Got my first AK

So I got my first AK this past week.  The front site is very hard for me to see in medium to low light.  I've got some white glow in the dark paint i'm considering painting it.  I know it won't glow for a prolonged period of time...but being white should help immensely I'm thinking.  Any reason not to do this?  I've not customized or changed much on guns...but things are going to be different with this one.

Also, the FFL that did my transfer told me he wouldn't shoot the gun without checking headspace.  I've never had to do that with any other gun I had...but he just kept saying it, making me think I should at least investigate.  Is this a common issue?  He mentioned gauges were about 40$?
