Remington 597--Supringly satisfied!!

Recommended Posts

I picked up a Remington 597 a few weeks ago for range use. I threw a $30 walmart scope on it and headed out for the range. To be honest, my expectations were pretty low. I have read about FTF and a few other problems with this gun. I have now fired around 1,000 rounds through this gun. It has feed everything that i have tried (golden bullets, Winchester 333's, cci's, etc.) Trigger is a little rough but defiantly acceptable in a $150 gun. Biggest plus, an adult size stock. I like the 10/22's but this gun just fits me better than any ruger. Anyway, this is a picture of the rifle and a target from 50 yrds. This is 25 rounds of cci mini mags. Might want to consider a Remington if you need a budget .22

My Remmy 597 is a great rifle... my most accurate .22 LR by a long shot. If you get a chance, get one of the Volquartsen drop-in hammers -- it really cleans up the trigger pull. Great value in a rimfire gun.

I have one that shoots nicely, no feeding or extraction issues. In fact, I would give it the edge out of the box over the newer 10/22s. The Volquartsen hammer is a great improvement as is the VQ scope mount.

Love mine.

If you do disassemble the receiver.

Be sure NOT to over tighten the guide rail screws.

If you over tighten them it can cause the bolt guide rods to bend very slightly.

If one bend it can cause all sorts of problems.

When re-installing the screw just screw them in until they stop.

No need to get them tight, the stock will not let them fall out.

Good shooting, Mines been a champ for me.

On the 597: it doesn't help that Remington owner's manual lists the torque for the rails in "inch-pounds" - some folks automatically read "foot-pounds" and over-torque by a factor of 12.

Other than a little spring noise on recoil, mine runs fairly well, a poor man's 10/22 if you will.
