Question about logging in east TN

Recommended Posts

Some background: A few years ago, in a different state, I bought some property and was able to recover a fair amount of the purchase price by having it thinned by a logger. If I remember right we did a 65/35 split on what the logs brought in. 65 for me, 35 for him. I hardly missed what was removed. I used some of the tops that were left for heating my home. Most was hardwoods, some pine. All things considered, a great deal with no regrets.

I'm currently looking at some property in east Tennessee (Grainger County) that is mostly wooded and have been thinking of trying the same thing. Is there anyone in this end of the state knowledgeable about the current demand for timber and if a similar experience could be possible here? I understand hard numbers are impossible without a close look at the property but I'm just trying to get an idea of if this is even feasible to consider in this area. A good bit of this land is steep like most land in this area but does have a reasonably good road to the rear of the property.

Ultimately, my goal is to have a place to shoot without the headaches of going to a public range.

The TGO family is a diverse group and even if there are no experts, I expect there are at least some opinions. Any input is appreciated.
