  1. A friend of mine is looking for a nice (probably folding) knife as a gift for his father in law. He's thinking about a Benchmade, and I'm wondering if there are other options that he might consider which don't have quite that amount of "brand name tax".

Autos really aren't an option in this case, and it likely won't be shipped anywhere for maintenance/ sharpening.

Any brand suggestions you all have would be appreciated!

Been a long time since I saw ammo at a gas station

Really? It's pretty common up here when you're outside the more urban/ suburban areas. No "regular" beer, wine, or sprits though. For that, you have to go to the offsale. (Which is frequently pretty much the same physical place, with just an open door and wall seperating them).

  3. The -'06 is a very established round, and the volume of rifles chambered in it suggest it'll probably never go away. I (half) jokingly tell people that I like to be able to find my Three Bs at the gas station: bullets, beer, and batteries. The .30-'06 definitely qualifies.

In terms of range and scope, if you're sticking to under 200 yds a 2-7 will be serviceable. Get it mounted and go have fun!

Everyone knows that scopes work best the closer they are to the bore.   I've been thinking about shaving some more off the top to get even lower.

Start around 200 thousandths off the top of the barrel to fit the bell. Don't worry if you get into the bore, that's just early porting.

If I can't get rings low enough then I'm thinking about just getting some zip ties and adding a wood wedge between the scope and the rail for an added few MOA of cant.

Alternately, you could wrap a drill in really coarse sand paper and hog out the bottom ring, then fill the top with JB Weld...

And typically it's black on black crime/shooting, again not the narrative.

That's kind of my point though: This little kid got national coverage (at least on CNN's main page, for multiple days) but the black kids in Chicago are only part of the tally, if that's even reported.

All the talk about how the mainstream media seek to portray white people in a bad light while glossing over the faults of non-white people is kind of overblown, in my opinion. Yes, there absolutely are biases, bit we all have them and I really don't think there's a concerted push from the mainstream media to make white people look bad.

  7. Lots of comments regarding how the media would be up in arms if this had been a black kid. But, I've seen a lot of "XX number of people shot and killed in Chicago last weekend" stories, and that's as far as they go. I'm sure some of those people have been little kids, but you don't see their name or their picture or anything else about the shooting. Just the total deaths for the weekend.

I'm sure we can all agree that the media are always doing a less-than-perfect job, just like all the rest of us. And, while more air time might help in some way to decrease the violence in a city like Chicago, I suspect that more exposure for this particular story isn't likely to prevent a lunatic from killing anyone in the future.
