  1. Phantom, For some time, I have been looking for something on that experment also. IIRC, it was supposed to be the U of Ohio or U of Cleveland, but so far, I can't find any verifiable information.
  2. Yowzaa! There aren't too many things sexier than a woman who knows how to handle a gun!
  3. I agree, but it works both ways. Conversely, I have seen people that aren't gamers that I wouldn't want to get into a firefight with. For instance, I'm not a gamer*, but I'm a pretty fast and accurate shooter. The only problem I have is the attitude that fast is ALWAYS better no matter what the circumstance, and that just because someone is fast, they are a warrior. Either can be true (IMO) but I don't think they are ALWAYS true. However, I should note that being fast certainly doesn't hurt anything, but "fast" in and of itself isn't the only tactic that exists. *My definition of "gamer" is someone who plans out every stage, looking for every conceivable way to make the stage faster, within the rules, even if something they do doesn't make "tactical" sense. Your definition may vary.
  4. That was mainly my point. While I agree that being overweight certainly can/does hinder certain things, I don't think being overweight in and of itself automatically negates the possibility of being that, either.
  5. Same here, although, frankly, I'm not overweight, I'm fat. For purposes of semantics, can we define "warrior?"
  6. That's certainly true. (and since we agree, it MUST be right ) One of the things I figured out pretty quick is many people think of themselves as warriors just because they can shoot a little. I'm not trying to be a smartass, but what does weight have to do with it?
  7. I never really understood the heated comparisons of IDPA and IPSC. So IDPA is an anagram for "I don't practice anymore." So what? IPSC is an anagram for "Idiots practicing silly crap." Both are cliches and don't mean anything. Give me a few minutes and I could come up with derogatory and non-derogatory anagrams for just about any word. I competed IDPA when I first started shooting because at the time, it was the only thing available locally. I had never shot in, or even heard of IPSC, and a couple of years later, I went to an IPSC match in another city, under the impression that it was going to be exactly the same type of thing we did at the range where I shot. Interestingly enough, with the exception of two other masters, both shooting scoped guns, I beat everyone there, including one other master shooting a scoped gun. After a brief argument with one of them about how my gun must have been extremely modified, because, even though they beat me, it wasn't by a huge margin, I reshot the stage using his scoped gun, and he reshot using my completely stock Sig 229. I shot the stage considerably faster using his gun, and he shot the stage considerably slower using my gun. For people that don't believe it, OF COURSE equipment can make a difference. For instance, all else being equal, when the magazine is 3 or 4 inches from the gun, OF COURSE the reload is going to be quicker than if the magazine is on your side 16 or 18 inches from the gun. For people that don't believe it, some people are just good shooters, and they can shoot pretty well with just about any type of gun. IDPA isn't better than IPSC, and IPSC isn't better than IDPA. They are both different things. If you don't like IDPA, you DON'T HAVE TO SHOOT IT, and, if you don't like IPSC, YOU DON'T HAVE TO SHOOT IT. Neither one will make you a warrior. Both are just shooting sports. I was at an IDPA match just this past weekend listening to someone say, "IPSC is so much more realistic than IDPA. IPSC will make you a gun fighter and IDPA will just killed you killed. I hate IDPA. It is the stupidest (sic) gun sport there is." Two which I replied, "Then why the hell are you here shooting it?" ETA: as a side note, the same guy was also saying, "Taking cover doesn't make any sense. Why would you EVER take cover?"
  8. Thanks. I may be coming up on Friday the 20th to hear Steff Mahan, if anyone is interested. I haven't heard her in a while, but she used to sing really good!
  9. Sorry about that. I thought I posted it in the off topic forum (in fact, I REALLY thought I did). I tried to post it in the "non gun related" forum. Is there a different one where it should have been? Thanks for the info on the bar. I may be coming up (or is it "over") there next weekend to here a friend of mine sing. Quite frankly, my friend is gay, and she plays a lot of gay venues, and I just wanted to be sure I where I was going. (that's not any type of slam or anything, just wanted to find out ahead of time).
  10. Anybody in the Nashvegas area know anything about a bar called 3rd and Lindsley? Just in general, what type of bar is it? Is it just a regular bar and grille?
  11. Shooting at further distances teaches better sight alignment and trigger control. However, one of the students at the range where I work was involved in a "long range" shooting. He had to shoot to protect his children at about 30 yards. He was across the street when someone tried to attack his child (with a knife, IIRC). BUT, it's statistically rare. But, (as others have said) based on what you said, you should have no problem at 25 yards if you have 2-3 inch groups at 15 yards.
  12. I've always been one for doing things the way I think is correct, and taking the procedural and not complaining. If there is a rule I think is stupid, I ignore it. Consequently, I'll probably never win an IDPA match. I do the same when I shoot IPSC. If there is a way I think is more tactically sound to shoot something, I shoot it that way, regardless of whether it is the fastest way. Consequently, I'll never win an IPSC match either. But then again, I don't care. I'm one of the few people the REALLY doesn't care about a trophy or a score.
  13. In my opinion, it would be legal to carry there (assuming entry to the VFW is STRICTLY member or guest of member). I don't think that qualifies as "open to the public."
  14. I post scores from weekly matches in Memphis here: http://www.rrmemphis.com/matches.html
  15. Don't know much about price, but I shot one a couple of years ago, and really liked it. It fit my hand really well, but YMMV, and relatively speaking, didn't seem to have much felt recoil.
  16. "Stocking" and "selling" are irrelevant, especially in relation to this original post. The original post was asking about restaurants that don't sell alcohol but allow patrons to bring it in themselves. I have personally been to a restaurant that allows this, and the waiter will take your bottle and serve the alcohol (as opposed to allowing the customer to pour it for themselves). The law says "serve" and does not mention the other two. However, I agree with the theory. If a business itself doesn't not serve liquor, it shouldn't be illegal.

