I really wish they had made the frame aluminum to shave some weight.

It was great to just sit down in a big patch of honeysuckle and not worry about having a tree.

Looks like the Tenzing is 7lbs and 3oz.  Yeah aluminum would have been nice.  Still have my standard vest (non kickstand frame) to fall back to if needed.

I bought the same vest in APG last year, but it was heavier than I could tolerate. I sold it to a buddy and went back to my old one. However, it was super comfortable. If you don't mind the weight, you will enjoy it.

Good to know.  I wore it around at the show and it seemed ok but I also didn't have anything in the pockets.   Looks like it weights 6 lbs. 14 oz.

Did you score one of the Alps Grand Slam Turkey Vests at the show?  Has a kickstand frame (http://www.alpsoutdoorz.com/products/nwtf/hunting-vests/grand-slam)

Hunting buddy and I each bought one.   Show price was $99 and no sales tax.  Website price has $179.  My hunting buddy said this pack looks much better than the Tenzing that he paid a lot more for and is going to sell now.   Picked up a replacement turkey pot call in addition (lost a good one in the fields last season).   It's made by Tru-Tone.  Is a water proof hand turned corian pot.  Show price $40, website price $60.

  4. Great resource. Thank you sir.

Barnett makes pretty good quality crossbows. I have been using one the past few seasons. It's been pretty solid and no issues. Cocking it does take some upper body strength so I would recommend one of the assistants that you can add on into the stock of the crossbow. Plus that way if you forgot your crossbow cocker when out in the field it's not an issue. Some come with decent optics and some not. Looking to change out my crosshair optic with a red dot.

Look for a booth called Tru-Tone Custom Calls (http://www.tru-tonecalls.com/) at the NWTF show.  All of their calls are water proof and I have been using their products for a few years now.  Highly recommended.  They usually work me a deal on multiple products and throw in some extras.  I lost a slate call in the field this past season and will be buying another from them this year at the show..

You using the factory choke? The longbeards are great shells. If my mossberg didn't shoot the Hevi 7's so well, I'd be shooting longbeards.

No, using an Indian Creek choke (standard constriction .665).  Can use all lead and hybrid heavy loads with shot sizes from #4 through #8 with the Indian Creek choke so that gives me plenty of choices to test out.

I had been using the Hevi's but I think I'm going to go with the Long Beards this season if they pattern well with my setup.

Yes, it's still nearly 2 months away. Who cares! I am pumped up and can't wait.

Anybody got a new shotgun this year?

Who's going to the NWTF show?

Very anxious myself.  I bought a new Remington 870 SPS Super Mag Turkey Pump-Action Shotgun about 2 years ago.  Will be my 3rd season with it.  I need to get out and pattern it with a variety of Winchester Longbeard XR shotshells I purchased at the end of last season to see which works best.  Struck out last year on turkey and had a few missed shots.  Hopefully better luck this year.  I've booked a room with the block rate at Opryland Hotel for the NWTF show to take in as much as I can.  Should be good.

Do any of you have any experience hunting black bears with 10mm?  I am leaning toward the Underwood 220 grain hard cast.  My weapon is a gen 4 Glock 20 with a 6" KKM barrel.

No experience on the bear hunt side but that's probably your best choice in ammo.   I carry a Glock 20 Gen4 with me during hunting season in case I run into any un-friendlies and usually carry Underwood 10mm 200gr.  How do you like the KKM barrel?  Been thinking about one.

Would love to see pics of that Browning!!

Typo.  It's a 1998, not 1989.  Almost don't want to shoot it but I will.  Not a big fan of safe queens, prefer to actually use them.  Am sure it will need some oil.

  10. Just picked up a 1989 Browning Semi-Auto Gold Hunter 12 Gauge that had never been fired and still in the original box.  That one just kinda showed up but the gun that I have been planning on in the near future is a Glock 19 MOS.  I did the Remington Black Friday deal on 9mm and let's just say I have some 9mm to burn through this year.

