Ok folks, here's my question is legal in the state of Tennessee to carry a loaded long gun in your truck? If not, what about with a carry permit?

With a permit you can carry a loaded long gun in your car as long as a round is NOT in the chamber. Without a permit, the ammo and gun need to be separate. AKA, the gun needs to be unloaded.

That pretty much sums it up.

This.

With permit: Long gun can be loaded but chamber must be empty.

Without permit: Same as handguns. Ammo and firearms must be as separate as possible.

I would go a little further on the long gun separate from ammo. Make sure there is no question you are merely transporting the firearm. This means, the firearm in a separate area from the passengers, hard to do in a truck, and the ammo separate. Further, having additional stops between you and the firearm would help, such as transporting the long gun in a locked case, with the ammo in a separate locked case.

The age of having a gun rack in the window of the truck, sadly, has long passed.
