  1. I looked these up online and was surprised to find they are still making them. My gal was talking about getting a 10/22 to get back into rifles, but I thought a Mini 14 might be a better alternative. Does anyone know of a place around town that has them. So far as I can tell, all the Walmarts have been out since around Thanksgiving. Thanks
  2. Right there with ya, Tanker.  I went out looking for a decent .22 and thought I was going crazy when I saw the prices ( I could have sworn that Marlin 795 was only 120 a couple of months ago). Lucked out on a Remington 597 on Armslist, otherwise I was about to get one at Academy for around 2.   I talked to the guy at Wally World out in Franklin tonight, and he claimed he had a blued, wood stock version of the 1022 for 199 in the back.
  3. Last year I bought this revolver to add to my collection. I wasn't sure how much I would be carrying it, or if I'd even like to shoot it, so i went a little cheap and bought a Don Hume JIT slide holster to get me through last winter, As it turns out, it shoots great, and would be a good carry piece, if I could find the right holster- the JIT just isn't up for that size/ weight of a gun and has no cant. I figured I'd get a little bit of a jump this year, so I can order a custom made one if needs be.   The size/ weight is almost exactly the same as a S&W K frame Model 19 2"bbl. What are y'alls thoughts?
  4. An early 90's Llama Max I Government 1911 I bought in 2001. A cheap gun, but a great shooter and my go to carry weapon for the winter. Loved the fact that I was shooting this (loaded with Corbon +P's) for my HCP class while everyone else had .22's. Had to sell it, and the Para P12 I had bought to replace it, in '04. Man, I wish I had both of them back now.
  5. I got to check out the Shield 9mm, when I was in On Target trying out my new AR Monday. I really like the way it feels, and the concealability, but I need to drag her by there, or the Armory to get her opinion...
  6.   You're not kidding. I bought that one last year for a Summer/ date carry weapon. I can handle it, but most of my friends that have tried it quit after less than a magazine. I really only carry it if I absolutely have to be sure I'm concealed. If I end up liking the XDS, I might trade it in on a 9mm version (with a little cash, of course).
  7.  So far as I know, she's only shot a gen one Glock and a 22 besides the Bersa and a Taurus TCP I have. We've looked at a couple of options, but AFAIK they were out of the compact version of the Shield when we looked. How are they size wise in comparison to the XDS?
  8. I've always found it best to keep my carry pistol nearby (whatever caliber I happen to be using), because it tends to be the firearm I'm most familiar with. That being said, I try to keep my .357 and/ or 12 guage nearby as a backup "just in case". The AK is just to cumbersome for me when I'm in the wake up haze, and I haven't had my AR long enough to be proficient with it.
  9. I noticed the same sign the last time I went there. The girlfriend pointed it out (under the guise of the searching bags section). I just shrugged, and we went on our way. I've always felt these signs are a way for businesses to straddle the fence, appearing to appease both sides. Meh, I probably won't go back there any time soon, since I don't go to the movies all that often, but I do think it's a shame to see these kinds of postings popping up.
  10. Thanks for all of the thoughts/ advice guys. I know she would be comfortable shooting the .45, but I hadn't given thought to her being able to rack the slide (something she has had issues with on my mouse gun). She has shot my Bersa .45 several times, and loves it, but gripwise it's a much different feel than the XDS. She started out looking for a .40, but was having problems finding one to fit her hands- she's only 5'0", and really liked the small profile of the XDS. I may try and steer her toward the 9mm version.   I appreciate the offer for letting us try yours out Big K, but with our crazy work schedules, it would be difficult to know when we could meet up. I'm going to try and get us by Nashville Armory sometime and rent their's. (thanks for the heads up Supa).   I figure, worst case scenerio is she tries it, buys it, and hates it, and I'll end up buying it off of her as an upgrade from the Bersa... so it's  a win win for me.
  11. I came across a couple of the Springfield XDS's up at GnL in Hendersonville and was wondering if y'all had had any experience with them. Tried a forum search, but nothing came up. It would actually be something for the girlfriend, but after shooting some of my pistols, she's leaning heavily toward the 45 version over the 9. How reliable are they, and how do they compare over all to the XDCs?
  12. I know I'm a little late on this thread, but I had to give a +1 for these pistols. I have a Mk1 that was my great grandad's. I love to shoot it, and as mentioned before, it'll feed almost anything. Definitely a bear to disassemble though.
  13. Academy in Smyrna had about 25 bricks (525 count) a week ago on Saturday. They sold out in about 10 minutes (as long as it took for the line to get to the registers). Got lucky and scored the last one...
  14.   Thanks for the links. I've been meaning to look up the specifics on preemption. Good info.
  15. Good to hear. I've been down there a few times now, with only one minor incident. Fortunately, it worked out all right, but I sure wish I HAD been carrying that time. Just sheer luck things didn't go downhill. As for Chuck E Cheese.. I avoid it like the plague anyway.
  16. Thanks for the info Erik. I'm not a big drinker, and never really even think about it when I'm carying, but it's good to know their laws are fairly lax. If you look around the internet long enough, you can really come up with some horror stories about carrying down there (probably true of any state).
  17. I'm heading down to Tampa/ Saint Pete (by way of GA) for about a week. I'm just curious about how strict FL is on concealment, with printing and so on... I know Georgia is an open/ concealed state, so not too worried there, but I've heard that in the past Florida could be kind of a pain. Anyone been down there lately?
  18. Since 2001.. going on 12 years. Hard to believe all of the changes that have been made in that time....
  19. +1 on One Second After. It's a great read.   I've always liked Alas, Babylon myself. It's an older book, but still interesting.
  20. Great page! I linked it up on FB for some of my "less gun friendly" family.
  21. Mine was posted, Oasis Church in South Nashville. They had a "No WEAPONS" sign, with the circle slash over a gun and a knife. I guess that covered all of the bases.
  22. I can see what you mean about the P in the pics versus on the actual rifle. It does seem that way. By the way, anyone ever have dealings with Numrich gun parts? I received the breech bolt in yesterday, rusted, worn, and a big chunk missing beside the extractor. I called and sent it back immediately. Hopefully will have it exchanged by Friday.
  23. Thanks all. The markings have been driving me nuts for about 12 years now.. Someone along the way removed the plates in the stock that would let me know for sure which state and what service... I do like the idea of Prison System, but I'm pretty sure it's an FS.. Good idea on the springs TNWNGR, I hadn't thought of that. I ordered the entire firing pin, extractor, breech bolt assembly from Numrich, and it should be here Monday. The firing pin looked pretty worn...I'm guessing about 70+ years worth of shooting would do that.
  24. And after pulling it apart.. @Greg Thanks for the vote of confidence on these guns. I've been primarly a pistol shooter, aside from the AK, but I think it's past time to branch into rifles. @Caster I'll definitley keep that in mind about the ammo. Any particular brands that you've had good experience with?
