  1. I'm not familiar with Vista (my son has it on his laptop, but I haven't messed with it). Does Vista have a "compatibility mode"? To find out....pick a program that won't run on Vista, right click it, click on properties, then click compatibility (if its even there)
  2. Federal Gold Metal Match, Black Hills Match, Remington Match (if you can find it), Hornady Match. Those are the ones I have used...they worked OK. I like 168 grain bullets myself, a bit more velocity than 175's and I rarely shoot past 800 yards anyway (my range is only 800 yards...I have to shoot across 2 different properties to reach 1000 yards, I do it sometimes but its a hassle because of livestock getting in the way, then I have to walk over there and run them off...so they can come back a few minutes later)
  3. Have you measured the crimp? It should be somewhere between .468" - .470"
  4. It will reach a bit further than that...800 yards is easy without pushing the loads too hard, 900 can be done with the right bullets and warm loads.
  5. Guys, Meet my 16 year old son, jackrabbit101 (he's the one in the video above)...I like the sig line jackrabbit. He's aspiring to be a Marine...and he's well on his way, he loves that ROTC class at school. Now for that range report (I should make jackrabbit101 do it...its his pistol)...he shot it a few times today, he was late getting in from school because he stayed over to help his auto mechanics teacher bleed some brakes or something so we didn't have much time, it was getting dark. The Bersa is accurate, the sights are set right...it hits the bullseye at 15 yards and it has not jammed or anything so far. Its a great little pistol for the $$$. It did nosedive one time (first round, full mag) which I believe is just a break in issue and won't happen much anymore, if at all.
  6. I can help you with that...its not hard to do.
  7. Me too...Sportsmans Safari was the seller ($560 + $20 for shipping + $20 for transfer fee + $10 for background check) Its got a Leupold 6-18x40mm Mark II Tactical scope on it ($619 from Cabelas), I tuned the trigger down to a nice crisp 28 oz. pull and worked on the fore end of the stock to keep it from making contact with the barrel...it shoots so good I didn't bother bedding it.
  8. Those at Dicks are not SPS Tacticals...those are SPS Varmints. Only Remington Premier dealers sell the Tacticals...the difference is the barrel length (Varmint is 26", the Tactical is 20") and the stock.
  9. I like mine...in the few months that I've had it, it has become my favorite rifle (and it has some stiff competition in my safe). Accurate, light enough to carry hunting, and most of all...HANDY (did I mention accurate??? less then .5 MOA...)
  10. I'll start by recommending that a new reloader buy a book called the "ABC's of Modern Reloading". Later tonight I'll try to add a few hints and tips from my own experience...Right now I'm on my way to pick up my wife's new XD 45 Compact.
  11. There should be some Jeacketed Soft Points out there somewhere. Next best thing to JHP.

    carry gun

Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Compact...I carried mine for a while, I only gave it up because it was a 9mm. Otherwise, an awesome pistol for the $$$.
  13. Phantom6 is right...but I will say that after you get your permit you should practice at 25 yards at least some. (I like 50 yards too) It makes you a better shot at the closer distances...aim small, miss small.
  14. I started with an RCBS RockChucker about 25 years ago...I still use the same one, but I did buy another RockChucker last year. Using both presses at once speeds things up considerably...without losing the precision of single stage presses. I shoot just as much 308 as I do 45acp...the precision matters to me.
  15. I carry a Baer stainless Stinger
  16. I will do a much better range report in a few days.... So far I'll say the sights are right on at 10 yards...easy to hit a Pepsi can.
  17. Not really a range report...but he couldn't wait to shoot it a few times. The first 3 rounds are WWB ball ammo, the last 3 are my own "special recipe". My very first YouTube video (only 34 seconds, it was a trial run)...range report still to come.
  18. Jeremiah Johnson...darn good movie.
  19. Nice lookin Springer...
  20. Ballistics...my favorite subject. For a 38 Special I'd go with the 135 +P Gold Dots already mentioned. For a 357...any of the factory loads that use a quality 125-135 grain bullet. I'm the oddball that carries reloads...but my load EXACTLY duplicates the ballistics of Hornady's 230 grain XTP +P TAP ammo out of my pistol (Baer Stinger). My load does have a tad more muzzle flash than the factory load though.
  21. 870's are better, but the 500's will work. I have 3 Mossberg 500 Persuaders loaded with #4 buckshot.
  22. Agreed 100%... Agreed again...but I did see several bears while backpacking. Got out of the tent one night to take a leak and one ran off...I guess he was looking for scraps (we were near, but not in, a shelter (Low Gap shelter in VA). They know where to find scraps...beware of the shelters.
  23. To clarify my previous post: I never said a 45acp should be used to "hunt" bear...just that a hot loaded penetrating bullet would kill one. I know this from experience...not just guessing. We are talking about the "Smokies" here, and most of the bears there are around 300 lbs. or so, I know full well there are bigger ones in there...but most of them are not that big. I've done a little backpacking myself but its been a while back...my Dad still goes when he can. Together back in the 80's we hiked the Appalachian Trail a lot....we covered all of it from Springer Mtn. in Georgia up to Carlisle, PA. But that's not where I shot the bear with the 45...that happened while deer hunting near Blairs Gap a few years back. (bowhunting...I'm not sure which of us was caught off guard more, and yes....it was self defense) Again...a 45 is not the "optimum" bear gun...but it is more practical to carry hundreds of miles than a heavy 44. (Just my opinion...and proper loads are IMPORTANT). Carry something you are used to...it just might happen fast...REAL FAST. (if it happens at all)
  24. I went to the last one (month or so ago)...to be honest I had not even heard about this one. I like the shows at Meadowview in Kingsport better.
  25. I just got finished playing with the "database"...and its not 100% accurate. My wife's name is not on there, my Dad's name is not on there...along with 23 other people I know that have their HCP. My name is on there though...all that said, it should not be on the web.
