Which Dillon Press?

Recommended Posts

I've been doing a lot of thinking and have decided that when I get a progressive press, it will be a Dillon. My question is this: Do you guys recommend the square deal or the 550? I have a single stage press and don't mind using it for rifles, so I am not too bothered by the fact that the square deal only does pistol. Are there any other major differences between the two?

No clue really. A buddy of mine has a dillon but i don't know which model. He's churned out massive amounts of plinking grade .40 and .45 on it for years...with only occasional cuss words spoken because his loads were too light to cycle. They are all good machines as far as i know, i don't think you can go wrong.

Whatever you decide post up. Somebody can probably use the info.

Neero i would recommend the RL550.I shoot around a 1000 rds per month and have found the 550 to be a excellent reloader.I am thinking about going up to the 650 simply because i need to be shooting more and the 650 will help me on cutting down my reloading time compared to the 550.May i also suggest you going to the "Brian Enos Forum".Once there all you have to do is look around and you will get a lot of info for you on this matter.

I own a RL550 and load for .45 and .357 and would highly recommend it, undisturbed and with all the prepwork done and several tubes of primers lined up 400-450 RPH was easy.

When I was competing(IPSC) I was loading and shooting 1500-2000rounds a week. I have loaded with several different powders and by feel all was good, over the chrono I found about a 10% variation(over 100rounds) using Unique, all ball powder has had less than 2% variation. All this has more to do with powder than it does the auto charger but is something to take into concideration when going to a progressive machine.

Ramtoughf47, have you seen the new auto case feeder for the 550? That mod could have the potential to almost double production speed, provived you have primers lined up ready to roll.

I would second Enos' forum as an exellent source of info.

I understand from my buddy with the dillon that it is a square D. Evidently, it only can use die sets from dillon only. I would say get the 550 as I believe you can use anyone's dies with it (standard threads).
