  1. My Grandfather served in the Navy during WWII. He witnessed testing of the a-bomb from his ship. I found this shell in his tool box while going thru things yesterday. From the research I've done, it appears this matches up with a 20mm anti-aircraft gun they Navy was using. I also read that they didn't find the round to effective against the Kamikaze pilots, so around 1944, the 20mm was being replaced quickly. Anyone have any more info on this shell? I wonder if he brought it home from the ship? There is also a lot number on the shell, I don't have that photo.
  2. I'm not sure where I fall on this.  It's a challenge for me.  A quote comes to mind though.  "They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
  3. I'll take the holster.   I have a couple of magazines I'll list up later this afternoon.   Edit:  Sigma SV40E 15 round magazines (2)   Looks like I was seconds late.
  4. my neighbor repairs these phones all the time.  If you're interested, shoot me a PM and I'll give you my address to ship it to me/him and have him check it out.  May just be a connector popped off or something.  I suspect your data is still there and accessible.  Best of luck.
  5. For Christmas.  She loves it!  We are going to shoot it this weekend.  She's excited, which means I'm excited.  I really like the fact that it's made in the USA.  Over the last 5 years I've really tried to buy made in USA products above others, even at higher cost.  All x-mas presents given this year by my fan were made in USA.   Anyway, just had to share.  Merry Christmas TGO'ers.  Happy Holiday's, be safe, and protect your liberty. sq
  6. all my parts are in, and the gun is now with my smith for fixing up!  I'll post more pics and an update sometime in February when I get the gun back.  Thanks for all the help guys.
  7. i feel like I saw some type of plastic piece that would fill the gap on an 18 or maybe 20 round mag.   Guess it was a unicorn sadly.  I like the Mec-Gar mags!  Tried them out today.  The gun shoots well and no issues eating ammo.
  8. Figured you guys would enjoy seeing these old boxes of ammo I got from my grandfather. I have no idea how old they are, but I know I won't be shooting these boxes. He did have some more, not as old, and I"m shooting that up as I am able. .87 for a box of 50 rounds! Hope it doesn't come to my trying to shoot this stuff. Still impossible to find in Memphis.
  9.   The best magazines available for that pistol are the ones shown here: http://www.brownells.com/magazines/handgun-magazines/magazines/magazine-plastic-bottom-military-grip-prod7190.aspx?avs|Make_3=High%20Standard   I'll be ordering one of these eventually.
  10. noted.  I've not shot it yet, but hoping to soon.  It's still impossible to find 22 here in this part of the world so I'm not in any real hurry, and not able to be picky on brand at this point.  I would think copper plated business would be best but I haven't researched this at all.   I keep saying "they can make more bullets than consumers have money", but it hasn't proven true in my area yet.  soon...
  11. where are you buying your  x-grip adaptor's 2.000hhh?
  12. Is anyone here super interested in this gun?  I'm thinking I may put it on the block for sale.
  13. Thanks for the above info.  Very helpful, in that I didn't realize the 226 mags fit my 228.  I've ordered up a couple while I was thinking about it.  I'm sure I won't regret having extras.
  14. I'll have to look up Kroil, assuming I can't pick that up locally.  Thanks for the tips!  I sure wish I could get the trigger freed up…working on it more later today.
  15. I've ordered a slide lock spring, safety (which was totally missing), front sight and screw.  More cleaning and lubing.  The trigger action is stiff.  I think I need to pull that assembly out and clean it.  There's a pin that's sticking out a little that looks like it holds the trigger in.  Should I try and remove that?  What kind of tools would I need if I was to.  I imagine a small punch of some kind?
  16. http://www.topgunsupply.com/mec-gar-p228-229-9mm-18rd-magazine-afc.html 18 rounds!  What?  I figured I'd be looking at 13 rounds, but was surprised to see 15 and 18.  I read the 15 round is flush, and the 18 requires some type of extender.  I wonder if the fit is identical to the factory 10 round.  There's a small tail on the 10 that helps with my grip somewhat.   I also would like to pick up some new tritium sites.  The ones that are on it are spent.  Trijicon should have some kind of buy-back program on these things...
  17. can I still get one?
  18. I knew that wouldn't fly, went back and added the pic.  Thanks!  I'm excited.  It came with 2 10 round mags.   I'd like to pick up some larger ones asap.  And I need a holster.
  19. had to share.
  20. Guys, I have a High Standard I've inherited. That's the good news. The bad news is that it's rusted in several places. The trigger is locked up. I can see rust up in the trigger area. I've looked at the barrel and only see one small place near the back of the barrel where the bullet sits. A few other spots in the magazine well and exterior. The grips are in good shape. The front site is missing. I've put the gun in a bath of kerosene as a starting point on freeing things up. Where can I get a site and what should I be doing here to get this gun back to operational condition? Is it possible to restore the gun completely and have it re-blued or something? I"m having trouble with my phone now, will post pictures later when I get that resolved.
  21. Guys thanks all for the comments here.  I'm new to firearms in general and learning so this is all good info.  I'll try and respond to some comments here. I was told it was a 7mm pin fire.  Haven't' measure the diameter of the cylinder yet. I was also told it was a Webley, but apparently it's not.  What do you think it might me Dolomite? I have not cleaned it at all, and understand it's bet not to do too much rubbing on the antique.  I would like to either get it in display condition, or move it along to someone that want it as a project.  I just don't like it sitting here in the current state.  Just that way about things.  I either want them looking proper, or not to look at them.   The front site was already out.  I'm not sure how it fits in there because it's not dove-tailed.  Solder I guess like you said Dolomite?  I'd definitely want to get some help putting that back in I think.  Unless it's just that simple.  I have solder. TankerHC, I don't know who did the engraving, but I'm guessing by everyone's comments here that this was not factory.  It does look like good work to me.  The symmetry kept on both sides is art for sure. I am going to chat with the Dixie Gun works guys and see what they have to say about it.  I'll keep you guys up to date.  Trying to take Caster's advice here and get the thing "rebuilt" if it doesn't look like it will turn into an expensive project.
  22. so I'm needing a loading gate and ejector.   ok. I'll keep a look out for some ammo.  Need some for display at the least.
  23. Thank you!  I'll take all the help I can get.
  24. I'm not sure where to start with looking for parts.  I'll do some googling and see what comes up.  I had showed it to my local gunsmith, hoping he would express some kind of interest in the project…but notta.
  25. I want another one.  Wonder if there's any chance of getting one at this point.
