A shrunken and laminated copy of the original is gtg. I keep originals in a bank box. I just called the memphis field office and checked to make sure.

I'm sure others will disagree but....

Actually, there is nothing in the law that says you have to carry your paperwork or copies of your paperwork with you. In fact, Form 4's and Form 1's, etc. are considered tax documents as they are proof that a tax has been paid. Only certain Treasury Agents may legally ask to see your tax documents.

Now, it would behoove you to voluntarily show any law enforcement officer a copy of your Form 4 or Form 1 since that is the only proof that your NFA item is legal.

Thats all true Wotac, but consider this - I took my MG to the range last week (same range whose owner did my Form 4 paperwork and transfer). Didnt think anything about it as NFA is allowed there, just got my lane and went to town. I hadnt finished loading my second mag before one of the ROs was in there wanting to see my paperwork to make sure I was legal.

I have no idea what would have happened if I had not had a copy of my F4 with me, but they sure did want to see it within minutes of hearing FA fire.

You aren't required to show it to anyone, just like a range isn't required to let you shoot without proof that your NFA is legal.

It's another situation where it would behoove you to voluntarily show it.

Agreed. Best to have your proof that your NFA is legal at all times, but the only ones you are required by law to show your info to are BATFE agents.

Having said that, if you get pissy about a request from a LEO/RO to prove you are legal and you balk because they cant legally require you to show them your F4, well, best of luck to you...

i don't see it as any of their business one way or the other, unless some firearm safety or range rule was violated especially if your a paying member of said range.

i do understand that it may be a hassle and for that reason alone it would be wise to have a copy ready to produce as proof as needed, however, if one does not have the authority in the first place, what is the concern here. i know this is a minor point but it goes to sticking your nose in someone else's business and that is just rude and shows poor manners, and i say shame on the nosie person.
