  1.   http://www.newschannel5.com/story/24811452/clarksville-student-suspended-for-knife-in-fathers-car   Here's the Board of Education and all but one have email addresses.  https://www.cmcss.net/aboutus/schoolboard.aspx   Here's the email I sent to each of them individually -
  2. Doug,   I doubt that information on the types of knives used in crimes would even be available without being able to see evidence photos so the knives could be accurately classified (if then).  That makes it effectively impossible to conduct a meaningful study.   As pointed out there are so few knife crimes in TN that to try to claim there's a threat is statistically indefensible (although fear mongers don't need facts).
  3. Details on the type of knife used aren't available just as details on the type of rifle or pistol used aren't.  All that I've ever found in years of studying this issue is anecdotes from LEOs and EMTs talking about how the vast majority of knives used in crimes are relatively inexpensive disposable kitchen/steak knives.  That makes sense considering a $100 switchblade isn't going to used for a throw away weapon and the cheapest thing a criminal can get their hands on is a kitchen knife filched from Wal/K Mart.
  4.     Why give up until we have to?  The bill would had passed intact, preemption, switchblade, and length, in the Senate and would have passed last year in the House if it hadn't been subverted right before getting to the floor of the House.  That last hurdle where the Sheriff's association stabbed it in the back caused it to have switchblade and length provisions removed to pass preemption.  This year the Sheriff's association has participated in crafting the language of the proposed legislation and won't impede it.  So why quit before any serious opposition has been mounted?  Why cave before pushed?
  5. I'm sure most of us have knives longer than 4", some even longer than the old 7" length limit , but we have several battles ahead to get through the various House and Senate committees before we can declare victory.  :usa:   I picked up a 5.5" Jesse Davis damascus and box elder burl with a blade like a small seax.
  6.     That's too much of an understatement.  I've been involved in the American Knife and Tool Institute and Knife Rights as well as local efforts in TN.  There is as close to zero a chance as measurable that this legislation would be conceived or moving through in TN without this specific organization being the sharp point of the spear on our rights with respect to knives.   Also, KR isn't a lobbyist organization. They're first and foremost an advocacy organization headed by a dedicated individual who with the help of a few others nationally and employing a lobbyist who is joined in common cause is working with those of us in TN to change these absurd laws that serve no more a valid purpose than the restrictions on our right to possess and carry firearms.
  7.   And every one of those is a battleground that can decide this struggle.  Remember it was in a House committee last year that this bill had to be stripped of blade length and switchblade repeal so preemption could move forward.  Every subcommittee and committee decides your fate so we've got to press to get this one won.
  8. Got this from KR and thought everyone would want to jump in and help.    Tennessee Switchblade Ban Repeal Bill HOUSE Comm Hearing on Tuesday - CALL/EMAIL TODAY!   The House Criminal Justice Subcommittee will hear HB1883 on Tuesday, February 18.With the holiday, we need you to EMAIL or CALL TODAY! HB1883 is the companion bill to SB1771 and would repeal the antiquated ban on switchblade (automatic) knives and possession of knives over four inches in length "with intent to go armed," a vague law subject to abuse.   If you live, work or travel in Tennessee, please contact the Subcommittee Members listed below and ask them to vote in favor of HB1883. If one of them is your Representative, then emphasize that fact when you call or email. You can find your Representative here: http://www.capitol.tn.gov/legislators/   Whether writing or calling, all that is necessary is to simply ask that they vote YES on HB1883. That's it, keep it short and to the point.   Chairman Rep. 9. As some remember I'm a Knife Rights member and helped last year with the attempt to get state preemption in place to get rid of the crazy quilt of knife laws across the state.  We succeeded with that and now you can work, live, shop, and play across the state and know that the law here and "there" are the same.  We weren't successful in getting the state 4" blade length restriction repealed nor the antiquated switchblade ban removed thanks to the House.  We're going after those again and need everyone's help to let the House members know we want these absurd laws removed from state law. 10. Assists are fundamentally different than autos.   KR and TN supporters tried for the whole package, but got tripped up at the 11th hour by the TNSA's representative showing up and misrepresenting everything about these knives. To prevent a total defeat and keep a beachhead for next session the bill was amended to just keep preemption and was passed and signed into law.    This gives Tennesseans a point to start from well beyond ground zero in advancing the removal of blade length limits and the quant switchblade law.   The phrase, "How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time." is particularly apt in this case.
  11. I'll be there tomorrow through Sunday.   I'll be at the Knife Rights booth most of the time trying to get folks to pitch in just a little to help with the struggle and at the CKCA banquet around 6 tomorrow evening.
  12. It is an illogical thing to say to get an emotional response from irrational people.
  13. Perhaps he wouldn't mind our borrowing his text and personalizing it to send our own emails?
  14. The long and short of it is that we need to work on getting individual sheriffs to support the bill to their House Reps. even if it just has preemption left in place (at least we can get this important part through). We'll be FAR better off if a Reps. sheriff tells them they don't have a problem with it than just having their organization oppose it.  If you know your sheriff personally you should talk to them about contacting the House Representative and telling them that they support the state making the laws consistent across the entire state so that people that live in one town/county are legal in every town/county (Heck, I work in Oak Ridge and live in West Knox so I'm going back and forth all the time).    This is now a district by district fight as well as what we hoped would just be a House rubber stamp to the Senate.
