DPMS AP4 .308....FDE Precision Carbine Build
Kenstaroni replied to Kenstaroni's topic in Show and Tell
I love them too. They are the only bipod I run now. I wish they weren't so expensive, but they are worth the money in my opinion. A suppressor would be nice...the PWS brakes are pretty loud. I have to apologize in advance to anyone shooting next to me at the range as the concussion of gas to the side of the barrel is pretty bad. -
Below are pics of my most recent project. I finally got a couple boxes from Aim Surplus and Getgear.us in the mail this week to finish her off. Been waiting on the brown truck all week...lol The rifle started out as a new DPMS AP4 model LR-308. I have been trying some different .308 rifles for the past year and have gone back to the DPMS platform. The first one I had was a Tac-20 that I built. I thought I could find something better, however I realized over time that it was a great rifle and I wanted to go back to that platform. The AP4 build was something that I've wanted to do for a while. I wanted to build a carbine .308 that could stretch out 400-500 yards if needed. I won't be shooting any further, if that far very often, so I decided the 16" barrel would be fine for what I needed. The lower and upper were disassembled and coated in Coyote Tan Brownell's Aluma-hyde. This matches Magpul FDE near perfectly with only a slightly darker shade noticable in the sun. I also painted the scope, barrel, and the buffer tube. The Troy rail came all black, so I taped off the rails and painted the areas between the rails to continue with the FDE theme. The Aluma-hyde has worked well for me on several guns...as long as you bake and cure it properly it has proven to be very durable. The rifle has the following parts... Magpul ACS stock Magpul MIAD grip Magpul AFG forward grip GG&G Bipod Troy 13.8 MRF Free Floating Battlerail (uses a Troy barrel nut to mount too, doesn't touch anywhere else...kind of a neat setup and it's rock solid) Troy low profile gas block Sightmark 8.5-25x50 scope with sunshade Scope mounted with a Burris P.E.P.R. mount (I run these on all my AR platform rifles...love em') Primary Weapons Systems FSC-30 muzzle brake/ compensator (I run these comps on all my 5.56 rifles also...fantastic brakes) I have a few things to add like an extended tactical charging handle latch and a sling attachment system for the sling I have for it. First Tac 20 rifle in snakeskin camo: Somewhat similar build, but a heck of a big gun to tote around. Shot great though. How the AP4 came out of the box: Pics of the completed build: The sun shows some of the difference in shades of tan, but the camera makes it worse.

The only run-in with KPD in my 4 years of living here was one day on my bike.... I was driving on I-40 between Cedar Bluff and Lovell Road. I was doing 55-60mph in the left lane while cars were all over my ass. It was heavy traffic as all lanes were full around me. There was a bike cop sitting under the Pellisippi overpass. I was all the way over in the left lane going no faster than the slowest car while a semi-truck was passing me on the right. I was getting off at Lovell Rd, so I began to merge over one lane at a time. I had just merged into the exit lane for Lovell Road when the bike cop appeared right next to me...in my lane! I was startled to say the least as he almost swerved into me and motioned for me to pull over. I of course complied, although I knew I was doing nothing wrong. He said he stopped me because my tags were improperly displayed. I had them mounted under the tail of my bike in plain view. He said he stopped me because a black motorcycle ran from him a few days ago. I told him that it was the first time I had been in the area in several weeks. He then started in on me about my tags. How in the world he could possibly tell that my tags weren't at a 90 degree angle from the other side of 4 lanes of congested traffic I have no idea. I told him I bought the bike this way and had no idea it was improper. You could stand a few feet behind the bike and see them plain as day. I was nice about it, even though the stop was complete b.s. as he had no probable cause to do so. I told him I would be glad to fix the tags and had a mount at home that would work. He never really explained what was wrong with my tags the way they were except that they weren't visible enough. Once again they were in plain sight...lol He said he would "let me off" on the tags because I didn't argue with him about it. Now, how many black motorcycles do you think there are on the road....let alone in Knoxville. This guy cherry-picked me out of a crowd and profiled me just because I was on a bike. I've seen stupid riders act up on bikes around town, but I always rode safe (except on U.S. 129 ). He had no reason to pull me over, and definitely no reason to sneak up on me and swerve into my lane, almost running me onto the shoulder. I lost a lot of respect for the KPD after this incident. I never fixed my tags and never had another issue.

