She may have caught it before it went off. Although I did hear a low battery beep in a bedroom sensor prior to going to bed. I just didn't want to mess with it in the dark. A system test ain't a bad idea.

Around 9 o'clock last night the power went out as the wife was heating up some noodles on the stove. It was a rolling blackout or, more likely, some drunken driver hit a pole. Three hours later the juice was still off so there wasn't much to stay up for. I finally drifted off after 30 minutes, but just dozing. At about 2 a.m. I was awakened to the alarming voice of the wife saying, "Oh, my God!.....Oh, my God!" I instinctively knew she wasn't talking to me. Turns out the noodle pot was left on the electric burner. When the power was restored, the water boiled off and the noodles started to burn. Smoke filled the kitchen pretty quickly and she just happened to wake up at the right time. As it says in the Psalms, "He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep." I'm thankful that He kept an eye peeled on our house, too.

Yes, they vote but thankfully are too old to reproduce. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNixl0qZShA

You would have liked his opposition to a government welfare system, too. http://www.101bananas.com/library2/crockett.html

Walt Disney, that's who! I had to drive up near the pointer on Tennessee's map today and saw a sign luring tourists to visit the birthplace of Davy Crockett. I decided to stop in, just to see if he was "born on a mountaintop in Tennessee," like the song goes. NOT!!!! He was born in a valley on the banks of the Nolichucky River in Greene County. I mean, the nearest mountain is over a mile from that place. It's located in Davy Crockett State Park....evidently his parents named Davy after the park so they wouldn't have to pay rent. This really cuts me to the quick.....I squandered two bucks back in the 50s for a stinkin' Davy coonskin cap that shed hair all over me after about a week. And the plastic replica of Ol' Betsy that fired Greenie Stick 'em caps started splittin' right up the middle after just a few swings and pops on my buddies' heads while playing Defend the Alamo. But I never figured that Walt Disney would lie to us. But you tell me......does Fess Parker look anything like this? He looks more like my third grade teacher, Mrs. Grundy. It's a wonder the Mexicans didn't let him leave the Alamo with the rest of the women, for cryin' out loud. I really don't know how long it's gonna take for me to get over this. I'm even beginning to suspect that Disney's stupid submarine didn't go down 20,000 leagues under the sea after all.

He always delivered a Top A performance. I still like seeing him in "Requiem for a Heavyweight" alongside Anthony Quinn and Jackie Gleason.

My Civil War Rifle odyssey (UPDATE AT BOTTOM)
gun sane replied to a topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
That's great news, Tanker......not many people get the same treatment by experts. This should make your prize all the more valuable. Of course, you still may want to cut 'er down and make a sporter out of it. :D -
My laptop is W7 and my only complaints has to do with the machine itself, not the software. I've got XP on my desktop, so I'll probably just look at a W7 upgrade to make them similar. The wife has an Ipad and loves it.....I can't stand the darned thing.

XP users have been getting a lot of nag popups warning that their OS is going the way of the dodo bird. Microsoft is now leading us into the squeeze chute for Windows 8.1, which I am told is a marvel for computers with touch screens. Others say it's about as friendly as Vista and shingles. Should we listen to the doomsday geeks and upgrade or keep on crunching with XP without tech support? What's out there that promises better days?

In the near future, "Smith" will be dropped from the company name. The Wesson moniker is expected to continue with perhaps another name joining the title. An April Fool's joke maybe? http://www.guns.com/2014/04/01/smith-wesson-drop-smith-company-name/

Silver Stacking & Other Precious Metals
gun sane replied to Wills's topic in Survival and Preparedness
We didn't mess with the gold rush.....too big to trade for everyday things. Silver and ammo will do and any skills you have that would be in demand. -
I'll join the chorus for the Taurus TCP. I've owned two with serial numbers ending in B and C (still got one) and both stood me in good stead. I understand the earlier A models had some problems but it appears Taurus worked those out.

A 17-year-old who owns a Mosin Nagant often asks me to take him to the range. A few days ago he only had a few rounds of 7.62x54R so we stopped to shop at two stores. One had none at all and the other had only the high priced hunting stuff--no FMJ. Today I found some Russian-made Wolf steel cased at 13.99 per box of 20, so I picked him up two boxes. This got me to wondering if Russia moving on Ukraine and Obama's threats of sanctions might cause the Russian ammo pipeline to dry up. There's still the American made, but this kid's got a tight budget.

Ordinarily I'd advise you to stand up to your wife and show her who's boss. But since she has the revolver..... :nervous:

Invasive carp? Sounds like invasive crap.

The scary part is that one judge can restrict a freedom that Americans have relied upon for hundreds of years. How can the constitutional process which requires an accountable system of checks and balances give so much judicial weight to a single appointed judge?
-
The liberals finally went there.....the nitwit 9th Circus Court judge ruled that the Second Amendment doesn't apply to ammunition and San Francisco can ban the sale of hollow point ammo. Sure SF wants to stop crime, but you've got to give the thugs a sporting chance. http://www.guns.com/2014/03/26/federal-court-upholds-san-frans-tough-ammo-ban-gun-laws/

You have the say so of the guy who wrote a few questionable histories of Earp and what he says the family said. Isn't that proof enough to lay down a quarter million dollars?

Mysteries are enough to stoke a fire nowadays. The serious collectors may stay away, but there will be plenty of wannabes to start a good bidding war.

Lumber_Jack's moving to Nashville (need a job too)
gun sane replied to Lumber_Jack's topic in General Chat
Sorry to hear you're leaving God's country.......but if you have to get rid of stuff for the move, I'll be happy to take any guns, ammo and related stuff. Just my way of helping out.... -
As someone who hasn't attained all the goals I've reached for, I can empathize with this young man who wants very much to join the military and honor our country and his family traditions. But putting on a purchased uniform and presenting yourself as one serving in sacrifice just does not cut it. IMHO, this is another instance in which feelings are supposed to trump formality. There are plenty of military support groups which civilians desiring to aid our armed forces may join. Those who wear the uniform without earning it demean it. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014/03/22/the-civilian-who-provoked-outrage-after-wearing-a-military-uniform-speaks-out-and-what-you-learn-might-change-your-opinion-of-him/

Good ol' Dub Taylor, one of the best character actors to ever bless the screen. You might know him from hundreds of western flavored movies, including his roles as Cannonball in the B-movies, C.W. Moss' father in Bonnie and Clyde and the town preacher in the opening scenes of The Wild Bunch. I got to spend some time back in the '70s with him and his son, Buck, who played Newly on Gunsmoke. There's no finer pair of gentlemen you'll ever meet. Dub's gone on to his reward now, and Buck is a highly respected western artist.
