  1. I've never competed in anything like this before but I'm up for trying...you can count on me to be there and I'll be eating lunch there as well. Is this a "weather permitting" event, meaning, will this be officially canceled if the weather turns out to be rainy/thunderstorms, etc. and if so, how will that be communicated? I'm somewhat familiar with MCSC (it's a great facility); in fact, I'm taking my car club there for a skeet shoot on April 10th! http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/competitive-shooting-sports/36173-first-annual-spring-cruise-pigeon-shoot.html
  2. Hi everyone! I’m not sure if this is the best location for this post or not but I just want to give a public “thank you†to Sig Sauer. Early this month I participated in my first IDPA match with MCTS; it was a blast (although not the actually subject of this post)…when I went to clean my P220 the next day I found that I had lost a grip screw and washer. While not exactly a critical component, I’m pretty anal retentive about such things so I rushed to the internet to order a replacement. Sig Sauer’s website listed both the grip screws and washers for sale along with a package of most often requested replacement parts that included the grip screws but it listed both the grip screws alone as well as the package as temporality out of stock. I waited a few days…same story. I then started looking around at suppliers that claim to carry Sig parts, same story…everybody was out of stock! Finally, I called Sig Sauer customer service and the very helpful gentlemen explained that although the website showed them out of stock, his inventory showed a couple of packages of grip screws as available…I gave him my CC info and address and made the purchase (the shipping was almost double what the actual cost of the item was going to be). Last night, I get home and a package of screws and washers was there waiting for me, delivered by FedEx…I open the package, look at the receipt and NO CHAGE for either the item itself or the shipping! On the one hand, I am not really that surprised as I’ve always believed that the gun community (both individuals and the manufacturing industry that makes all our goodies) are among the best group of folks to be found anywhere. On the other hand, getting that kind of customer service from any company today is, unfortunately, not something most of us have come to expect and I think that when it does happen, the company deserves to be noted for it. So, thanks Sig Sauer, both for making such quality firearms as well as for such great customer service!
  3. I'll have to check...I though the rebate was over but I may be wrong about that.
  4. I've pretty much decided what I'm interested in, at least as a first rifle purchase and I've posted in the "Wanted to Buy" section. I'd invite any comments, good or bad about my three choices. my thread is here: http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/want-buy/37288-wtb-sig556-fhn-fs-2000-highend-ar15.html#post486429 My first choice is a Sig 556 (in SWAT Classic or SWAT Patrol configuration) followed very closely by an FNH FS2000 (Standard carbine or Tactical Black). A definite "third" choice would be a high-end AR15. I may, of course, have to buy retail to get what I want but I figure it can't hurt to try and find someone who has one they are wiling to sell for a fair price!
  5. I appreciate all the feedback I've gotten...not sure which way to go yet but I appreciate the advice! I do think I'm leaning toward the 223/556 chambering. I realize that effectiveness, especially at long range, is decreased compared to the more powerful rifle cartridges but I am seeing a rifle purchase, at least an initial one, as a home defense weapon and my thoughts are that the 223/556 is both sufficient and safer for such use and certainly more so than any of my handguns or shotguns that I currently own. That said, I'm also looking at the FN FS2000 (there is a slightly used one for sale on the board)...more money than I was initially thinking of spending although I had a chance to examine one/hold one closely just last night and it was very comfortable (and much lighter weight than I expected). In any case...I've still got a lot of homework to do but I appreciate everyone's input!
  6. I've owned Mossbergs and Remmingtons (currently own a Mossberg 930 and a Benelli Super Nova tactical both set up for home defense). You can't really go wrong with wither brand; they are both great shotguns for the money....my only complaint with the Mossberg is the placement of the safety; it's never been "comfortable" for me.
  7. I realize I’m very lat to the thread but I thought I’d add my thoughts. Police and military who “clear houses” go through hours and hours of training to do so and even then, I’d suggest that it takes experience to really become proficient and safe clearing a house/building. The chance that ANY essentially untrained individual could clear his own house proficiently and safely are virtually nil. I would even go so far as to suggest that a trained LEO, when it’s his home possibly having been invaded, is a fool to try and clear his own house. Further consideration, spouse, children, pets…if you are truly concerned with their safety; isn’t it better to have them gathered in one “safe room/spot” than for you to play Tarzan and go room to room clearing your house? In my opinion, if you truly believe someone has broken into your home, the safest thing you can do is to have a plan and follow it which should include everybody in the house getting to a safe place and then staying there while you use your spare cell phone (the one you keep on the nightstand and/or with your home defense shotgun/pistol/carbine) and call the police. If the bad guys tries to enter your safe room/space and you have to engage them then engage them but the best way to win a gunfight is to not have to have one.
