I can never understand why people continually do things like this. If they knowingly put themselves in harms way then they ought to be responsible for getting themselves out.

SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq — The U.S. State Department said Friday it was investigating reports that three American tourists have been detained by Iranians while hiking near the border in the self-ruled Kurdish region in northern Iraq.

....were arrested after entering Iranian territory without permission.

U.S. helicopters were buzzing overhead and many U.S. Humvees had moved into the Kurdish city of Halabja to search for the Americans, said a Kurdish border force official.

Good old Halabja. Who wouldn't want to visit the town that Saddam bombed with sarin and cyclosarin in the 1980's because they were the primary staging point for Iranian special op's units working in Iraq.

Make sure to bring bottled water and MRE's, they still have a very high rate of unusual cancers and nuero disorders.

I'll take anything over the bean and rice buritto's. If you ever deploy again, pack some spices.

Namely minced garlic, tobasco, and a LOT of salt.

Northern Iraq is actually quite peaceful and has many American missionaries as well as other workers. I'm guessing they were probably missionaries working with local nomadic tribesmen when the Iranians captured them. Just a guess, but what I know of that area and the fact that there were 3 (typical traveling pattern of missionaries) that would be my guess. Not mentioning they are missionaries is probably to limit the wrath they might encounter at the hands of their captures.

Again just a theory, but my Dad worked with a local group in Nashville called Classical School of the Medes. Classical School of the Medes - Index

A Forest Gump moment for sure. I really hope their relatives etc do cry to the media and the State Dept for help.

Screw them. I say we abandon them. What kind of liberal friggin' idiot American thinks it's a good idea to go hiking on the Iraqi/ Iran border. They deserve whatever the Iranians have in store for them.

No, they weren't missionaries.

According to the news report I heard today, they are a couple that like to take "adventurous" vacations according to their blogs. There was supposed to be a 4th with them, but he backed out at the last minute.
