1. Yesterday afternoon I was at a local gun store.  There was a person standing at the counter waiting for a return from TBI on a gun purchase.  A few minutes later, four local police come into the shop and ask the owner if he called about someone with a warrant.  The owner said "no".  The police look around and focused on the person waiting on an approval from TBI.  It turns out that this person had an outstanding warrant.   I have not mentioned the store or city because there are too many thing I am going to conjecture about here.  It appeared that TBI found this warrant and contacted the police department in the jurisdiction of the gun store.     The local police handled the situation very well.  They were very low key and courteous  to all including the arrestee who was handcuffed and hauled off to find out more about this warrant.   None of the police appeared to be aware of the exact dynamics of what really happened.  They had received a call from their dispatcher that there was someone in the store with an outstanding warrant and confirmed this by interviewing the arrestee.  I explained it to the last officer before he  left and noted that if would really be great if somehow the arrestee could be informed that the gun store did not call the police.   It all went down VERY quickly.
2. Last Thursday, I went to church with my brother, a long time member of that church, Lone Oak Baptist Church just outside Paducah, KY.     It was a celebration of the 2d amendment.  The first thousand members of the public at large that showed up got a free steak dinner.  After dinner and a great speaker, 25 guns were given away by drawing.  It was a good guess that 1,300 people showed up in all.   https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.643705952333807.1073741827.180789028625504&type=1
3. Yes, you may.  I have had the same issue of Va. residency and TN location as you.  One of the most savvy FFLs I know in the area is Phil Mitchell at Bellshire Hardware.  Call him at 615 860 4212.  $35 per transfer including TBI.
4. Have you slugged your gun yet?  the 'as cast-as coated' diameter will work very well in .38/.357s too.  You have some very good looking bullets there.
5. I have loaded M-80 pulldowns, that is .30 cal 147 gr. FMJBTs backwards in .30-30.  I only shot one batch of them, over 16 grs. of 2400.  I am going to guess a velocity of about 1600 pfs.  Accuracy was OK.  But these were tightly crimped jacketed bullets.  The BT feature of the bullet offered better ballistic profile than a flat base.
6. You need a smarter bank.  I do not have any NFA trusts, but a trust is a trust.  I have trusts that own real estate and other assets.  As needed, I apply for employer ID numbers and open bank accounts.  My bank only asks for a copy of the trust indenture and the EIN before opening an account.     Personally, I would have a bank account for your trust to preserve the legal fiction that the trust and it's bank account and other assets are a distinct entity that is not you.  I would find a friendly bank where you could leave a hundred bucks in the account and not be charged monthly fees.
7. A 'tax break' is something you can declare on your income tax returns.     Foreign workers are just that "foreign", meaning another country.  Our workers, working for an American subsidiary of Bosch, Siemens, etc, do not pay any taxes to Germany, although they work for a nominal German company.   How would you tax a company that exported a job?  Per head, per unit of revenue earned in another country?
8. RE:  Milsurps   I have not seen a milsurp at a reasonable price since I bought my Naval luger from S.Kein and sons, via mailorder, in 1965, for $39.99.  I bought a high number 1903 for $29.99 the following year.   Buying a new Ruger American rifle or Savage Axis makes more sense than spending $300 on a rusty mauser in a non-walmart caliber.
9. I keep hearing obama and others in his party say "we've got to eliminate the tax breaks that businesses get for exporting jobs".   Does anyone know exactly what these tax breaks are?  I am not in the tax compliance business, but am 'conversant' with tax laws that pertain to the businesses that I am around, and cannot find a single exemption, deduction or credit for "exporting jobs".   What is he talking about?
10. Since RK cancelled Hendersonville and given the fact that Goodman is past my gag limit, I have started looking for other shows nearby.   Saturday, I went to the Midwestpromotions show at the armory in Murray, KY.  It was a small venue but absolutely packed with vendors and attendees.  There were some reasonable prices on guns and three tables of reloading equipment.  It also had the 'feel' that gunshows used to have before they turned into flea markets.   Midwest is doing another show in Paducah on Feb 8-9.  I may go to that one.  If not I will go to the show at  Dixon that weekend.  It has been getting better.   I am thinking about Shelbyville this weekend.  Does anyone care to rate it?
11.   The pot has graduated heat setting from 1 to 9.  Using a given setting on the scale will give wide variances as much as 30-40 degrees plus/minus.  When you plug the pot into the PID, set the pot on the highest setting and let the PID control the heat.
12. tnguy,    you rascal!  A trip to harbor freight for me is 40 miles round trip and about a hundred bucks out of my fun fund, just on impluse buys.  Now I have to look for the ads to get a coupon for an IR remote sensing thermometer.     I might as well order one of everything they carry and have it delivered for 6.99.  That will prevent me from putting a couple of thousand miles on the odometer in the next couple of years.   Hmmm..................on the other hand, I could just get another PID controller for the hot plate.
13. The infra red remote sensing thermometers, like the one at Harbor freight, usually don't work too well with molten metals.  Most molten metals like lead form a 'skin' over the top that is not the same temp as the mass of molten metal.
