but a man's moral character and sense of ethics plays heavily into whether I will give much value to anything coming out of his mouth.
