  1. Did this guy work in a gun store?  It sounds like the overweight guy with the bad wig that used to blow cigarette smoke in your face at Gun City.  Yes, the one that carried a revolver cross draw in a nylon holster, and was an "expert" and a "national shooting champion".  Yes, the one that intimated that he had won lots of gun fights and had always walked away after smokin' a bunch of bad guys.   If I can find the article again, I will post a link.  I read about velocity changes using the same powder charges but going from a cast lubed bullet to one that was powder coated.  In this article, there was an increase in velocity for the PC bullet.  The author suggested this was because of REDUCED friction from a PC bullet over a cast and lubed bullet.   As always, start your load at the published minimum and work up gradually until you get the best accuracy.  Let your gun tell you which is the best load.
  2. Glenintenn   Bingo!  They have one that looks like it will work.  After the conversion in 64, Winchester shipped the 1894 30-30 with 4 different shaped and sized buttplates.   Thanks for the tip.  They are shipping mine out today.
  3. This looks promising.  I will call as soon as they open.  Thanks a lot.
  4. If anyone sees an ad for a buttplate with 2 7/8 between screw holes, shoot me a link PM.   What blank material would be good for making your own buttplate?  Plastic or rubber preferably.   Thanks for all the responses.
  5. Thanks guys, I have given up trying to find one for sale from a dealer.  My best hope is that someone has one in their junk box or has a suggestion of what material I can fashion one from.   Pacymyer has one for the AE that will cost almost $50 by the time it hits my door step.  I had rather have  cheaper stock to work with if I have to fashion one by hand with a sander and grinder.
  6. I rescued a badly abused 1894 Winchester in 30-30.  It is a post 64 model made in 1971.     When I got it, it had a very badly fitted recoil pad.  I need a buttplate but there appear to be non available.  The buttplate is 4.7 inches high by 1.60 inches apart.  The screw holes are 2 7/8" apart. Every surplus or reproduction plate available has screw holes 3 1/2 inches apart and over 5 inches tall.   What would be a good material to start with to fabricate my own buttplate?  Does anyone make blank plates?     The buttstock has a slight cresent shaped curve to it.   Thanks
  7. Is there anyone in the N'vill/boro area that does Glock grip reductions?  I want to make a Glock 19 fit my daughter's small hands.     Thanks
  8. If these dirtbags came in my business I would throw them out at gunpoint. These people are rabble, they are not NRA members or members of any community that I would choose to associate with. This is "Open Carry Texas" at a Target store in Texas. Looking at the obama tee shirt and package of oreos he is holding up to make a political statement, this guy and his cohorts are from bloomberg, brady or organizing for america. Maybe ACORN. Target bases it's business on soccer moms. Soccer moms do not know or care what your gun rights are and are frightened when scum like this in the photo parade around a store they are shopping in. Soccer moms WILL vote for any politician who promises to "protect" them from evil looking men carrying evil looking rifles. To preserve our gun rights, do not provoke the soccer moms or retailers in their stores. Carry discretely and politely. Do not be one of the reasons that our rights are being stripped away from us. Anybody remember a tool named embody or emboy or something like that going around Nashville a couple of years ago provoking park rangers and police by openly carrying? He and Open Carry Texas are more dangerous to your rights than the brady idiots. A lot of critical thinking and situational awareness are in order.
  9. Not adapting to the internet is going to kill a lot of small businesses.  A good example is West Plains Pawn and Gun in West Plains, Mo. to name just one that I am familiar with.  They are not much larger than ASP in their sales area, but they got internet savvy and have a much larger presence on the net and appear to be successful and prosperous.   I had an interesting conversation with an owner of an Ace Hardware store.  He claims to be able to compete head to head with Lowes because of their good customer service.  But he says he is getting hurt by the internet.  People want the convenience of home delivery and some just don't want to interact with other humans.  Even though the price is comparable weighing sales tax against shipping charges.   Local gun stores have a LOT of competition from chains and the internet.  It seem that a lot of them compete with themselves with sales prevention techniques that include bad customer service.
  10. I am usually the last to get the word, but I went by ASP (academy of self-protection?) today and found they had gone out of business.   There was a snarky sign in the window saying that they were the victim of "price point shoppers".  I guess that means people who are looking for the best price on guns/ammo/range time?   I feel their pain.  Small gun shops appear to be a thing of the past because folks can get a better deal somewhere else like Budsgunshop.com.  Natural selection is a brutal game.