  8. Despite the fact that getting down and (especially) up with a weak knee is a bi**h I had a great time on the 6th and definetly plan to be back for more. Unfortunately, third Saturdays are drill Saturdays for me so I can't come this time around. I hope (hint, hint) that you guys will occasionally mix up the shotgun events so that you do some on first Saturdays now and then as I would really like to get my hove defense shotgun out and get some time in with it. Hope you guys have a great time this Saturday...it looks like the weather will be good!
  9. That's an interesting suggesting and one that, frankly, I hadn't considered...Thanks!
  10. Thanks for all the info! You've given me a lot to consider...I appreciate it! An M1 had been on my wish list for a long, long time but as I've become more familiar with the AR15 platform I've found less and less reason to go that direction.
  11. I would prefer keeping the basic rifle under $1,500 but could go up to as much as $2,500.
  12. Hello everyone, I am about to embark on some brand new territory for me which is the purchase of a rifle. While I have several handguns and shotguns, I’ve come to the conclusion that to really be prepared for most contingencies, a rifle is something needed and something I’m missing. While not set is stone, I’ve pretty much settled on the AR15 platform – my problem is that I’ve never personally owned a rifle before, let alone an AR. My only real rifle experience came from military service (I’ve logged quite a lot of rounds through an M1 and an M14) but that’s it. I won’t say money is no object but I do want to get the best “return†for the money spent. I’m looking for recommendations on manufacturers/models and chambering. I’d like a chambering that, in times of crisis, won’t be impossible to find. Any help…advice…pointed toward available resources, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  13. They do have a website (Indoor Shooting Range Firearms & Concealed Carry Permit Classes - Murfreesboro, TN - On Target Indoor Gun Range ) and if you decide to make the trip over let me know and I'll meet you there (I'm there about once a week anyway) and I can bring two or three of my guns so you won't have to rent those models!
  14. First of all, welcome to the world of Firearms...whether looked at as just a hobby or a life necessity (for personal protection) or both I think you'll find your investment of time extremely worthwhile and the people you'll meet along the way are some of the most decent, honest folks around and good people to know; period. I know it's of no specific help to you but my local indoor range here in Murfreesboro does rent quite a selection of guns; whether there are any ranges withing a reasonable distance to you that do I don't know but I wouldn't be all that surprised if there is some that do. I would suspect, however, that your best chance of finding such a range is going to be in a fairly heavily populated area (and the more heavily populated/more ranges the more likely you'll be to find such a range). Personally; I think any recommendation from a stranger, no matter how well intentioned, about what model/type of gun to start with would be premature and likely not very helpful - I have quite a few handguns and all but one is an autoloader and except for my one revolver and one of the autoloaders, they are all 45ACP but that's what I like and am comfortable with. You may be entirely different and even an inexpensive weapon can be quite expensive if you you buy it and decide you don't like it/won't shoot it and if you are planning on eventually carrying a weapon for personal protection then buying seething you'll feel comfortable carrying and can operate safely and accurately become even more critical. In other words...be patient...make friends in the gun community and then make an informed decision.
  15. I've never been a big fan of Starbuck's coffee and I'll likely never be a big customer but I am going to make sure they get some of my coffee money now and then.
  16. I too want to echo my compliments...first time shooting in any kind of competitive event and everybody I met was welcoming and helpful...I had a great time! Robert (Bob)
  17. I love to do this but I have a holster/mag carrier problem. My usual carry weapon and the one I'd like to use for this would be my Sig P220...I have three magazines but the only holsters I have for it are two different Galco molded leather OWB (one is a paddle holster and the other is a belt holster); same for the double mag carrier I have (which is currently on order form Galco which I hope will be here this week).