If you haven't had a ticket in the last few years...4 I think....just tell the judge you would like to plead guilty and ask if you can go to traffic school. Hopefully he'll be nice about it and let you do traffic school instead of the ticket and points on your record (plus insurance issues). Definately don't call your insurance company and tell them you got a ticket....that's not good advice...lol Most insurance companies will run an NVR yearly, or when a change in the policy is made...maybe not for a couple years sometimes, so you're better off just waiting to see if they do anything to your rates then you are telling them you got a ticket. On another note, the speed limit in Knoxville is rediculus anyway. The semi-trucks will literally run you off the road if you don't at least do 10mph over. I try to drive 55-60 and stay in the right lane, but it's difficult to even do that sometimes. I don't understand how the cops can feel good about writing people tickets when the semi trucks are barreling down the road doing 10-20mph over or more and have no regard for the speed limit or how close they get to your bumper. After the Papermill exit, I-640, and on the other side of Strawberry Plains should be 70mph. The 55 crap is less safe due to the drastic difference in driving styles on the roads and those who want to adhere to the 55mph, and those who think 70 is fine....it would be much safer if the speed limits were at least 65 if not 70 once you get out of downtown.

Are you guys going to be at the Knoxville show this weekend? I have bought all my reloading stuff from you guys...probably spent $700-800 in the last two months between Knoxville shows and Nashville.....lol I picked up 1k 62gr bullets and 1k primers at the show in Nashville. I talked to one guy....maybe you, about some military surplus powder that was equal to H335. I'm planning on picking up 8lbs of that this weekend if you guys are going to be there.

Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me it looks like a Leupold Mark 4.

"Official" East Tn TGO Fall "Meet & Shoot"
Kenstaroni replied to Bubbatn's topic in Events and Gatherings
That would probably be the easiest thing. I'll bring my own grub. If others want to work something else out with the "chef" then by all means that's between you guys. +1 for Saturday. -
The Reloader's Bench in Mt. Juliet TN carries some different kinds...usually about $0.10 per case. I've been buying some from a reloading company out of Ashland City, TN that goes to all the gun shows. Lake City processed brass has been running $89.00 per 1k. They are supposed to have some new, already primed brass for $135 per 1k at the show this weekend in Knoxville.

I like your style... -
He's really pretty with a lot of orange in his coat instead of just brown. Me and the Ms. had to beg the breeder to let us have him....lol He's a handful, but I've never regretted getting him at all. He's so entertaining it's well worth putting up with the little stuff he does wrong.

My 12 year old lab named Sandy....I've had her since she was 9 weeks old. Great dog, loyal, smart, and protective.....She loves to hike and I can barely keep up with her...lol About 30 minutes after this picture was taken a couple had a pit bull loose in a parking lot off the trail. Of course it came straight at Sandy and immediately attacked her. Usually I have my gun on my hip, but since it was February and 25 degrees outside I didn't expect to run into anyone. She was leashed at the time and still had her pack on. After repeated kicks to the head of the pitbull by me he finally backed off. She had blood all over her face and I thought for sure she was hurt. After wiping her off she didn't have a scratch on her...all the blood was from the pit. I couldn't believe a 12 year old lab with 15lbs of pack on her wooped the pit. Needless to say I gave the owner a nice earful...he's lucky the dog backed off as I had my pack on the ground about to pull out the Glock and take care of it. 1 year old AKC Boxer named Balboa. This guy is a knucklehead for sure. Smart dog and as sweet as they come....he's just curious about everything and extremely athletic. Gotta watch him 24/7, but some of the stuff he does is so funny it's well worth it.

I heard that DPMS is 160,000 rifles behind right now....1 year on factory built rifles and 2 year waiting list on custom built guns....you would think they would consider investing in some more manufacturing capabilities...lol Not sure I'd wait that long for a DPMS....they are decent guns sure, but you could build something comparable in much shorter time. I do have a DPMS LR-308 AP4 that I love...I only waited 5 minutes while the background check went through for it

I run a Sightmark 1.5-5x30 scope on one rifle and a Millet DMS-1 1-4x24 scope on another. Both are great for close range and 100-150 yards. I like the Millet doughnut reticle a little better (plus it's illuminated if you want), but the Sightmark has a huge field of view and great eye relief. Mount either one in a Burris P.E.P.R. mount and you'll be happy. The PEPR mount's are excellent for AR's and allow you to get a flip up rear sight tucked underneath if you wish. Good luck!

