  1. I have a Kimber Ultra II Eclipse as my EDC. Well over 500 rounds of all types. It loves Remington Golden Sabre 230 grain as well as regular ball. As stated above, the compact 1911 requires some extra effort due to the need for a tool for disassembly( ie. paper clip). However, any FTF I have ever witnessed has been due to "limp wristing". As with any firearm for daily carry, practice, practice, practice.
  2. Welcome to 1911's. Let us know how the 9MM runs. Now post some pics.
  3. I agree. Not knocking any brand, I like them all. However, buy what you want if you can. I know of a local guy who has $1400 in a RIA because he wanted to "save" money. If you want a Kimber, look around for a nice used (broken in) example. I bought mine from a local gun guru. He had fired approximately 500 rounds and wanted a new pistol. Every source I have consulted recommends 500 rounds to break in a 1911 before carrying. When you factor the cost of this ammo, approximately $200 +/- into your decision, it makes the RIA's and Springfields climb into the range 10mm4me is talking about. Just my thoughts.
  4. +1 on kholster. They have a special going on for $40. Check out their site. I also have a Don Hume H715 that works great for my Glock 26 and Kimber Ultra. I like the versatility of being able to swap depending on my mood.

    "Good" Entry 1911

I shot the RIA's, Taurus, Springfield, and Para's before buying my Kimber used. I was shopping in the $700 range. However, I decided that I would spend more on a 1911. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Kimber snob and if buying new would have been proud to own any of the above. My decision was driven by the knowledge that I wanted a dependable carry gun from day one. Everyone advised firing 500+ rounds in a new 1911 before carrying. I factored that additional $200+ in ammunition into my purchasing decision. I was able to find a local gunsmith who basically buys, breaks-in, and sells because he likes new and different. My gain. Good luck with your purchase, and as stated earlier, welcome to the 1911 family.
  6. +1 on kholster. Not the prettiest, but very comfortable. Give Jimmy a try.
  7. I carry a Kimber Ultra Eclipse. Loaded is weighs 36oz. because it's solid stainless. I bought a IWB from www.kholster.com. I have worn mine for several hours very comfortably. Great customer service and a great warranty.
  8. Savage Gulf and Burgess Falls. If you've never seen Burgess Falls, you owe it to yourself. Much more spectacular than Fall Creek Falls.
  9. If it has to be explained, you're not affected by the 1911. It is hard to describe. Don't get me wrong, I like all guns. But the feeling I get when I even hold a 1911 is different. It is just comforting.
  10. I've used my HCP as photo ID at BNA (Nashville International), DTW (Detroit Wayne), and Philadelphia airport. Never had anything but friendly reactions. Usually I wear either a Kimber or Glock cap when I travel. Was even asked in Detroit if I had checked my handgun and wasn't it great that Tennessee and Michigan had reciprocity so I could carry when in the state on business. However, it's probably not the best with certain people. I started after receiving my permit because of an incident in Portland, OR in 2004. The security line had an additional screening for gun powder residue and explosives residue.(It could have been baby wipes and good actors, but it made me think). I guess I just don't want a bunch of TSA agents feaking out if I ever encounter a similar test and want to remove any doubts that, yes, I have fired a handgun recently.
  11. Very well said. The right pistol is like the right woman or the right shoes, you just know. I have a Glock that I like really well, but a 1911 provides a feeling that I love. I looked at everything from a Rock Island to an Ed Brown. I really liked the Kimbers or the Colt Defender. The reviews on the Ultra's that are bad can be attributed to two major issues......limp wristing and the factory Kimber mags. Simple physics. These require a firm grip because the short recoil spring. I've found that Wilson Combat mags feed very well. I suggest you go to a range that rents 1911's, find people locally, and shoot as many different one's as you can. Above all, join some 1911 forums and learn as much as possible. Enjoy!!!!!!
  12. I'm not an expert, but I am an owner of an Ultra II. The series II refers to the Schwartz type safety. The Ultra II requires more care when fieldstripping and the II stands for generation 2. The new generation Kimber’s designated with a “II” have a safety feature that locks the firing pin in place until the palm safety is depressed. Some gun gurus in pistol forums complain about the feature and say it can cause misfires. After 500 rounds or more in my gun, I’ve never experienced a single problem with the added safety. You can do a search on forums that deal primarily with the 1911 and get more info.
  13. I have a Kimber Eclipse UC II as my daily carry. I,too,am amazed at the accuracy of the 3" barrel. I love shooting 1911's better than other pistols. I am more accurate with the Kimber than my Glock.
  14. I've used both mags. I like and recommend the Wilson. They have a nylon follower vs. metal on Kimber, Chip McCormick. I like the idea that there is not metal to metal contact. Once you get the Wilson, you will see the difference. If you don't like, you won't have a problem selling.
  15. I've shot both. I like the beavertail. It feels better in my hand. As for concealment, it's not much harder. My only complaint is that it digs in when wearing IWB for long periods. Oh, well, incentive to lose this spare tire to make my beavertail more comfortable. You've got to enjoy being able to say, "Mine has a beavertail"