  18. The First Annual Spring Cruise and (clay) Pigeon Shoot! Sponsored by the Middle Tennessee Z Club Middle Tennessee Z Club with much appreciated help from the Montgomery Shooting Complex! CARS, FOOD, FRIENDS & SHOTGUNS; Enough Said! I think all of us are ready for spring and whether you’ve got a special “baby“ sitting in your garage or a daily driver you love and appreciate, I’m sure you are eager for some warm weather and a chance to enjoy your ride - this is a perfect excuse to do just that (yes, this is being put together by the Middle Tennessee Z Club; representing all generations of the Datsun/Nissan Z sports car, but if you love cars and driving and enjoy the camaraderie of some friendly competitive shooting this is an event you’ll enjoy. Whether you are an experienced clay target shooter or have never shot a shotgun and whether you are a guy or a gal, you can have a lot of fun at this event – no one needs to feel “left out†and there will be some basic instruction for those who are totally new to the world of clay pigeon shooting. Of course, you can bring your own shotgun but for those who need it, appropriate shotguns will be available for loan; ammunition and other items available for sale. WHEN: Saturday, April 10, 2010 WHERE: Montgomery County Shooting Complex (Montgomery County Shooting Complex ) PLEASE RSVP! We must have a headcount so the complex can properly prepare for us (and there is a maximum number of shooters that the complex can handle) so please RSVP with your name and telephone number to Bob Armentrout either by email at RBArmentrout1954@hotmail.com or by PM here. SCHEDULE: We’ll meet at Bob Evan’s Restaurant at Opryland/Music City Drive (200 Rudy Circle). If you want to have breakfast I’d plan to arrive no later than 9AM. Otherwise, plan to get there about 9:50AM as we’ll leave Bob Evan’s at 10AM sharp. Cruising for about an hour and a half on back roads to arrive in the Clarksville area at about 11:30. We’ll be at the Clarksville stop (specific spot TBD) from about 11:30 until about 12:15 – this will give you a chance to grab something to eat and/or some gasoline for those who need it as well as a chance for folks to join up with us there. We’ll leave Clarksville about 12:15 and spend about another half-hour traveling to the Montgomery County Shooting Complex )4201 Southside Road; Southside, TN 37171). Our afternoon of shooting will be from about 1PM until about 4PM Trophies will be awarded for “Best Shooter†of the day and for “Least Threatening to Clay Pigeons†(both based on hit/miss count). After our shoot; we’ll head back to Nashville and we’ll stop at a watering hole (location TBD) for food, beverages and likely a few tall stories about how the wind shifted their pigeon and made them miss!). COSTS: Range fee: $5.50 Fee per Round of American Skeet: $5.00 (we’ll likely get in three rounds) Ammunition: You’ll need one box of 25 rounds per round of skeet; they sell on site for $7.00/box or, of course, you can bring your own. Gun Rental: NO CHARGE! The complex is COMPING our gun rental (usually $20/gun) for those who need one. Assuming three rounds of skeet total cost will be approximately $42.00 WEATHER: Hopefully, we'll have a perfect spring day but should the weather not cooperate we will cancel (another reason why to RSVP so the we can update you with any late changes!). Check back here for more updates as they become available and please feel free to ask any questions. Thanks! For background; see: http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/competitive-shooting-sports/34019-want-organize-event-need-some-help-suggestions.html -------------------- ROUTE DETAILS -------------------- Our cruise from Nashville to the shooting complex will be on good, two-lane roads which should provide a pleasant drive. After leaving the metro Nashville area we’ll basically stay on Route 41 to Clarksville then Route 48 as we leave Clarksville until we arrive at the shooting complex. The return cruise back to the Cool Springs area will be a LOT more challenging and interesting with some very enjoyable and exceptional back roads and scenery…some of these roads, especially early in the return trip are a bit rough but nothing to worry about and actually in better shape than some of the roads around The Dragon that we all love so much! Below are the details of the route to/from Starting Point to Montgomery County Shooting Complex: From the parking lot of Bob Evan’s restaurant, turn LEFT out of the parking lot Almost immediately turn RIGHT onto Music Valley Drive Go to the end of the road and, at the traffic light, turn LEFT onto Mcgavock Pike From Mcgavock Pike, turn LEFT and take the onramp to Briley Parkway From Briley Parkway, we’ll take Exit No 14A onto Gallatin Pike/Route 31E Stay on Gallatin Pike until we reach Old Hickory Blvd Turn