  1. With moly I was able to shoot 100-200 rounds in a day without cleaning....but the problem is I've shot hundreds of un-coated bullets as well with no ill effects either and no cleaning......well, I ran a bore snake through it a few times. I don't check accuracy when I'm in the dog towns....I just shoot until I end up back at the truck. The thing about using moly is the fact that instead of a little copper build up in the barrel you get moly build up. I understand this is fine to a certain extent and is what you want to happen, but the little carbon ring that forms just ahead of the cartridge neck in the chamber is a pain to get out. None of my rifles copper really bad anyway. I just decided it was snake oil and moved on.....But you might like it. That's what this whole hobby is about. Trying different things. Those Savages are some pretty sweet guns. Tough to beat one for the price.
  2. I tried moly out about 12 years ago. No noticeable difference. I went back to naked bullets. Those 50 grain bullets will work fine in your .223 What is the twist rate of your Remington? I went prairie dog shooting last year and used a 223. I carried an AR and a TC Encore prohunter both in 223. I shot 40 grain V-maxes that worked well. Your 50 grainers will perform just as well and be accurate. North Dakota is a beautiful place believe it or not.
  3. I load for the 38 special with Unique. 148 grain LRN in front of 4.9 grains of Unique with a hefty crimp works well. Your load should be fine if you straighten out your weight problem. There is a lesson to be learned here......ALWAYS, ALWAYS, check the barrel if the round didn't sound right. Stuck bullets can cause some serious problems. Here's my snubby
  4. Everyone should have at least one 1911. They are works of art.
  5. Buttonhook, thanks for sharing. That is a beautiful gun. I'm jealous! P.S. My other hobby (photography) has taken a toll on my gun funds. A new DSLR and a few lenses will do that to ya. Needless to say, I'll probably run into what I'm looking for with no way to buy it....ouch
  6. Also, if you can get the kind of targets like what you see in the picture it will give her a smaller area to aim at. Plus you will have more targets when one gets shot up.
  7. I just had a similar experience. My mom has been bugging me to take her shooting for a while now so I figured it was time. She hasn't shot in years so it was a re-learning experience. At 62 she feels the need to be able to defend herself if need be....I agree. A few months back I showed up at their house (I live in TN and them in IL) with a new to me 3 screw single six. She had one of her own 20 years back and got all nostalgic on me and commandeered the darn thing. I couldn't argue so the gun became hers. She started out shooting the Ruger and really enjoyed it. Loading and unloading it was a little tedious but she was doing fine after a few cylinders. Next I let her shoot my Neos with a bushnell red dot....It's a miracle that I still own the gun after that. Needless to say she loved it. Her groups shrunk significantly with the aid of the red dot. She said "now I know why all the old people like to have a scope".....I got a kick out of that. Continuing on I let her try my S&W 10-5 with some mild 38 special loads. After a little apprehension she really enjoyed the extra umph over the 22 lr's. If I were a criminal I'd be scared. She had no problem blasting the center of the silhouette with that little snubby. Next she got to shoot my G17. She liked that large auto over the smaller 10-5 revolver. I was amazed at how well she handled the Glock. It's a little "chunky" but she did just fine. I'm going to give you one pointer that will make the shooting experience much more fun. Double hearing protection! My mother was very intimidated when we walked into the range. Other people were shooting and it was very load. It's hard to concentrate on hitting a target when the muzzle blast from your gun and other peoples weapons is making you flinch. Now, I'm not sure if you are going to be shooting indoors or out, we were indoors. Either way good, double hearing protection will make this easier. I agree with renting a 22. My 38 special and G17 were about all mom could handle. That G21 will probably be very intimidating. Good luck and I hope she enjoys herself. It feels great to enjoy a day of shooting with loved ones.
  8. Sorry about the conflicting information....My idea of an "accurate representation" would be an original with matching numbers. I understand that price will come into play but it's not really a factor. It's not going to be a safe queen. If it's already been fired there's no sense in letting it sit...IMHO. Thanks for the Argentine M1927 recommendation. I'll take a look. As my gun collection has evolved I appreciate the older ones much more.
  9. A reloading bench needs to be very sturdy (heavy) to keep it from rocking around. You'll be disappointed if you use a flimsy table or bench. You don't want everything on the bench wobbling around every time you pull the handle on your press. A heavy counter top type material is what I would recommend.
  10. I am considering purchasing one of these and was wondering who has one. I'm not new to 1911's by any means. I have a Kimber Eclipse Custom II that is an awesome weapon and have shot many other 1911's. I just want an accurate representation of an original model. What's your take on the oldies? Here's my current 1911

    Glock?

I love my G17 and G26. I considered selling the 17 to get an M&P but just decided to keep the Glock and add the M&P to the collection (sooner or later). I just couldn't bring myself to part with the G17. It is 100% reliable and just begs to be shot.
  12. Yup reloading is a lot of fun.....The only problem is that I find myself trying to shoot up all my ammo just so I can reload it again.
  13. I was born in Detroit....lived there a while then in MN, ND and IL.
  14. I've been shooting, hunting and reloading for a long time now. I hope to learn from you guys and maybe pass on a few things I've learned over the years. I'm a northern transplant to TN......so go easy on this yankee I should mention that my current collection is pretty small compared to what it was years ago, but I still manage ......Kimber Eclipse Custom II, Gp100, Beretta Neos, 3 screw Ruger single six, S&W 10-5, Glock 17, Glock 26, T/C Pro hunter 22-250 and 223, DPMS Bull 20, Marlin Model 60, Anschutz 64 MPR, and a Remington 1100 LT 20 magnum....oh yeah and an RWS .22 cal pellet rifle. I reload for 38/357, 45 acp, 223 and the 22-250.

    Ruger gp-100

Mine works pretty darn good with a scope. The open sights of a GP100 are great too.