  15. To make it even easier to call the Committee members just paste the list below into an email and send it to your phone.  Then you can just go down the phone number column and have your phone call without having to dial. Using this approach I called everyone on the list in about 7 minutes.  Just leave a brief message you would like their support and YES vote on HB0581 and you're done (unless you get a live human willing to talk to you).   Chairman, Rep. 16. Here's an email my wife sent this morning -      Dear Representative,   Like so very many Tennesseans I carry a knife from time to time working around the garden or the house or hiking/hunting/boating.  I encourage you to vote YES in support of HB0581 so that as I go to Tractor Supply or Home Depot or hiking, camping or hunting that I don't have to wonder if the town or county I'm going to or through has the same blade length law as home.  Having a patchwork of blade length rules can make the knife in my pocket legal one minute and illegal the next as I go about my normal weekend activities (and with spring finally having arrived there are a lot of outdoor activities going on).   I'm  a Scout Leader, gardener, hiker, whitewater boater, hunter and lover of the beautiful outdoors in Tennessee and I'd like you to vote YES in support of HB0581.   Thank you,     Here's an email mailing list she put together to make it easy to contact all the Reps at once.     rep.charles.sargent@capitol.tn.gov, rep.david.alexander@capitol.tn.gov, rep.joe.armstrong@capitol.tn.gov, rep.kevin.brooks@capitol.tn.gov, rep.kent.calfee@capitol.tn.gov, rep.mike.carter@capitol.tn.gov, rep.barbara.cooper@capitol.tn.gov, rep.lois.deberry@capitol.tn.gov, rep.craig.fitzhugh@capitol.tn.gov, rep.steve.hall@capitol.tn.gov, rep.mike.harrison@capitol.tn.gov, rep.david.hawk@capitol.tn.gov, rep.matthew.hill@capitol.tn.gov, rep.curtis.johnson@capitol.tn.gov, rep.gerald.mccormick@capitol.tn.gov, rep.steve.mcdaniel@capitol.tn.gov, rep.larry.miller@capitol.tn.gov, rep.gary.odom@capitol.tn.gov, rep.dennis.roach@capitol.tn.gov, rep.johnny.shaw@capitol.tn.gov
  17. Once more into the breach... HB0581 cleared the House Finance Subcommittee and is now on the agenda for a full House Finance Committee vote next week! Chairman Sargent and each one of the House Finanace Committee members need to be called and emailed and asked to please vote YES on HB0581. According to the legislative analysis, HB0581 has "no significant fiscal impact" on the state of Tennessee and therefore there is no reason why the Finance Committee shouldn't pass this bill. However, it still received 5 NO votes in the sub-committee! That is a dangerous message to the full Committee. If you're in TN or travel to/through TN, please be sure to contact everyone on the below list, then get your friends, family and anyone else you know to call and email also!!! Heck, it only took me a few minutes to call each one and leave the simple message, "Please let the Rep. know that I support the HB5081 knife bill and hope YES will be their vote. Thanks." When calling and writing, simply ask them to vote in favor of HB0581, remind them that the legislative analysis says it has "no significant fiscal impact", and you could also remind them that SB1015, the companion bill in the Tennessee Senate, has already passed 27-3. Keep your calls and emails POLITE, short and to the point. Here's the contact information for everyone we need to inundate with calls and emails. Let's have them come in Monday morning to full in boxes! Chairman, Rep. Charles Sargent - rep.charles.sargent@capitol.tn.gov 615-741-6808 Rep. 18. If we can ring the phones off the hook for these legislators and politely explain to them that we need this law so we can work and live in different counties and expect to have the same law to obey for something as simple as a pocket knife we'll see success. No need to rant at them, but do point out that we expect them to give us a simple straightforward way to obey the law across the state.
  19. There is movement on this bill.  Thanks to the phone calls and emails Tennessee Representative Mike Harrison has agreed to hear HB0581 the Tennessee Knife Rights Bill, on April 3. 21. That's an outstanding knife, but kinda big for a general camping knife. Heck, it too will be collectable some day soon when it goes out of production. How "fantastic" was the price?
  22. The quality is so low that their safety is questionable and you're feeding the crap knife industry. Better that a set of inexpensive carving knives be purchased for the Den and let the kids take turns instead of marking them with the shame of having a cheap Chinese piece of junk for their first knife.
  23. Sorry, F,S,Su only. I'll try to get ahead of it next Sept. Google "Bowie's Hammer-In" next year or save this info. "Bowie" Ron Claiborne 2918 Ellistown Rd Knoxville TN 37924
  24. Differentially quenched O1 tool steel with micarta scales and a kydex neck sheath. The little critter was used for a weekend primitive camping trip to make stakes, fire pit frame, tarp frame and camp choirs like food prep. It held the edge through all that and was just starting to loose the shaving sharp edge by the end of it all. A couple of strokes on a ceramic and it was back to hair popping.
