without more details, impossible to address actions and reactions. A reasonably safe way to enter a garage is with an automatic opener, staying in your locked car, and closing the door behind your car with the opener as you sit in your locked car. Still one is vulnerable to attack with a gun pointed at you waiting for the door to open or close.
Not everyone has an automatic opener. Elderly couples may have additional handicaps. No one is invincable.

all shots after the initial 4 seem unnecessary to me. If he called 911 at that point, we wouldn't have this conversation.

The article indicates that the perpetrator may have been carrying a fake handgun. How would that effect (if at all) the justification as a SD shooting?
Probably not a bit. If a reasonable person would perceive it as a 'gun' then that is really the bottom line.

I learned about it with handcuffs on next to a man that tried to kill me. That's the only time I was thinking about the law and how it affected me. No charges filed against me.
Certainly glad for your favorable outcome…but it sucks knowing your future lies in the hands of others. That is why studying all one can about SD helps one from being in that situation. Learning by experience is not the preferred method. Unfortunately, most people now charged with felony assault thought they were doing the right thing and never fired a shot. Avoidance is the # 1 plan. I would rather take a butt whooping than pull my gun, that will heal faster than my bank account.

IMO no need for sights .......commit to the dot. Have seen several sight failures, several alternative solutions in an emergency.

Interesting, from your Branca background you would look at hardcadt for anything but wad cutters in snub revolvers.

I know several that own and shoot the Ameriglo Haven Red Dot. Ameriglo is owned by Trijicon. Less expensive, yes, cheap no. Dave Spaulding, a nationally known writer and trainer that uses one talks very favorably of his. They ALL have problems and failures, but I have a SRO and Holosun and I favor the Ameriglo over the Holosun. Size wise, the Ameriglo is between the two.

you are welcome to come into Knoxville and look at what I have

Been pleased with Romeo “0” on mine. 5 moa. Larger guns fan of ameriglo haven.

As said before, get Andrew Branca's book, The Law of Self Defense. Also, the state ECP course should give you a basic guidance on using deadly force in self defense.

Yes, they can charge you. If they knowingly do this to someone who was defending themselves, they will be committing political suicide. Civil suits without a criminal conviction will not attract a good grade of ambulance chaser.
Tell that to OJ.

,,,, TN Law now prevents civil action.....
I believe this is only true if it was adjudicated and does not apply if simply the DA decides not to prosecute, or the Grand Jury decides no true bill.

check out the Ameriglo Haven. Tom Givens has given this pistol a workout and found it very favorable.

Bigger window primarily. Had it mounted on an EGW dovetail mount which was OK. Just decided to have slide milled and put what I think to be an improved 'dot' on it. This is on an M&P 2.0. Next will swap out barrel for an Apex drop in. Still my favorite 'game' gun is an old 1.0 5" with Apex barrel. It will stack bullets, one hole. It has a SRO on it, but the Haven is almost the same size window but less that 1/2 the price.

My 2 cents.....just bought an Ameriglo Haven. 5 moa dot. Replaces my Holosun 407. So far very favorable and price 215 vs retail 389 from Midway.

For me the original LCP is close to perfect as a pocket pistol....with the Nemesis holster. At times I will use a Versa Carry device for waistband carry....no pockets, or pocket too small. Can't speak to the other models.

Coming from Alaska, where the state has a "it's your right, do as you wish" attitude and law books, its tough to go so far backwards in Tennessee.
I will do some lookin to see what sort of movement there is towards con-carry.
Is there much pushback from people on the lack of a right to con-carry?
Best start would be with Tennessee Firearms Association.......TFA
"...so far backwards...", maybe try CA, IL, NY for starters. TN has very favorable laws overall. Not perfect. If want to change something, reduce the sign language from having the force of law to a simple trespass.

It is permitless carry, not constitutional carry. For one to legally carry in all parks one must possess either the ECP or CCP. If employed by a post secondary educational institution an ECP is required. Technically, one must have a permit to drive through a school zone with a handgun according to Federal law.
-
you need to discuss auto carry with an attorney. Strict reading of the TN law permits possession in an auto......but don't depend on LEO to know that. Some will, others won't and there is where your hassle begins. I would also recommend that you take the ECP course when you are within a year of your 21st BD.

Just sharing recent experience.
Been using Hornady LNL for about 10 yrs. Loading 9 mm 147 gr DG TC coated bullets. Had the press mounted on a custom I beam mounted on a bench and very nice ammo, super reliable in all guns. BUT, works so well didn’t want to change calibers (45) and monkey up the thing and spend time resetting. So I bought the In - Line Fabricator Universal mount that has the quick chande adapter. Then bought another LNL set it up for 45 ACP. Set it up for the 200 gr DG bullet TC.
Brings up point #2. I was using a Redding Pro series seating die. Was shaving some of the powder coating on about a quarter of the bullets on the 45. Switched to the Hornady seater and stem and it’s perfect so far.
Oh yeah, point 3 and main reason for post (old age) my Hornady powder measure is very consistent. Been using True Blue powder for the 45 - meters great and burns clean even with a relatively light 45 load.

Shot the 4” today. Smooth action, reliable function, very accurate and very good sights….this from a dot fan. Trigger was good/ smooth and about 5#. Really liked it. This was a friends, I would consider purchase. My Fury 1911 holster with rail worked well with this gun. If they all worked like this one , it’s a winner.