  11. Thanks for the many offers.  I am in Bellevue and am in contact with Broomhead.   I will take pictures and post before and after.   Thanks again.
  12. I want to cut the gas check shank out of a couple of Lee 2 cavity molds, C-312-155 and C-309-150F.   Does anyone in the Nashville area have a drill press?  I will buy the 5/16 reamer or drill bit needed to cut out the shank.   A 'gunsmith' in the area offered to do this for $90.  This included "setup" charges.  (in my view, this amounts to a very effective 'sales prevention tool')   Thanks
  13. Do the rifle bullets have the shank for a gas check?  Would plain based bullets be better for PC?

  15. Garfula, there are as many hundred scientists who would argue for this theory as would argue against it.  Seems to be a hotly debated subject on a very passionate level in academic circles.   Without arguing the science, or lack thereof, let's refer to your semantics.  You opine that they came from Mongolia or points further west.  If that is the case, they cannot be "natives".
  16. There have been no "native americans" alive for a good 5,000 years.  They disappeared about 5,000 years after the mongols crossed the land bridge and invaded N. America.  The exact name that taxonomists and anthropologsts use for the American Indians is "mongoloid".  Derived from their Mongolian heritage.  Some of us are negroids, some of us are caucasoids, they are mongoloids.  Nothing offensive, just good scientific and technical terminology.  But it gives you a hint as to their derivations.   If the government can steal your intellectual property (patents and trademarks) they can steal you bank accounts, lawn mowers and big screen TVs.  Stealing is generally defined as illegally taking your property without permission or depriving you of  it's lawful use.   If the term were really offensive, the team would fail in the marketplace.  The marketplace being a better judge of most things than politicians.   There is no freedom to be not offended.
  17. 3.7-4.0 grs.  You will NOT go back to bullseye.  My standard load these days is a 200 gr. SWC over 3.9 grs. Clays.  Works great with a 16 pound spring in my 1911s.
  18. Has anyone ever heard of Rio Ammo before their plant in McEwan, TN blew up yesterday?  Will this further restrict ammo supplies.  The website claims that they make powder too.   Some folks never get the word, like me.     http://www.rioammo.com/index.html
  19.     Actually a standard ton is 2,240 pounds   A metric ton is 2,204 pounds    A short ton is 2,000.  This is the standard used in interstate commerce and most commodities.

  21.   My brother and I have both loaded extensively, with good results on a Herter "C" type press that my father bought 70 years ago.  It will not wear out.  I have a Rockchucker which will out last the next three generation of my family.  My old RCBS Jr. is in the hands of it's 3d owner.  No better press to learn on and it will do for 90% of reloading.  Don't pinch pennies on your first press, make it your last press.
  22. Check this link to Rocky Mountain Reloading.   These are plated bullets (who cares plated or FMJ?)   The prices quoted are delivered to your door.  There is no sales tax, but you do declare and pay your TN use tax, right?   Yes, they are good bullets, I have loaded and shot thousands of them in many calibers.       $85 for their house brand 115 RN or Berry's.   http://www.shop.rmrbullets.com/9mm-115-Grain-Plated-Hollow-Point-1000-Count-9mm-115-HPP-1000-Ct.htm;jsessionid=581DC86B40292CDB77B79AEACEDB14AB.m1plqscsfapp01   $95 for 115 Hollow points.   http://www.shop.rmrbullets.com/9mm-115-Grain-Plated-Hollow-Point-1000-Count-9mm-115-HPP-1000-Ct.htm;jsessionid=581DC86B40292CDB77B79AEACEDB14AB.m1plqscsfapp01
  23. My favorite dealer does not attempt to stock .22rf.  If he puts it out at cost, some of his little customers still accuse him of "gouging".  Anyone in business knows you have to deal with petty people, you just find a way to cope.   Everything Weapons is not my kind of place, but I will not judge them until I know what they paid for the ammo.     I am teaching a grandson how to shoot.  We are using a .357 MAX handi rifle.  I cast and reload rounds for lots less than .22 ammo can be had for these days.  I refuse to play stupid.  I also notice a lot more used .22 rifles on dealer's racks.
  24. Meters very well and shoots clean.  4.0-4.4 grs. under a 200 gr. SWC in .45ACP is a dream to shoot.
