1. It's interesting that he felt safer by disarming you but not by watching the others in the car as he did this. That seems more unsafe than just telling you to keep your hands where he can see them and dealing with the driver. It seems that he should have called for assistance if he felt threatened so one guy/gal could have watched the other occupants while he removed your gun. Also, when he gave the gun back to you, now you have a gun and a magazine out and in your hand instead of in your holster, in a sitting position. That seems really unsafe for him if you were a crazy person because I have seen how fast some people can load a mag and rack a pistol at the local club matches.
2. First, thanks for the link that, helped. I tried to search the topic before posting but I guess I didn't use the right terms. Second, I wasn't sure what the service was. I thought if several people said "it was great, well worth it". I would seriously consider it. But I figured you could just buy the springs that you would need from one of the suppliers out there as mentioned above. As for the gunsmith, I don't know any and I've heard some horror stories from friends about some pretty bad "hack jobs" and that just had me wondering about the different services available. I figured the manufacturer would do it right the first time and not guess at it. But after reading form the link above, I guess that is not necessarily the case. Anyway, thanks for the help.
3. Anyone ever send a gun to Ruger to get it reconditioned? Was it worth it? Were there any hidden costs? I know you have to buy parts but was there anything over the $30 dollars that they charge. I have an older P89 that I thought about having sent to them for reconditioning. The gun works great but it was built in 1997 and may need some new springs and the like. Just curious. Thanks.
4. I am lucky in that I have a small place to shoot here on my property so I have been working on drawing from a holster and acquiring multiple targets. The grouping is about 8 inches or so at 8 to 10 yards. I'm not very fast at this time but I have been working on being safe.
5. I went to the one last month and really liked it. I just don't think my ruger p89 would be up to the task. IDPA looks like the place for me to start. But I will definitely try that when I upgrade my gun.
6. Thanks. I will pass the info on to him. He has to get a new gun to start IDPA, since all of his got stolen years ago. So the info should help with his search.
7. A friend from work came with me this time and was very interested in what you were shooting. He would like to start shooting IDPA also and wants to use a revolver. Do you have any suggestions for an entry level revolver for IDPA? Brand? Caliber?
8. I borrowed a friends M&P 9c and shot it today when I got home. I liked the gun but it sure did feel small in my hand. I have also shot some of the other small carry guns and they just feel too small but that may change if I buy one and shoot one more.
9. I went to the IDPA match at ORSA today and it definitely looks like the shooting competition to start with. The group that I followed started at stage three with a good mix of shooters. I see now why people were saying to go ahead and take your equipment with you and sign up and just do it. Problem is I don't have everything I need. Hopefully I will by the next one. I was waiting to see if I could use my current pistol and it seems like most everyone was using full size pistols. I was not sure if most we're using compacts in IDPA. I know some of you said it was fine, but I felt more comfortable seeing it in person. Now I just need to get some magazines for my P89. Again, thanks for all the help and encouragement.
10. When I worked at UPS many years ago (my early 20's) my fingerprints were worn off from handling boxes 4 hours a day for five years straight. My finger tips looked polished almost. So it can happen at any age, but I don't know how you move forward from there.
11. The governor looks good but it is a little expensive for my taste. I bet that would be fun to shoot though. I am leaning toward a 20 ga for the ease of use for my wife. She grew up with a shotgun in the house as her home defense weapon and would like another. Plus I think it would be the way to go for me also, I could use it on the raccoons on my back porch
12. I wondered if anyone in our group was on this forum but I didn't want to ask as I was trying to keep a low profile and stay out of the way. I was going to use my Ruger P89 for the IDPA and will need to get a couple more magazines with holder. I may have to get a new holster since the one that I have does not cover the whole trigger guard. It covers the trigger and about half of the guard but I think I read where it supposed to cover the whole trigger guard. That is what everyone else's guns looked like this weekend. I do have one question though and realize this is mostly personal choice, but what would be a good entry level gun for USPSA matches. Ray suggested the S&W M&P or the XDm both in 9mm unmodified. I also like the Ruger SR9 but don't know if that would be a good choice. I tried to make out what everyone was using but it was hard for me tell.
13. I had a great time out at ORSA match this weekend. While I did not shoot, I did follow our group (started on stage 2 with Ray Z.) to all six stages and looks like it will be really fun. I suggest to anyone that might be interested in this type of shooting to go to one of these matches. I will most likely go to next the IDPA match and shoot if able. Thanks to all that gave me so much information on the forum and at the range.
14. If you have a C&R can you purchase eligible guns at Wanenmacher’s in OK and bring them home yourself? I have never been, but am thinking about it next year if I can buy my own stuff and bring it back legally.
15. If the date works out, I would like to attend. Could you consider a later morning or afternoon start time for those of us from east TN? 9:00am or later would be great. That would give us plenty of time to drive out to the Nashville area. Thanks
16. Jonnin, are you in a different club and location than the ORSA? If so, what is the name and shooting location? I would like to check out both and see what they are like. I have an older 9mm Ruger P89 that I purchased for home defense, so that would be the gun that I would start with. I would need to get an extra mag or two, since I only have two but if the competitions are as interesting as they look, I would upgrade when possible. BrasilNuts / 2Alpha, I will try to come out to Oak Ridge on Saturday and see what it is like but I don't know if I would shoot. What about weather? Do you cancel if it rains? I could risk a drive to Oak Ridge (20 miles) if the weather is questionable but if one of the clubs is in Chattanooga (110 miles) that may be a little far to go. Thanks for information and the help.
17. I did not realize you could swap the barrels on the lower end guns like these. I guess I figured that was only on higher end specialty guns. Now I am really interested in one.
18. I was wondering how you get started in competitive shooting? Can you go out and watch some competitions in the East TN (Knoxville) area and see what they are like? I have seen videos on line but I would like to see them first hand. I am curious about the various types. I have read a little about IDPA, Clays & 3 Gun. What equipment is needed / required for these types? Thanks
19. @RichardR - Thanks for the detailed information. That really helps. I have seen the Mossbergs @ Mavericks on the trading boards and am really considering them. @ everyone - Will these guns do a good job at shooting clays? Just curious. If anyone feels that they are not, that's fine, I would like to know why or why not if possible. Again, thanks for all the help.
20. I like the judge, but I felt like I could get a shotgun for less money. A smaller sized shotgun is a consideration since this would also be for my wife to use when I am not home. I will say that I am for a pump shotgun so that I can give warning that I have it ready to go. This may "give away my postition" as some other threads have said that I have read, but I would like to have the safety of not hitting a family member.
21. Thanks for the information. I will be checking out the classifieds on the boards to see if a deal comes up on one of the guns that were mentioned.
22. I am looking for suggestions on home defense shotguns. I am wondering what is out there and what the options and costs are. I don't want to spend a ton of money but I don't want to buy the equivalent of a baseball bat either. Thanks for the help.
23. Will do. It will be early January before I can get to cleaning it buy I will email you then. Thanks.
24. They all looked identical, but they had some other crates under the ones that I went through.
25. I just bought it from J Floyds 2 weeks ago and have not even cleaned it yet. The numbers match but I don't know if anything has been changed. I assume I will need to clean it before I can check the headspace but I don't know that much about them. Just the little bit that I have researched online and seen on youtube. @ pcrc11 - I will take you up on the offer but I need to know what I need to do to prep the rifle, if anything. @ dou44 - I figure it is likely ok, but I would hate to take the chance if it is easy to check. It is incouraging to hear that you did not have any trouble with yours. I bought the rifle and was hoping that it would not end up a cleaned up "safe queen".
