A "Leg" match is a service rifle or service pistol match that is shot to earn points to win a Distinguished Award. Here is a little history :

http://www.shootersjournal.com/Features/Distinguished_History.pdf

These matches are also known as "E-I-C" matches, or Excellence-In-Competition matches.

In "Leg" matches.. there are no sighters.. You must know wind values and elevations for the different stages that are fired.. Course of fire for Service Rife is 10 rounds in 10 minutes slow fire offhand at 200 yards. 10 rounds rapid fire from standing to sitting (or kneeling) in 60 seconds at 200 yards, with one mag change, first mag is 2 rounds and second is 8 rounds. (This is because the M1 Garand only holds 8 rounds) The third stage is 300 yard rapid fire, standing to prone, 10 rounds in 70 seconds, with one mag change, 2 rounds first mag, 8 in the second. Final stage is 600 yard slow fire prone, 10 rounds in ten minutes. All slow fire stages, the rifle is loaded with one round at a time.

Though I have shot some "Bullseye".. I am not sure on the course of fire for Service Pistol. But I believe it is 10 rounds slow fire at 50 yards, 10 rounds timed fire at 25 yards and 10 rounds rapid fire at 25 yards.. It sounds easy.. but it ain't..

Only the top ten percent of Non-Distinguished are considered for an award. You may shoot and earn points at 4 EIC matches a year till you earn 30 points, but, one of your legs must be earned at Camp Perry during the Nationals.. it don't matter how many points you earn, one could earn 50 points, but it is no good till you leg at the nationals. Also.. leg matches in each state are durning Regional and State Championships. At Oak Ridge, the service rifle EIC leg matches are shot on fridays. There are usually 3 leg matches a year in Tennessee.. one durning Big Ed's, one during the State Service Rilfe Championships and one during the Regional. So in theory, if you won each of the state leg matches and legged out at Perry, a person could go "Distinguished" in one year.

Smallbore Rifle, well that is a different story.. here is a history to that:

In smallbore, one can only shoot a leg match twice a year.. and you must leg at Perry, but the requirements are much more stringent. You must make the top ten percent and that includes the ones that have already made Distinguished. To leg out and earn Distinguished in smallbore is much, much harder!!!!

hope that this helps you some.. if there are any other questions.. I will try to help you.
