"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis

, though it still baffles me as to why Nashville has so much trouble getting a chapter going. The number of potential speakers has to be much greater than is available here. From experience I know starting a new organization isn't easy but the key seems to be consistancy - pick a date and a place and stick with it so the members know when and where to meet each month. It's not rocket science

Based on the last 3 years the TFA and others have been trying to get this changed the loudest opponents have been the Tennessee Restaurant Association and the hotel/motel organization (as well as the anti-gun legislators of course). The restaurants like being able to hid behind the law stating their hands are tied on this while being able to deny lawful carry believing it makes their other patrons safer; totally disregarding that all they've done is make those sites a target rich environment for criminals.

What you have discribed is not a disqualification. The problem is that the VA has provided names of 11,000 veterans being treated for mental health (during Clinton administraion) to the NCIC which will deny them the right to purchase a firearm even though they have not been "audicated by a court". There is a current push to require all veterans going to the VA for whatever reason to be evaluated for mental health. Nothing stops the VA from dumping those additional names to the NCIC.

Difference in National Park Rules?
Tim Nunan replied to waynesan's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
As I understand it firearms are prohibited in national parks. National forests rules are compliance with what the firearms rules in each state where the national forest is. -
Lakeway TFA chapter November meeting
Tim Nunan replied to Tim Nunan's topic in Events and Gatherings
ATF Supervisory Special Agent Steve Cordle provided candid and forthright insight on how the Knoxville office is set up and operates. Cordle didn't shy from any questions nor give waffling answers. When some of the questions concerned policy of which gun owners might not approve he suggested we contact our elected officals. There was discussion on the names given to the NCIC by the Veterans Administration and the newly proposed push to have all veterans evaluated for post tramatic stress syndrome (PTS). Cordle said the ATF doesn't and can't legally use this data if it is just someone that has been evaluated or treated for PTS. The law as currently written states only those "ajudicated by a court" can be denied firearm possession and that is the criteria used by ATF. Cordle did admit that the names in the NCIC by the VA would be denied when attempting to purchase a firearm. He also said that he told his father that if the VA ever suggest such an evaluation his dad was to denied it. We discussed the actions of the ATF agents in Virgina going to gun shows and then harassing customers' family and neighbors by visiting them and asking if they knew the individual was buying or thinking about buying a firearm. Cordle stated that would never happen out of his office and that the Virgina office was disciplined for what they did. A good speaker, laid back and friendly presentation. -
Good Hunting: An Interview By Bill Steigerwald Monday, November 12, 2007 Ted Nugent isn't the only guy in America who's not afraid to say hunting is good for the country. Frank Miniter -- the award-winning editor of American Hunter magazine who's stalked game on five continents -- has written "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Hunting." The latest in Regnery Publishing's "PIG" series, it defends hunting from its know-nothing media critics in the big cities and spells out how it benefits conservation, cuts crop damage and saves human lives. Q: What's your book about and why did you write it? A: I've been reporting on these things for more than a decade. I worked for Outdoor Life Magazine and now American Hunter magazine, and after digging into what hunting actually does, I found all these facts that the mainstream media are not telling. I see hunting as the conservative environmental movement, actually. When you get really deep into it, that's what hunters really are. They're doing so much good, but that word just isn't getting out there. I thought this should be in a book and it should be out there for people to completely grasp, so I went to Regnery with the idea and it worked.... http://www.townhall.com/columnists/BillSteigerwald/2007/11/12/good_hunting_an_interview?page=full&comments=true

To "win" you must have the highest score in your NRA classification, i.e., Marksman, Sharpshooter, Master, etc. The real goal is self improvement and moving up to the next classification. Each match gives "rewards" based on their financial capabilities, medals, money, NRA money credits, trophies.

Only Zack Wamp has signed on as cosponsor of H.R. 1791, Fairness in Firearm Testing Act, which requires the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to make video recordings of the examination and testing of firearms and ammunition. No more arbitary declarations that some weapons are machine guns just because they malfunction. Time to get the rest of our congress critters on board.</I></I></I></I></I>

Hunters may help research of coyotes Wednesday, October 24, 2007 BY FRED J. AUN For the Star-Ledger Roland Kays wants dead coyotes. But he'll be happy with just their heads. "Put it in bag with a label on it," he said. "Or tie on a tag." That sounds nasty, but Kays isn't some morbid sicko. He's the curator of mammals at the New York State Museum and he's trying to solve the mystery of the Eastern Coyote. With the help of hunters and trappers from New Jersey and other Northeast states -- who are being asked to donate any coyotes they shoot or trap -- Kays is attempting to learn why coyotes around here are different from their cousins in the West.... So after all the passing months/years no one else could have stepped up and taken charge? Nashville chapter has at least tried to continue the effort. -
ETSU Students Protest For Campus Carry

Since there is is this kind of support for handguns at ETSU not to mention that fact that there is a markmanship club one does wonder why a TFA chapter couldn't be maintained in the Tri-Cities. Could it be that those that attempted it just didn't stick with it nor attempt to reach all the potential members? -
Although our scheduled speaker wasn't able to make the meeting a guest, Mike Faulk, agreed to address the nullification subject. Mike is a practicing civil law attorney from Hawkins county and presented a surprisingly candid view of jury nullification the upshot being that attorneys and judges prefer us to be ignorant of it so they can better manipulate the juries. He was a very good speaker. Mike is running for the Republican nomination for the Tennessee Senate District 4 (Claiborne, Grainger, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, and Union counties)
