Question about Federal law and parks that schools use.

Just watched channel 7 news out of Jackson. They announced that the city of Martin had voted to opt out of park carry.

They said that one reason is because there is a federal law that prevents schools from using parks where firearms are allowed. Apparently one of the local schools uses a city park.

Does anyone know of this law and/or can link to it?

Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association backs off 'no guns' policy for Spring Fling

MURFREESBORO — The Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association is backing off its earlier stance regarding guns in parks.

TSSAA Executive Director Bernard Childress had said last week that the Spring Fling sports festival that determines championships in five spring sports would not be conducted at parks where firearms were permitted.

The Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro quoted Childress saying on Tuesday that the group’s attorneys had advised it not to take a stance on a new state law that goes into effect Sept. 1.

The statute allows pistol permit holders to carry weapons in state and local parks unless local governmental bodies opt out.

Childress said TSSAA’s attorneys are determining whether it can bar guns from a state tournament where it charges admission.

Looks like the TSSAA is going to allow play. Wouldn't that be considered a school event?

TSSAA is a private corporation... not a school board...

I'm not aware of any federal law, but state law still bans carrying in parks which are used by a school board (a whole list of college and education type boards).

My guess is that the park is only closed to carry while the school board is using it, but the law isn't completely clear on that fact.
