  1. All I can say is that I'm glad that tactical talker dude is not my neighbor.
  2. It was a High Standard Model 10 semi-automatic 12 gauge. I was a police detective in the 1970s at the time when the drug wars were beginning, and this was thought to be an 'ideal undercover weapon' (as said by the firearms salesman). Seems like it held four plus one. I wore it under long coats like a London Fog all-weather coat or trench coat. It had swivels for a carrying strap and I wore it slung on my right shoulder (it was a rh only gun). The idea was great but the execution was terrible. It swung around under the coat like a sack of coal, beat you up if you tried to run with it, was constantly gigging you with the handles, and on top of that was prone to ejection problems and failures to feed. It became as unwanted as piss ants in your bed and scorpions in your drawers. I bitched and moaned so much that finally the Chief of Detectives relented and it was removed from service. While it was the forerunner of short-barrelled guns to come, the execution of this monstrosity was an abomination. Never trust firearms salesmen.
  3. My 2006 installation of CZ 75b Truglo sights have served me well but have faded almost into oblivion. I've looked at several night sights and the Mepro Hyper-Bright sights have my attention. Has anyone had experience with these sights? I'm looking for a CZ P-01 to buy and wanted to get the same sights for both pistols. I'd appreciate any opinions. Thanks.
  4. See if this helps. Excellent site for gun laws and related stuff. Handgunlaw.us link for the Un ited States
  5. I'm a sucker for useful information. Practical Shooter on Youtube has a bunch from this to CZ hacks to making a workbench block. Simple handgun vice Well done, easy to understand, and lots to learn.
  6. The Chattanooga area suffers from a lack of competent gunsmiths so welcome. Let me know when you're open for business. I'd like to meet you and bring you some work.
  7. I won't be though. That's the reason I acquired self-defense coverage. I can live and not put my family in the poor house.
  8. Congratulations! That could well turn out to be the best education of your life. Now you see why I am passionate about educating gun owners about this. Thanks.
  9. I'm a member of ACLDN. They educate the gun owner.
  10. If I might recommend a great book to read by Mas, it's "Deadly Force: Understanding Your Right to Self-Defense, 2nd edition Paperback." This is the new edition that comes out this week. I read the first edition and can honestly say that if you read nothing else, you'll have read the best one volume book ever on the self-defense issues you should know. ( I plan on ordering it myself this week as it has very current information.) Deadly Force 2nd ed. - Massad Ayoob. Thanks for your interest.
  11. You're an optimist. Even good people do dumb things. With good people they make big errors out of fear and out of ignorance. "Ignorance" is not used derisively here. We are all ignorant about many things. But in carrying a gun and when to use it in self-defense and the aftermath of using it is an ignorance that can be overcome if the person wants to put in the effort. Just like we train, shoot, practice, and learn all we can about our firearms, equally important is to learn about the legalities of self defense. That takes work. But as a gun may save your life, so too can learning the whys, wherefores, and consequences of using that gun. The good thing is that knowledge is readily available.
  12. Here's some ideas that are believed to be right, but are wrong. 1. Drag 'em in the house so as to make it legal. 2. Ain't no jury gonna convict me. 3. I'll keep a throwaway gun with me just in case. 4. The lawyer who did my will is good enough for me. 5. Let 'em sue. I'll beat it in court (with the lawyer who did my will). 6. I ain't gonna talk to the police until my attorney arrives. 7. Everybody will see my shooting was justified. 8. My home insurance will cover me. 9. I'm ain't going to waste my time learning about legalities. And on it goes.
  13. Not to be flippant, but I don't have enough time to do something that can so easily be done by an interested party. There are many good sources. Here's a great source. Then if you're interested you can take it from there. Massad Ayoob. Watch his videos, read his books, listen to what he's telling you. He's a 40 year expert. I know of no one better for you to start with for the education you and every gun carrier needs. It requires study, lots of it. A permit class teaches you almost nothing. If you think it's too much time to study, get involved in a self defense shooting. Then you'll get an education that you'll pay for dearly. I hope you'll take the time to do it. It will make you wiser and better informed.
  14. As we hear more about those who legally carry firearms and use them in self-defense, almost all discussions of shootings from someone legally carrying a firearm lead to these facts. Many people carry guns legally. Fewer people have a license to carry permit. Damn few that carry guns have the slightest idea of what the law says about self-defense, have ever given a cursory examination as to what constitutes actionable self-defense, and, should they use their gun, what to say to police after the shooting, how to present themselves to police, and what's going to legally happen to them afterward. That's scary. Do yourself and your family a favor. Stay out of prison. Educate yourself before you go to court for a shooting you're involved in.
  15. Maybe it's just me but in too many gun shops today that claim to have a gunsmith, what they actually have is someone who assembles the latest and greatest tactical accoutrements to put on the tactical weapons the store pushes. Their knowledge is limited, skills slight at best, and take forever at easy stuff, but can tell you what camo is best, which armor plate you should be wearing, and how good they are with a knife. Ask them to fix a Browning Sweet Sixteen and you're greeted with a look best described as a six-year-old boy who is lost and scared. They're clueless. I'd love to see a list of knowledgeable gunsmiths around Tennessee who can do the job though maybe it's easier to find a pot of gold a drunk leprechaun lost on the way to buy gas.
  16. I wear Yaqui or JIT holsters 90% of the time if I'm wearing a belt gun. With simple construction, a Yaqui or JIT holds the gun firm enough and is easy to conceal and the most comfortable belt holsters I've ever worn. Fits my lifestyle. I have them for all my pistols, though I never use them on revolvers. My CZ97b has currently (17 years) been riding in a FIST holster. It's well made but is uncomfortable after several hours in a vehicle or at a desk. None of the big boys (Don Hume, Galco, my usual brands) makes a JIT/Yaqui style for the 97b anymore. I did a search and found this. A Barsony Yaqui style made for the 97b on Amazon. At the price of about $28.00 including tax, I ordered it. Got it two days later and am very pleased. Nicely made, fits great, firm retention, covers the trigger, and the gun comes out without a leather death grip. I found it everything I wanted without a upper-level price. Now I'm looking at other pistols that may need a new leather home.
  17. For my defensive shotgun being familiar with and enjoying AK47s, I went with the Saiga-12 about 17 years ago. Simple, easy to maintain, shoots any 12 ga. ammo and works like an AK. At fifty yards, slugs hit COM reliably with the iron sights. It could be tricked out I suppose, but I see no need to do so. I'm not a camo tactical guy, just someone who's seen what a 12 gauge can do in the right hands. I don't think the Saiga -12 is available anymore. I see there are some other AK types, but I have no experience with them. Since no one is getting into my home without my knowledge, I keep the 5-shot mag in, empty chamber. Easy to rack in the dark. Extra mags at hand.
  18. I am an old school guy beginning with my first handgun purchase in 1969 with a Ruger Super Single-Six which I still use regularly and still have the box and papers (the original grips are in the safe). As I said, I'm old. Being old, I grew up with revolvers, particularly S&Ws and old model Rugers (pre-transfer bars), and the CZs were the first automatics that I owned that gave me satisfaction in shooting (along with Makarovs). I still carry CZs with the occasional backup S&W Bodyguard from 1966 in my outer coat pocket and for yard work an old Mak of some flavor. Old habits die hard.