LEFT onto Old Hickory Blvd (5.5 into the cruise) Shortly after we turn onto Old Hickory Blvd, is Cornerstone Church (on the Right) – if we need to do so, we’ll stop here and wait for anyone who got caught in traffic. Stay on Old Hickory for about 1.4 miles crossing under I-24 and crossing Dickerson Pike. Turn RIGHT onto Whites Creek Pike (6.9 miles into cruise) Turn LEFT onto Eatons Creek Road Turn RIGHT onto Old Clarksville Pike (18 miles into cruise) Turn RIGHT onto Clarksville Pike/route 41 (18.9 miles into cruise) Pass through Pleasant View (CAUTION – SPEED TRAP) (26 miles into cruise) Near Clarksville, turn LEFT onto 41A Bypass (44.5 miles into cruise) We’ll follow 41A Bypass all the way to McGregor Park (on the Left) 52 miles into our cruise. Stopping Point in Clarksville: McGregor Park is part of Clarksville’s Riverwalk area and will be our stopping point in Clarksville and the point at which anyone joining us from the Clarksville area can join up. There are a number of restaurants (some within easy walking distance) and gasoline stations nearby for anyone who wants a quick lunch/needs to fill-up. We should arrive here at about 11:30AM and we’ll plan to leave no later than 12:15PM for the final leg of the cruise to the shooting complex. Clarksville to Shooting Complex: Leaving McGregor Park; we’ll turn RIGHT onto 41A Bypass. Bear slightly RIGHT onto 48/South 13 to follow the river Where 13 and 14 split, bear RIGHT to stay on 48 Shortly after the split, turn LEFT onto Southside Road (63.5 miles into the cruise) We’ll stay on Southside Road until we reach the Montgomery County Shooting Complex (69.4 miles into the cruise). Approximate travel time to our stopping point in Clarksville is 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic and then another 20-30 minutes from Clarksville to the shooting complex. Return Trip - Montgomery County Shooting Complex to Cool Springs Brewery (formerly Guido’s) Leaving the shooting complex; turn LEFT back onto Southside Road Go 1.7 miles and turn LEFT onto Chapel Hill Road Pass through Southside, Tennessee continuing on Chapel Hill Road Turn LEFT onto Bowker Road (8.6 miles into cruise) Bear LEFT (9.6 miles into cruise) Bear RIGHT (11.2 miles into cruise) Turn LEFT onto Highway 49E (15.5 miles into cruise) Turn RIGHT onto River Road/249 S (22.8 miles into cruise) Bear Right onto River Road Pike (37.7 miles into cruise) Where 249/251 meet/split; bear LEFT onto Old Hickory Blvd/251 S (38.7 miles into cruise) NOTE: You will have access to I40 from Old Hickory at about 39.6 miles into the cruise Stay on Old Hickory until we reach Highway 100 Turn LEFT onto Highway 100 (43.4 miles into cruise) Turn RIGHT onto Old Hickory Blvd (44.0 miles into cruise) Turn RIGHT onto Hillsboro Pike/431 South (46.7 miles into cruise) Turn LEFT onto Mack Hatcher Parkway (54.4 miles into cruise) Turn LEFT onto Cool Springs Blvd Turn RIGHT onto Frazier Drive. We’ll end at 600 Frazier Drive (58 miles into cruise) Approximate travel time for the return cruise is 1.5 hours Those who want to go directly home as quickly as possible after the shoot may want to backtrack to I-24. Another option is to cruise together until we have access to I-40 (about 39 miles into the cruise back) at which point, those wanting to get home can break off there. In fact, we have the option as a group to effectively end the “cruise†at I-40 and from there, seek the faster route to our stopping point (Cool Springs Brewery) – the roads beyond the 39 mile mark are nice but not as much fun as the roads up ‘till that point!
  19. I'd love to take the course but I have drill on the third Saturday of each month! Maybe next time!
  20. Isn't there an airport in virtually every county Including Rutherford)???
  21. If you are talking about where the gun show was located last month than that's a lousy building...$25 would be a more appropriate to what it's worth than $25,000!
  22. Not a bad idea...we've got a beautiful new taxpayer funded "conference center" (as well as some other facilities) here and I have a feeling that they have a LOT of open dates!
  23. I thought Winchester was a bit out of the way although it obviously wasn't "too" far out of the way as I did go and overall, thought it was a very good event and would have gone to the March event in the Winchester location. For what it's worth, my recommendation as you look for a different city/venue is to look for something that is clean and well lighted with a decent parking lot...I know you've got to be concerned with your overhead but one of things I like least about gun shows in general is the type of buildings they are generally located in which seem to be, for lack of a better description, "distressed property". Anything to break that "trend" would be a step in the right direction in my always humble opinion.