I'm down for throwing in a few bucks or bringing my own meat....just let me know what the verdict is and count me in! -
I'm lucky enough to have 115 acres outside of Franklin, TN. Me and some friends were there last weekend doing quite a bit of shooting. Nothing like having a truely "private" range to go to. There's a place in Norris, TN near Knoxville that I usually shoot at because its pretty good and for the most part people are pretty responsible. I don't go on Saturday's though because it's too crowded. I have heard of people shooting at the 50 yard target while people were hanging targets down range, however the worst I've seen is a guy going out in front of the line to reset a target on the ground, and some guy with an AK shooting the target backstop posts. I would love to organize a TGO shoot there on my land, but is jointly owned with some of my aunts and uncles, and due to the liability issue I just can't bring people out there that I don't trust not to sue me...lol If I can get an insurance policy put together and have people fill out waivers I might be able to do it someday, but for now I only have people out there that I grew up with and trust not to come after me if there is an accident.

Oh man....you got me excited! I should have known that it sounded too good to be true.

It's closed until the 4th I believe. I stopped by two days ago and the guy at the police station said it would re-open on the 4th. It will close again in November at the start of muzzleloader season. Can't remember the dates of the top of my head though. At least you didn't pack up and drive out there like I did not knowing it was closed...lol

I think it will be a cold day in hell before this country elects her....the crappy thing is she has too much power already.

I've had one. It will definately shoot sub MOA. Mine shot about 1/2 MOA with 168gr hand loads.

Malwarebytes is on my computer already. It won't load...hour glass comes one for a couple seconds and that's it. This is something that other people had a similar problem with when dealing with the redirect virus...it prevents some malware removal software from opening....I tried it in safe mode too with no luck. AVG doesn't pick it up. I'll try the antivirus you have recommended and see if I have any luck.

I've gotten a Google Redirect Virus ever since the site came up harmful. Still can't get it off my computer. I downloaded Firefox and it worked fine for a day until I searched for TGO and clicked on the link. Now Firefox also has a redirect virus that sends me to random sights when I click search links.

According to Glenn Beck our average voter turn out is 38%.....the highest ever was around 60% in the 1960's. Iraq's first elections drew 95%!....and that was at the threat of being shot by radicals while going to the booths. We can all make a stand this November not just by voting conservative, but by showing up to vote at all. If we can get the numbers up to 60% again, I think the government will take note. I can't wait for November....then only 2 more years till this charade is over. I really hope O'Donnell wins in Deleware...that will be a huge slap in the face to the Democrats. I look forward to the day when we have a Tea Party party in the government to rival the Republicans and Democrats. The democrats call them "activists"....while that has a negative connotation to it, I think it's great. We need people who are going to act and get things done, not politicians who are going to sign bills they don't read and do what's best for their wallets. Obama wears me out with the calls to stop spending and how we need more taxes to pay for the wars Bush started....we'll buddy, spending un-precedented amounts of money then saying we need more taxes to pay for your spending just doesn't do it for me.

AMEN!!! GET OUT AND VOTE!!!!

I would steer clear of a 4 season. It might be nice in the winter, but way too hot in the summer. Buy one that is mesh and has a rainfly that goes over the entire tent. This way you can stake out the rainfly in the summer and get a nice breeze in the tent, or let it hang or stake it close to the tent to hold in heat. In the climate we have here in TN a 3 season and a good 20 degree bag are plenty sufficent. I've slept in 20 degree weather with nothing but a cold nose as I was wrapped in a mummy bag. In October you may not need but a 50 degree bag, just depends on the night time temps. Some good tents are....Big Agnes, MSR, Mountain Hardware,...maybe Northface but I think there are better choices in the other brands. Big Agnes is my favorite. They make a Seedhouse 2 Ultra Light tent that is very roomy, light weight, and durable. I have the Seedhouse 1 and me an my girl can both fit in it. I'm 6'4" and I fit fine. Good luck!

My land is well off the beaten path so no issues with neighbors. It's off a private road that's gated, so anyone who wanted to come see what was going on would have to first tresspass onto the road through the gate, then tresspass again through the gate at the property. If they did that they would not be "welcomed" by me...lol I am hopefully moving back to Nashville in the next couple months so I can't wait to have my private shooting range back. I have a small cabin with a wood burning stove which makes a great place to camp out and is awesome for Deer season as I can just walk out of the cabin and hop in a deer stand.