I've only had mine a month but it's the absolute closest thing I've driven to my modded '74 bronco(regretted selling it each day since) that I've ever found. Unless Ford really puts out a fantastic new bronco next year I'll likely have the FJ until it's keys are pried from my cold dead fingers.

Especially since they discontinued them two years ago.  I had a 2007 Black Cherry FJ for about 5 years until I traded it in on a new Toyota Tundra SuperMax Rock Warrior 4WD (growing family).  I had a 3" OME suspension lift, rock rails and 33" BFG A/T's and rear locker on it.  That FJ got me everywhere, especially in inclement weather.   It was hard to let it go.

Shot another box of the same loads today.  Love this stuff.  Checked all the shell casings for anything unusual.  Nothing out of the ordinary.  Will be buying more of this ammo.  Maybe 180 grain as well.

Yeah I have a lot of the 180 XTP and never had an issue.  Good stuff.  I've shot some Atlanta Arms 10mm also and have had pretty good success with it.

Cabela's... To me it is not even close. The food prep stuff that Cabela's sells is top notch. I'm bummed about BP buying them. What really sucks is that I lived in Ft Oglethorpe GA for 10 years. Right after we moved there they started working on the roads and the underground infrastructure there. So, for 10 years I lived with a bunch of torn up roads on the main way for me to get in and out.

We were big fans of Costco when we moved up from Atlanta but there was not one in the Chattanooga area. So what happens after we move? The build a Costco and a Cabela's that is about 6 minutes from our old house and I would have driven right past twice a day minimum...

We pop down to the one in Huntsville every couple of months. Gives us an excuse to break out of the normal weekend routine. Sometimes we take back roads to get there just to see different areas and not drone down the interstate

You definitely moved at a wrong time.  lol.   There's a Bass Pro, Cabela's and Costco all within a few miles from each other.   We pit stopped at that new Cabela's this past summer on our way to South Carolina for vacation.  I think I saw 3 Cabela's on I-75 on the way.  Wish we had Cabela's in Tennessee instead of 6 Bass Pro's.

  14. UPS missed the mark on this one.  Made it to Franklin (where I live) and got loaded to the wrong truck and took back off to Atlanta and then back to Chattanooga and hopefully back to Franklin for the 2nd time.  Would be nice if it makes it back in time as it's a Christmas present for my wife.  Thanks UPS for your "Operational Conditions" issue.  It was a 2-day Free Shipping so I really shouldn't complain.

I'm glad I'm not the only one!

Yes, those impromptu range trips'll catch you by surprise!  Now I have enough of each type that I'm just packing 9mm handguns, an AR, and AR pistol both in 5.56/.223.  Defensive stuff in the mags, and a few boxes of plinking stuff in case the new range is open in wifey's hometown.

Yeah I was well short of what I should have brought the previous road trip when there was an impromptu range visit.   Hate that.  Am just going to start bringing more than I think I need.  Rolling arsenal.

  16. Bass Pro prices are terrible and the store brands are very low quality.  I am definitely a Cabela's loyalist and am a Club Member.  I receive lots of great deals, free shipping, generous club points to use toward purchases and at least once a month have a 10% off + free shipping deal.  Bummed about the Bass Pro buyout, hope it falls through.  Cabela's is definitely aimed more toward hunting and outdoors (which works well for me) as opposed to Bass Pro which is aimed more toward fishing.   I do enjoy the no sales tax since they do not have a brick and mortar store in Tennessee but I suspect that will soon change.  The Cabela's store brands have always been high quality and a lot of the store brand items have lifetime guarantees which is nice (deer blinds, trail cameras, hunting boots, etc.) that I have purchased.  The only thing negative that I have found about Cabela's is their firearm prices but Bass Pro is just as bad.   As is Gander Mountain, Academy, etc.  All the big box stores are overpriced in regards to firearms.