    what do you do?

Actually, I"m in Memphis. Luckily, Memphis is an odd town. We're supposed to be some sort of music town, but it's hard to find musicians here usually, so it's somewhat easy to find gigs.
  18. TN law seems to say the following: (a) It is an offense for a person to possess a firearm within the confines of a building open to the public where liquor, wine or other alcoholic beverages, as defined in § 57-3-101(a)(1)(A), or beer, as defined in § 57-6-102(1), are served for on premises consumption. It says "served" not "sold."
  19. I know Doc. They're a good bunch of folks up there. If you get a chance to shoot with them, tell Tom Carpenter and Clifford that Robbie from Memphis said hi. The other question, regarding IDPA or IPSC, I shoot both of them, and both of them are fun, and different in many respects. Neither one is better than the other. You get out of it what you want. See this link for a comparison: http://www.rrmemphis.com/op015.html

    what do you do?

I have a variety of jobs. I work in the finance field, although, at the moment, I'm looking for a job. I'm also a part time: shooting instructor trumpet player (I make more money at that than anything) computer consultant (I sell parts more than anything else)
  21. My pleasure! Glad it's helpful. Comments and suggestions always appreciated. Criticisms ignored!
  22. Hey, that's not a bad idea... I'll bet there'd be a market for it!
  23. Yes, I'm "Robert" and thanks. It just happened to be one of those "perfect" runs where everything went just right.
  24. A couple of weeks ago, someone posted a message about running a drill and asked how fast people thought they could run the drill. I said I would post the scores from the match where we ran the drill for comparison. There was a paperwork delay, but here are the scores. The drill as originally posted was 1 target directly in front of you at 3 yards, and one target to your right at 5 yards. Draw, fire five shots to T-1, reload and pivot, and fire five shots to T-2. The drill we ran was very similar. The only difference was, T-2 wasn't at a full 90 degrees, because we were in an indoor range. This was an IDPA match, so the scores are posted in IDPA format. (PD = Points down. 1 point down = .5 seconds added to your raw time) Added note: i wasn't able to get the "spacing" to post correctly, so here's and explanation. the first number is the shooters raw time, the second number is "points down" and the third number is total time with points. Robert 3.87 - 1 - 4.37 Bob 5.68 - 0 - 5.68 Eugene 6.43 - 0 - 6.43 Jerry 5.58 - 2 - 6.58 John 5.08 - 4 - 7.08 Goetz 6.79 - 1 - 7.29 Tad 7.43 - 0 - 7.43 Blake 7.15 - 1 - 7.65 Scott 8.07 - 0 - 8.07 Michael 8.15 - unk - 8.15 Tony 7.27 - 5 - 9.77 David 6.90 - 6 - 9.90 Robb 8.09 - 4 - 10.09 Margo 9.41 - 2 - 10.41 Sophia 10.16 - 1 - 10.66 Robi 10.64 - 1 - 11.14 Christopher 14.62 - 1 - 15.12 Michele 14.90 - 2 - 15.90 Just for reference, my web page where the scores are posted is this: http://www.rrmemphis.com
  25. I use a Sig 229 in .40 or a Sig 226 in 9mm, both of which are my normal carry guns. Neither one has any modifications.
