  1. A buddy of mine just told me about the article in the Knox News Sentinel about one of the Maxim machine guns Sgt. York captured being at a reception at the Tennessee Theater 24 Jan as part of a fundraiser to support setting up a full display at the Museum of Appalachia. The weapon will be there and they're showing the Gary Cooper Sgt. York movie. Gotta love that! I think I'll have to dip into the gun fund and attend (it should be tax deductible also!). Here's the link to the article in the paper that had some great pictures - York's legacy comes to East Tennessee Knoxville News Sentinel
  2. The USMC Fighting/Utility Knife is a good knife, but there are better for the money (even within the KaBar line). If you can't freehand sharpen with stones get one of the various ceramic sticks held in a "V" systems out there (Gatco, Spyderco, etc).
  3. We should wear plugs AND muffs when shooting. Electronic muffs and plugs are the ideal combination since you can hear conversations and still get greater protection than one or the other alone. Remember that small arms fire averages 140 dB while plugs and muffs combined only provide a noise reduction rating equivalent to 5 dB more than the highest rating of either. 30+30 is only effectively 35 due to the different wavelengths muffs and plugs are most effective for.

    Knives

Small Chris Reeves Sebenza and a SAK Farmer, but I've been known to carry others at times. If you get the opportunity to attend one of the several "hammer-ins" that take place around the state you should set time aside to do so. You'll learn a lot, meet some amazingly talented and skilled people and the "iron in the hat" raffle can give you the chance to get your hands on a nice custom knife for next to nothing.

Welcome from OR/Knox A list of specific places you're allowed to carry wouldn't be practical to maintain. Just think how many McDonald's restaurants there are to gauge how big the list would be and how it might be constantly changing. Even a list of places in TN that don't allow carry would be difficult to keep up with.
  7. Welcome from OR/Knox.
  8. The hold only applies to executive orders and only on those executive orders that have not gone into effect. The process for reversing an executive order that is in effect is more involved. The "national parks carry" rule was not an executive order and the decision went into effect on Jan. 9.

  13. Tom's putting on the 3-gun shoot this Sunday at ORSA. http://www.orsamultigun.com/ Shooters,We're on rain, snow or shine this Sunday at 1 PM EST. (Try to show up by 12:30) Stages are on the website as usual (http://www.orsamultigun.com). Pre-registration is appreciated. We're also trying a new rifle target to make things a little more challenging. The "dots" are numbered 2" circles on a sheet of paper. Instead of pasting over these targets, each shooter will be given their dot targets at registration along with their score sheet and will just staple their target to the cardboard when it's their turn to shoot. As you can see from the stage descriptions online, we'll be shooting some of these at very close range and some as far away as possible (about 25-30 yrds) so make sure you've got your rifle zeroed before you come. FTN penalties will typically be lower for these than for standard IPSC targets. Also, I'd like your opinions on a potential change to the match that gives shooters a "mulligan" and lets them reshoot a stage. Email me directly or discuss in this forum: http://orsaidpa.com/discussion/index.php?topic=71.0 Finally, for the new or future ORSA club members looking for a sponsor, don't forget to bring your paper for a member to sign! warm regards, -tom
  14. If Pincus is just using CCA's facilities to conduct the training then why would CCA be the controlling factor in taking or not taking the course if Pincus's training is considered valid and valuable?

    Airsoft

There are benefits for FOF and near contact shoot and move training, but in my opinion they wouldn't have any benefit in marksmanship training due to the radically different ballistics.
  16. Looks like Coal Creek Armory has worked it out for Rob Pincus to come and conduct a three day handgun course in August.
  17. While I'd prefer that any of us not to even be required to have carry permits I'm glad my experience with renewing mine yesterday was about as pleasant as could be hoped for. My renewal form came in the mail thirty days before the expiration of my handgun carry permit. I filled it out in a few minutes at my office in OR and then drove 10 minutes after work to the driver testing center in Clinton. I picked Clinton instead of West Knox because they're a quieter station. I arrived 20 minutes before they were scheduled to close, walked into the door to be greeted by the clerk and was asked what they could do for me. "Carry permit renewal", I said and she replied with a smile, "Come on up". She accepted my form, asked a couple of questions verifying my place of birth and current address, checked my current permit to verify I was who I claimed to be and noted I had left a spot blank and checked the box for me. I handed over my $50 renewal fee. "I don't mind the $50, but I know people that can't afford the initial fee and classes.", I said. She replied, "I know it's tough, but the state pays $90 to the company that does the background checks." (I didn't know that and have to wonder why it is so high.) Ten steps down the counter to snap a new ID picture. "Bureaucrats! They insist you have to have a new picture for renewals now", she laughed. She handed me a copy of the form with a code on it and told me to keep it until my new permit showed up in the mail, and "Just in case Nashville screws up". I was in and out in under 5 minutes.
  18. I looked at the WBIR maps and downloaded the kml file and ran it on Google Earth. All it shows is the same census tract based information, population, # of HCP holders in the census tract, average income in the census tract, guesstimation on homeownership. Nothing more detailed than that. There were several people on the WBIR comment thread that served as an embarrassment to RKBA advocacy. They endlessly claimed that WBIR made the names/addresses of HCP holders available in the data (they didn't, but the truth doesn't deter these nutjobs). The chief pot stirrer ended up recanting and apologizing.
  19. J Smith is right on target! It is a safety measure to ensure some irresponsible individual doesn't put the rest of us at risk by playing with a loaded gun. That includes HCP holders as well.
  20. I made a quick trip to the show on Sat. and picked up a P-13 for $600 from a fellow walking around. It only had one magazine, but I've got P-13 mags so that wasn't a problem. I also picked up a double AR survival kit from Garry at J&T (springs, pings, etc.). Found out they've bought Ace stocks recently. That's good news to me. Had my chat with Ralph Simpson. Taunted Dan and Keith at VOW. Talked to Bill of TNGuns about the new Scorpion semi pistols they've just brought in (gotta have me one). I showed a new auto knife to a couple of dealers who expressed some interest. The run is going to limited to less than 800 pieces and dealer price on it is reasonable. ATS-34 4 inch blade coated in TiCN. Nice knife. My buddy, Paul, picked up a beautiful honest to Oden Swede Mauser carbine. Nearly perfect gun. With the bayo! Another buddy picked up a Predator built M4gery with Eotech and Surefire light forend for almost the price of the light and sight from a guy walking in the door. I didn't get back up there Sunday what with all the demands on time. Paul did and ended up picking up an ultralight stock, ultralight fluted barrel and a nice enough on it's own 10-22 to put it all together to make a feather weight dream shooter that feels like it's less than half the weight of a lw 1-22. I spent my late afternoon teaching my Sifu handgun disarms. Now my wrist and back are sore.
  21. I helped VOW load in last night and I didn't see any junk. Looked to be a good show (in spite of the guy with the 4-wheeler junk). I intend to go, but don't know when now. Regardless, if you see a guy in an Aloha shirt, shorts that's wearing lime green Crocs, that'll be me.
  22. I'll return your "Welcome" and raise you a Howdy!
  23. The table dealers don't usually have great prices, but you can find deals FTF with folks looking to trade or sell what they've brought. You can occasionally find a deal on milsurps and parts. RK bought out Holloway a while back so all the gun shows in Kvile are RK shows (KEC or Jacobs Bldg.). The little Loudon show at the Armory is a Smokey Mtn. Gun Collectors Society show and there's no junk there. Parking is free at all of them. I won't be set up at the show this weekend, but I should be there early Saturday morning for a while.
  24. Welcome.
  25. Welcome. I work in OR so if you want to head to ORSA some time for plinking let me know.
