1. I think it would prove to be more of a chore than a help, I could be wrong though
2. That's kinda what I thought, or all I could figure anyway.
3.
Also, take into account for the handguard retainer. The gas block should not sit flush against the barrel shoulder because of this. The handguard retainer is .040" thick so the gas block will sit .040" farther back if you do not take that into account. 10 sheets of paper is about the right thickness. You will need to center it both side to side and front to back.
Alright, I've built several AR's, and I do mean several....but that term is new to me, handguard retainer I mean. What you're referring to only applies to non free floats correct? Like GI M4 handguards? That's all I can think of, since all I've ever used are free float handguards. I will reinforce your point though, the gas block should not ever sit against the shoulder of the barrel
4. I use a scale (think precise ruler for machinists). Measure from the center of the hole in the gas block to the end of the gas block. Then take that measurement and use it to go from the center of the hole in the barrel out however far it was, mark it with a pencil. I then take the scale and put the edge over half the hole in the barrel and draw a straight line back to the other mark I made. I also draw a line up the side of the gas block that is a indicator for where the hole is in the gas block. Now you have a line that indicates where both holes are (gas block and barrel) and a line that tells you where your gas block should stop. Sounds involved and complicated, but I promise it's not, just hard to put into words. Pretty fool proof if you do it this way
5. Really? That's pretty neat. Thanks for all the kind words guys, I should have up a couple more pictures soon
6. Haha that's awesome! Small world I guess, I could only find one other picture like it on google when we were talking about doing it, good to see more people doing fun/gun wedding pics
7. Ain't it though? Thank ya sir! We have some different ones with us all holding the weapons, just groomsmen with our edc's, things like that. I wanted to do an "all AR" picture but decided to use some of my other guns at the last minute for variety.
8. Not sure if this is the right spot for this, but here it is This is just a lower res teaser that we got back, but I had to share. We had several interesting/firearms related pictures that I'll update this with as they come back. There's a couple other tngo members in the picture, so it's doubly cool
9. I really hate to be "that guy" and I hate to have this attitude...but I keep my weapons loaded, and clean for good reason. I can't say for sure that they won't be successful in getting this ratified. I wouldn't believe they could, but then again I would've never believed we would be here as a nation either. I do my part, I write and call my representatives. I support conservatives at every turn with all my means. I'm just worn out from the constant attack on my civil liberties. I honestly don't know how much longer there will be a peaceful option to keep our rights.
10. It's over gassed man. Heavy buffer, maybe even a 9mm buffer. I'd take it down and put an adjustable gas block on personally
11. Honestly, I'd love it if it were several shades darker, more like an OD. I do like the contrast of the grips and the color though. Looks like you did a very good job on er
12. No fault in that at all, I respect it. Don't think I was trying to give you any grief. I did quite a bit of reading as well before I built my first pistol
13. The grounds we used was our local lions club. We shot towards a tree line with a field on the other side about 200 yards in length. I'm not sure what the absolute safe distance would be, but I'd think that as long as you were clear 100 yards in the shooting direction you'd be good
14.
Are you doing these as fundraisers for a local group? We're trying to come up with a fundraiser for our group and thought we might check into what's involved and what the potential payback would be.
Yes sir, we actually organized it through our church, so all workers were volunteers. We charged $5 per round for the ham rounds and $3 per for the turkey rounds, first sign up sheet to fill up is the round we would shoot first. I'm not sure ours would be a good gauge as far as profitability goes because we served hot dogs and hamburgers that hardly no one bought, so we ate a lot of that money. I can say with confidence though that it would be worth your time and effort as a fundraiser. I forgot to mention we also had a long shot at 100ft that we judged by counting the number of pellets inside the center ring. Sold those shots for $3 per and we kept a running tally of it, declaring the winner at the end of the day. Not to brag, but as far as operationally running well ours went the smoothest of any I've ever been to so I'd be more than happy to share any info I can to help out
15.
Trying to decide if I want to build the upper or buy one... I don't want to end up with a really out of timed bolt release or be over gassed.
Adjustable gas block and/or heavy buffer. Honestly I think you're doing a lot of worrying over not a lot of matter. I've heard that cheaper barrels tend to have a little bigger gas port than more expensive, higher quality barrels. I can't verify that personally but I can say that the gas port on my pistol barrel is larger than a couple of my other barrels, whatever that means
16. Well if you are skiddish about the law, build it as a pistol, then you can go wherever you please
17. Your question has been answered already, and I'll concur. Your lower is a receiver, nothing more and nothing less. AR pistols are a hoot for sure. Here's mine
18.
What are the general rules these days and how are they scored?
In most I've been to, and at the one we hosted, closest pellet to center wins. We had traditional rounds (75ft, our shell and no stands or props) and open (80ft, your shell, and rests were allowed). Tie either goes to a shoot off or next closest pellet. Don't care too much for the open rounds since you end up with several that have the center completely blown out.
19. Me and my dad go to almost the shoots in Columbia and Santa Fe. We actually had one in Mt. Pleasant last Saturday. Had a good turnout, shot 20 rounds with 12 people in each round. We felt good about it since it was a rainy day. I'll find out when the next one is in Columbia and I'll update this
20. Good thread and great info, I'm glad you started it. I too have been trying to educate myself on the AK. I want one to add to the collection something awful, but financially right now I'm having to try and work out trade deals
21. I would love to see someone draw from one of those jackets under stress.
22. I'd love to be able to go pick some up. I'd go grab a few $75 gift cards from Wally World and have at it. I would be afraid of receiving stolen goods though.

Build or Buy?

For me, with the options I enjoy (free float tubes, Magpul items and such) it's cheaper to build. Now if I were in your position and wanted a "bare bones" rifle, I'd just buy it. I enjoy building as well because it gets me familiar with every single part of my AR's, like others have said it may come in handy someday.
