OH CRAP! I just reread the article and realized that they closed river traffic as well. I can't even imagine how much cargo runs up and down that river every day. Not good! Not good at all!
Yah, real bad!

Local news can't seem to get it straight. There's a crack which is bad enough to close the bridge, but local TV seems to think it'll be repaired in just a day or two. Really? I kinda have my doubts about that.
The news also reported that 100,000 vehicles cross that bridge every day. The I-55 bridge, which normally sees half that, will now have to take the full load. Downtown Memphis is a mess. Traffic is barely moving.
For those who don't know, Memphis and all the Mississippi river bridges have been on our enemy's primary target lists since the early cold war days. Drop those bridges and you effectively cut this country in half.
The Major just released a statement that repairs would take months, not days. I think that is more likely.

Now I bet some idjit wrecks on the old bridge and jacks it all up.
The way things are going, it wouldn’t surprise me.

TDOT says no time frame for closure.

Midway has some Federal 38 Spec. 158 Lead round nose. $55 a box. Nope sorry I can not bring myself to pay those prices. I will just conserve what little I have.
I think $ 30 was the highest I paid during Obama panic. And I didn’t buy much.- 1

Have seen mostly Cubs there but they do have a fair amount of bears around the cove.

Our dogs have always been considered family. We take care of them for life.
Our last two dogs have been shelter dogs and I won’t ever buy from a dog breeder again.

Filled up yesterday. Told my kids to do the same. I have to head south soon for a planned trip, so fingers crossed.
Checked gas buddy and prices this morning were ok locally and in Alabama.
The minute declarations of emergency are announced, public panic begins.

I think it is a reasonable thing to do.

Yeah, I love being outside and moving through the forest and Tennessee is the best place to be!
It may seem pointless (and painful), but there are so many benefits. My dog in the avatar climbed over 3000 feet and went 17 miles yesterday and she is just about to turn 13.
That is awesome especially for a dog in their teens! I couldn’t log that many miles myself. I have in past years done 5k’s, 10 milers and a couple half marathons. But I am a bit older now. I did go 5.5 miles a week ago. But none of my miles are in the mountains with a pack.
My hat is off to you both!- 1

Boots on the ground; 22-25 lb pack on the back.
I hike at least once a week in mountainous terrain. Average hike is 15-20 miles. Being in shape, able to carry weight and navigate keeps me feeling "prepped".
Up to 422 miles in 2021; had over 1300 miles last year.
Keeping a new stat: we've climbed over 65,000 feet this year.
That’s a lot of miles! Definitely a good exercise program!

Found the go fund me page that explains the man died from fatal injuries trying to navigate the canyon to get to the road. The female ha da severe ankle injury require surgery. I simply think they made a bad navigation error and got in very extreme terrain and had a mishap. According to the timeline on the page if they’d stayed with the car they would have been found an entire day earlier. Assuming it had gas they could have even run the ac periodically to stave off heat trauma

Thanks for the update, answers some questions. I read that Alex was a veteran who served in Afghanistan and worked to help veterans in Arizona.

Yes she picked up the top of the line Garmin which I think is overkill for my needs. I was looking at the Zoleo as it had really good reviews.
If you decide to get a different brand let us know how you like it. My old model won’t last forever and eventually I will be looking to replace it. The truth is it’s just nice to have, extra insurance. I have camped and hiked in a lot of remote places long before cell phones and never had a serious emergency.
Once in the four corners area out west, I had to drive miles to relay a message for a ranger, because even their radios weren’t reliable.

I'm thinking about returning the inReach she got me. There are some really bad reviews online. For $500 the damn thing should work and that doesn't include the monthly subscription. There are other competitors out there that I'm looking at which cost around $200.
All I can say is mine works fine. Most anything with two way communication via satellite will require a subscription. You must have the more expensive model with maps and touchscreen. The mini costs about 324 now. I see Zoleo on Amazon for $199. It also requires subscription. The ACR locator beacons do not require a subscription, but do not have communication and they have a shelf life.

I also have a Garmin InReach. Great piece of mind when I’m far from cell service.
I have the older model the inreach se, so far it is still holding up. I take mine with me on the road or camping. Good to have for an emergency.

Erik88, I have one of those garmin I reach devices. I keep the lowest cost subscription just in case of an emergency. Thankfully haven’t needed it yet.
Frog4aday, I agree in a life threatening emergency you could drive on the rims to get out of harms way.
I don’t understand why they choose to hike to a remote ledge. Maybe they thought they could get a cell signal. The one thing good thing they did was to leave the note.
Having the means to fix a flat or a least put air in the tires would have made a difference too.
I have been to Death Valley and spent a fair amount of time in the Mojave. Your vehicle needs to be well maintained. I used to carry a well stocked auto emergency kit, extra water, food etc.
Even just driving I-10 on the highway thru the desert you see tons of cars that overheat and break down.

I think they would have done better to stay with the vehicle.

They disappeared quickly, like every thing firearms related these days. They were selling for $1100. I was encouraged that they were even up for sale again. I almost bought one but I talked my self out of sending the money.

I was looking on buds site today and saw Colt AR 15s in stock. I thought, I had just seen a unicorn.
Saw them on Rural kings site too for a little while.

I really thought Obama had taught us to be self sufficient. If you're not prepared I have no sympathy.
I don’t care if I ever buy any ammo again. But for those still buying, I checked Midsouth Shooters. They still had most of the popular calibers.

As reported on cnbc.com today:
Walmart said Tuesday it will discontinue all sales of short-barrel rifle ammunition that can be used with military style weapons, discontinue sales of handgun ammunition and stop all handgun sales in Alaska, following two “horrific” shootings at Walmart stores this summer.
An early Christmas present to online retailers and every local gunstore in the country. I have not bought ammo at Walmart in years.

Arkansas RDOT, just did a live update about the bridge. Basically the contract inspector thought the crack in the bridge was so bad he immediately dialed 911 to shut down the traffic. Supposed to release drone photos of the damage soon.
