  1. I was really impressed with David Bullard recently.

I ordered 4 holsters and a new belt from him. While I think he is a one man shop, he responded to my email within a day, worked with me to get my stuff like I wanted it and I had them all on the 29th business day after placing my order.

I can't speak highly enough of him and his work. I know he's in Texas, but I'd love to see him there.

  2. And burden any branch of the service with him? I think not.

They're big enough for it. If there is one thing our military is very good at doing, it is taking command of a bunch of navel gazing whiners and teaching them that the world is about more than just them, and that there are things out there that are more important than you and what you think.

It's an option that would do a lot of people some good.

  3. As someone who was in One World Trade on September 11, and spent 9 months there afterward, love Bush or hate him, no one can accuse him of not doing what he said he was going to do.

I truly mourn the loss of togetherness and patriotism that was present in the days and months following September 11. We have made a lot of mistakes in the time since 9/11 and the Bush administration certainly made some of those. That said, I am and will always be grateful that President Bush was on watch, did the best he could with what he had, and that his support for our troops was not used as an opportunity to stump, but was always humble and heartfelt.

  4. If I were in your shoes, I might use the five years you have left before the option of retirement to boost your skill set and education, all the while still collecting a paycheck. That way when you get out, you have the option and skill set to do what you really want to do. I'm in the forensics business, and we love to bring on former LEOs, but not having a degree will almost always be an issue because it's a lot harder for us to put you on the stand as an 'expert'.

I might take a step back, and ask "if you could do whatever you want for a job, what would it be?" It's easy to dismiss that question because it sounds kind of "self-helpy?", but I think it's an important question for all of us. If you don't like what you do, it's up to you to make the change. I think you've got that part down, I would just want to make sure that you don't make a change to feel equally unfulfilled.

As the others above said, thank you for your service. You are in an overworked, underpaid field, and we all benefit from your sacrifice. Thanks for that.

  5. "These, my friends, are the free-mans modern day musket."

I'm with JustAGuy, I think this sums it up.

I'm not sure what I think about "Homeland Defense Rifle", as it does denote a certain right-wingedness that I'm not sure we want, but I'd much rather see CNN referring to them as that rather than "assault rifle".

I saw an article recently that I'll try and find and repost wherein the author makes a point that every responsible citizen has a civic responsibility to be familiar with operation and employment of their country's "Primary Battle Rifle". We are a long way removed in this country from any concept of civil defense that involves anything other than natural disasters, but the point is a good one. Instead of having to justify why we have "Assault rifles" or "Evil Black Rifles", we should turn it around to say we have them out of the responsibility of being good citizens - "Why don't you have one?"

Come to think of it, I'm going to start referring to mine as my country's Primary Battle Rifle and see where it gets me.

If nothing else, it will serve as good justification down the road with CENTCOM (aka my wife) as to why I have to buy that SCAR.

  6. Mark over at the Safe House has some Browning safes in a pretty classy gloss black. You can see your reflection in them. I've got a Browning Bronze series that I got from him and it fits the dimensions you gave, though I think you might have an issue fitting 18-20 long guns plus the pistols and other assorted valuables in one that size. Maybe not, though if you arrange them just right. It would be worth your time to call Mark and ask.

  7. Since I got the Benelli M4, it is the standard I judge all others by. You will not be disappointed with that purchase.

That said, it is a different class than the pump guns mentioned. Betweem the 870 and the 590, I don't know that you can go wrong with either. If I had to pick, it would probably be the 590.

  8. I don't see how this is going to happen with the settlement they made with H&K.

"Okay, we'll stop making the .22 version, but we're going to knock it off in 9mm"?

It just seems like a sure fire way to have to hand your counsel a lot of money.

Re: Heckler and Koch, Inc. vs. German Sport Guns GmbH, American Tactical Imports,

    Inc. Civil Action No. 1 : 09-cv-00039-WTL-JMS (S.D. Indiana)

    For immediate release,

We are very pleased to report that the litigation filed by Heckler & Koch, Inc. against

German Sport Guns GmbH and its U.S. distributor, American Tactical Imports, Inc.,

together with all counterclaims, has been settled.

The terms of the settlement are confidential to the parties and cannot be disclosed. A

dismissal of the above-referenced litigation, and all of the party’s claims against each

other, is expected to be filed in the near future.

Attorneys for H&K will be issuing a statement. The attorneys for ATI have already

issued a statement announcing the settlement.

Production and importation of the original design GSG-5 ceased as of Oct, 8, 2009 with

the signing of the agreement. The remaining inventory now in the USA can be sold by

ATI, all distributors and dealers. ATI currently has GSG-5’s in stock.

All sales of the GSG-5 by ATI must conclude by January 31, 2010. ATI will continue to

service every firearm that it imports into the USA.

    Thank you for your support.

    Anthony DiChario

    President C.E.O.

    American Tactical Imports, Inc.

    That said, I wouldn't mind seeing a 9mm version.

  9. The whole restaurant posting issue has turned out to be a non-issue for me, as none of the restaurants that I frequent on a regular basis have posted. I think it's going to become even less of an issue over time as the public and the media move on to something else.

That said, this blogger has an interesting approach to dealing with restaurants that have posted:

On Establishments That Post | Snowflakes in Hell

Kevin got a reply back from the establishment that prohibited carry in Arizona, which basically revealed the proprietor isn’t the biggest fan of ordinary citizens carrying guns around. That’s making me wonder if there might be a technique that would be more effective for gun owners to try. I live six miles outside of a major city who’s culture and population are not too friendly to the idea either, but I’ve only ever into one place that’s got a sign. I think the reason establishments aren’t quick to post signs is twofold, one is that most of the guns walking around this area are out of sight, meaning businesses and proprietors aren’t really all that aware people are walking around with guns. Two is that they don’t want to risk the signal that their establishment is that kind of place. It’s to the latter that this idea is geared. Let me give you a hypothetical conversation or e-mail:

You: I notice the no guns sign outside. What kind of place is this? Do I have to be worried this is the kind of establishment people want to bring guns to?

Them: Oh no, it’s perfectly fine. There was a chance in state law, and we have to put that there to keep people with guns out.

You: It makes me uncomfortable that you think you have to put a sign up like that. What does it say about the kind of place? They don’t have a sign up at <pick your own competitor here>, maybe that’s a safer place.

Now they will likely try to explain it away, but they will wonder how many customers think the same thing and don’t say anything. Maybe I’m totally nuts here, but I’m suggesting that based on the fact that someone putting up a sign likely isn’t really likely to budge on the issue in terms of philosophy, unless a lot of gun owners complain. Probably not enough will to make a difference.

But if you can make the manager fear that the no guns sign is making customers wonder if their business is kind of a rough place, or that the sign is reflecting poorly on their business, they might rethink it. Obviously that’s not a prescription for every circumstance, but I have to wonder if that could work on some proprietors who aren’t going to be persuaded by pro-gun arguments.

  10. JHat, that's a sweet weapon. I've got my heart set on a walnut scout squad.

For all of those coveting the rifle, I bet you'll be able to get a pretty good deal on it after Jason's wife beats him to death with it when he gets grease on her couch.
