g26, 10+1 extra 10rnd mag OR maybe a g19 mag with 15 in it as backup.

I agree, I love the way the M&P feels. I'm a Glock guy when it comes to my "needs to go bang every time" self defense gun. No, it is not the most comfortable, not the most visually appealing or even the best shooting, but it is the best OVERALL for me. It does work though. Between the XD, Glock and M&P for ergos, the M&P wins hands down by far. I LOVE the M&P grip, it just feels really well shaped for my hand, and points naturally for me also. I would not buy an XD or a Glock without first trying the M&P out, or at the very least, holding one.

I LOVE my 26. Some advice: don't go adding grip extensions and what not, you DO NOT need your pinky on the gun to shoot well with it at all. Without extensions, this thing is pie to conceal. Also, as far as ammo goes: Here Hydrashocks are generally not considered good performers nowadays because they have a tendency to "clog" up with clothing and not expand properly. My choice is some Double Tap, Speer, Cor Bon, 120something grain +P or heavier. You want the +P in the shorter barrel to help velocity. Double Tap ammo uses Speer GD bullets, and it is some well made stuff. The barrel of the 26 is longer than the XD9sc too. Yet another downside to the XD series, shorter barrels in the same length frame. Not to mention made in Croatia. Fine shootin weapons, but they are just Croatian Glock knock offs with a "warm and fuzzy" grip safety which is redundant and unnecessary IMO. Don't get me wrong, I like them too, just not as much as a Glock.

awesome, congrats! sounds like a good deal to me.

I don't think that would be a good idea for home defense... Go with a 20ga and load it with some good stuff and it will be easier to handle but still have the power required.
-
yep, 590 here as well. (I voted 500 though)

if you can wait, gun shows are the best place. I got a 50cal can in great shape for like 5 bucks or something. There is one coming up at the Agricenter sometime soon, I think it was the beginning of February.

I sure hope that changes at some point in the near future, but I guess I'll just keep dreaming.

Carrying when riding motorcycles or ATVs
RoDan replied to RoDan's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Yeah, this is my concern. Not so much an ND. I think I will most likely end up pocket carrying at least at first, until I can decide on a shoulder rig or if I even want to invest in a decent one. I guess it will depend on funds, and whether or not I can achieve my desired utility/functionality and maintain comfort while riding both on and off road. -
I shoot my 26 better with the stock short mags in it than I do with 19 mags in it. I dont need my pinky to control the gun at all. I think not having my pinky on the grip helps me to be more even in gripping, instead of using too much pinky and "milking" the grip.

I always practice and shoot my 26 with the factory mags. I shoot it better with the factory mags than I do with g19 mags in it. I was torn between the 26 and 27, and decided on the 26 because the 9mm is easier to control in that small of a package over the .40 and it is cheaper to shoot without having to spend money on a conversion barrel.

oh no, I wouldn't use it as a defense method it's too tedious, I was just saying that it makes it more fun as a target gun. Ive found it is a good tool to help with trigger control though, because to stage it you have to pull the trigger. If you can do so while keeping the target in the sight picture it makes it much easier to get used to the full range of the trigger.
-
my 642 is DEAD accurate, it is scary the groups I was able to get with it at 7-10 yards. The trick was proper staging of the trigger. It is fun to shoot once you get good at the trigger, or at least it was for me.

Don't be scared of it, do some testing with an empty chamber for some "worst case" scenarios. In the end, if you are still concerned about that mode of carry, do use it. If you aren't comfortable with it that way, it is best to find another way to carry it.

Carrying when riding motorcycles or ATVs
RoDan replied to RoDan's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
If you don't mind me asking, what was that horror story? I have been seriously considering a smart carry holster. -
Carrying when riding motorcycles or ATVs
RoDan replied to RoDan's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I think the tank bag and shoulder idea. Hip carry could be an issue if one were to take a spill. I ride an FZ1 on the street, and due to the position I'm in, pocket carry would be useless if someone was trying to attack me and take the bike there is noway I'd be able to quickly retrieve the firearm. With shoulder, I could just practice unzipping the jacket quickly. That method of carry would also allow me to carry on my ATV while trail riding in the woods. Keep the ideas/suggestions coming guy, I'm always looking for a different perspective! -
How are you guys carrying when riding in the woods on ATVs/Dirtbikes or while riding street bikes on the road? I'm curious as to the methods of carry because I plan to carry when I ride both on road and off road. thanks -Ross

These for range or what? If all they are is for range use, I'd look at the KCI mags, they are Korean made but they are almost identical to the Glock OEM mags. I have some KCI G19 mags I use for range only in my G26, they work well. I had to smooth a burr or 2 in one of the mags, but they worked even without doing that. I would not trust them as a carry mag, but if you just want some backups for your backups, or need range mags, then I'd go for them because they are cheap.

If I were you, I'd take the class at Range USA, great guys there, great facility. One of the instructors there, Chip, is a great instructor. I took the class from him, and he made it interesting, and he had a great sense of humor and was very knowledgable. He went over all of the law changes in addition to what is said int he horrible DOS video... His sense of humor though made the 8 hours go by quickly. I dont know of any requirement, but they did ask me if I had been a resident at my current address for at least 5 years, but I dont think it was a requirement or anything just for paperwork purposes. You either need certified copy of your birth certificate OR a passport when you go to the DMV after taking the class. Then you go BACK to Range USA and they will fingerprint you (they are one of the few locations here in Mempho that fingerprint, the cost of the fingerprinting is built into the class cost if you take the class from them). Then you just wait. Supposedly you can call the DOS at or around the 30 day mark and act all nice to them and they will probably expedite your application. I havent reached the 30 day point yet, so I haven't called. good luck!

Memphis Class III recommendations?
RoDan replied to ZenDog's topic in National Firearms Act (NFA) Regulated
Larry Langston at G&A is your best bet in Mempho in my opinion, but he is a friend of ours so I guess I'm biased. -
Larry Langston at Guns and Ammo is a great guy to deal with. Old friends with my dad. They go way back with cars and drag racing. Larry drives a white 97 Z28 and the license plate is simply "CLASS 3". good stuff. He showed me his recently acquired Thompson from WWII that will rock n roll, it was in awesome shape, he was proud of it for sure. Heavy SOB though.

You can't buy a handgun out of state...
RoDan replied to mousegunner's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
ah yes, Drake and Zeke. 98.1 the Max. Then they go off talking about going to the Liquor store next to Costco, and that it is not required to have a Costco membership to buy from them, it is a separate bitness and what not.