14. For anyone interesting in a DIY PID controller, here is a very exhaustive discussion, with good illustrations and diagrams over on castboolits.   http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?115724-Project-PID-on-Lee-Pro-4-20-furnace   I chose to buy one outright.  It would appear that the maker of my controller charged me about $40 for assembly and his expertise above the cost of his parts.     I started casting with no one having to put out fires, restore electrical service or getting electrocuted.
15.     If you are thinking about casting, read, the reread this post a couple of times.  I have been casting for a long time and I see something in this post that I need to do next session.   I keep my molds on a single eye electric hotplate while I am casting.  I can see by reading above, that sometimes my molds are too hot.   Next session I am going to set the PID for 650 degrees and not heat my molds so much.
16. TNguy,   Mechanically, or digitally, as the case may be, I do not know how to calibrate the digital thermometer linked to above.  It's not covered in my instruction booklet.  However, a known source, regarding temperature, is ice water.  Fill a glass with ice to the brim, fill with water.  In ten minutes the water temp will be exactly 33 degrees f. for about the next 10 minutes.  Insert your thermometer and adjust to 33 degrees.   This is a trick that health inspectors used to use to test the calibrations of stem thermometers in restaurants.  But it still works.
17.   The device that you have linked to is a digital thermometer.  In fact, I have one exactly like it.  However it is not a multimeter and it will not control the current to your pot to maintain a constant temp.  If you buy one of these to measure the temps of your casting process, you will also need a stainless steel probe with K type plug.  The two probes that come with the thermometer are for inserting in ovens, AC ducts, etc.  They will  not survive the molten metal in a casting pot.   In the top photo, you can see the coiled cord of the K probe from the  item you linked to.   I am pleased with mine, I have used it for a lot more applications than tracking temps in my casting pot.  I just can't figure out how to calibrate it should the need arise.
18.   It's pretty simple to set the temps to your desired temp.  Just like setting a digital clock.  A lot of casters think that 700 degrees f. is the optimum temp.  I was not pleased with the appearance of the bullets at that temp however.  Next session I will try 750 degrees.
19. $300 with 9 boxes of factory ammo.     With luck, I can restore it to bubba truck gun condition for another $100.  This is the gun I am going to take to the bayous of Arkansas for pig and deer hunting.  The 1:12" twist of 94 barrels make them very good cast bullet guns.  If, I can get enough gunk out of the barrel to find lands and grooves.
20. Try it again!
21. It is thought, by some, that metallic foil covering your head will protect you from mind control radiation.   This is alien disinformation!!!!!        Foil inside your hat or over your head AMPLIFIES mind control radiation.  The aliens have taken over cell towers with virtual repeaters that send out mind control messages from outer space.   BEWARE!!!!!!!!  No foil!!!!!!!  This website is total BS and alien disinformation:   http://zapatopi.net/afdb/
22. A traffic stop in Arkansas will show them your TN handgun carry permit on the computer screen in the police car.  Don't know where else, but I saw a red bar at the bottom of the screen saying "TN handgun carry permit" along with the picture that shows on my TN driver's license photo and vital stats and restrictions.  The trooper figured the only dope in the car was me and sent me on the way, saying 'fasten your seat belt and be safe".   sure is a lot of tinfoil on this thread.
23. Someone a lot more tech savvy than me is going to have to explain why some of you can see the pictures and some can't.   If you love and respect guns, maybe it's just as good that you can't see the abuse inflicted on this one.
24. Dolomite,   It was preset at 700 degrees.  Next casting session, I am going to experiment with a higher temp.   What have you found the optimum temp to be for wheelweight alloy?   I am not technical enough to understand everything about the device.  Apparently it is the marrage of a solid state relay, a PID unit and a probe that appears to have a K type connections.  It seems like the sum of all these parts is well under a hundred dollars, but I don't have a clue how to pick the right parts or marry them together.  I got this one from frozone at castboolits.  It was $185 plus shipping.     If you build one, share with us.
25. Yesterday, I bought the saddest looking Model 94 Winchester you have ever seen. It is a post 64 model that had been 'customized' by a former owner and allowed to sit in his barn for a couple of years. Here is a picture of the 'custom' buttlplate installed. Next is a shot of the starboard side showing the condition of the finish. Most of the early post 94s had a very poor finish that could get like this one in the picture in a hurry. If you have a good eye, you will notice that the scope is upsidedown. Maybe it was do so to make the rig more streamlined and not catch the turret on brush. Here is a view of the port side. The side mount was loose and a lot of rust had accumulated under it. And finally, a picture of the entire gun. Not a good photo, but it shows placement of the upper sling band. I cannot imagine slinging the gun with the butt below your knees. Maybe it was to make the hunter more streamlined while breaking brush. So now the work begins. I am also looking for a factory buttplate, plastic or metal and the original length screws to plug the holes where the scope mount was screwed into the side of the receiver. I am soaking the receiver in kerosene for a couple days so I can get some of the rust freckling under control. This is going to be my part time project for the rest of the winter. I hope I can make the old girl presentable enough to go back out in public again.
